Had an argument with my mom today after she was talking to my nani about the Siya Goel case. She said, “ladke bichare darr rahe hai ab shaadi se.” I told her that yes, if Siya Goel murdered someone, then she was absolutely wrong and should face consequences. But why does one murder case suddenly become everyone’s focus while thousands of women have been facing rape, domestic violence, dowry harassment, marital abuse, and harassment for decades?
Instead of acknowledging that, she said, “jo girls aise kapde pehnti hai unke saath hi yeh sab hota hai.” That genuinely shocked me. Victim blaming is still so normalized that people don’t even realize how problematic it is.
Then we started talking about marriage and dowry. She literally said, “ladke wale toh paise maange ke hi,” and that the girl’s parents are the ones who have to spend everything while the groom’s side only has to organize one reception. She also said it’s always the girl’s family that has to approach for marriage proposals, and if a man is unmarried at 30, nobody cares because “ladke hai, kya farak padta hai.” But if a woman reaches 30 unmarried, society starts insulting and judging her.
Later, when I mentioned that I know some girls who had multiple partners before marriage, she replied, “ladko ke koi farak nahi padta, na woh pregnant hote hai, na periods aate hai, unki body par koi asar nhi padta hai. Agar ladki shaadi se pehle sex kare toh uski life barbaad ho jaati hai.”
The irony is that she’s actually acknowledging that women face harsher consequences and harsher judgment, yet somehow she still ends up defending the same mindset that creates those inequalities.
I completely agree that ketan Agarwal life has taken and this girl siya Goel should never be defended. But why is one murder case enough for people to say “ladke bichare darr rahe hai ab shaadi se,” while thousands of real cases of violence against women are ignored, justified, or blamed on the victims?
This is exactly why I believe patriarchy is still deeply rooted in our society. It’s become so internalized that even many women end up defending the very system that disadvantages them instead of questioning it.
Has anyone else had similar conversations with their parents?

Why I think young women should think twice before dating someone who is insecure about their success
I’m an 18-year-old woman, and this is something I’ve been thinking about a lot.
Before anyone misunderstands me: I’m NOT saying all men are like this. I’ve met genuinely kind, secure, and supportive men. They absolutely exist. But I’ve also noticed that many men with fragile egos seem to struggle when a woman is financially independent, ambitious, or successful.
For example, I drive regularly on main roads. The number of men who stare at me as if they’ve never seen a young woman driving is honestly surprising. Some even look visibly irritated or offended. Maybe I’m overthinking it sometimes, but it has made me wonder why a financially independent woman still seems to bother so many people.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned came from my 34-year-old neighbour, who is a software engineer at Google and is now divorced. She told me something I’ll never forget:
“Never choose potential over stability if the person is insecure. A secure man will celebrate your success. An insecure man will compete with you.”
That advice changed how I think about relationships.
I’ve personally seen women sacrifice their education, careers, and opportunities for boyfriends who promised they would “make it someday.” After marriage, reality hit. Financial stress, frustration, alcohol abuse in some cases, constant comparisons, and resentment toward their wives became everyday problems.
Of course, being broke doesn’t automatically make someone a bad person. Everyone goes through difficult phases. But if someone is both financially unstable and deeply insecure, that’s a combination I would never ignore.
If you’re an ambitious woman, ask yourself this:
If one day you earn twice as much as your partner, get promoted before him, buy your own car, or become more successful than he is, will he genuinely celebrate you—or will he feel threatened?
To me, that’s one of the biggest compatibility tests.
I would rather build a life with someone who is emotionally secure, financially responsible, and genuinely happy to see me grow than with someone who constantly turns my achievements into a competition.
Again, this is not about all men. There are plenty of secure, respectful men who are wonderful partners regardless of income. But I do think too many women ignore red flags because they’re in love and hope things will magically change after marriage.
Sometimes they don’t.
I’d rather be called “materialistic” for wanting stability than spend years trying to fix someone whose insecurity turns into control, resentment, or even abuse.
What do you all think? Have you seen this happen in real life, or do you think I’m looking at it the wrong way?
