The Quiet Earth (1985), gritty 80s kiwi sci-fi that swings for cosmic fences
Watching The Quiet Earth again for what seems like the 10th time. I rewatch it in every few years. A favorite movie for sure.
Bruno Lawrence plays Zac, a man who wakes to find he is the last man on Earth. One of the great unsung performances. What makes it so endlessly rewatchable is that brutal tonal whiplash. The first act is almost a dark comedy of liberation, but by the time Zac is screaming at the sky and trying to blow himself up, it hits you right in the existential gut.
