Moved to Illinois in 2023, just found this old post I made back then.
I absolutely love it up here and never plan to leave but this was my first impression.

I absolutely love it up here and never plan to leave but this was my first impression.
I guess the title says it all. If I had to pick a single scene to be the best moment of merlin, I think i would choose this. How about you?
So, our story begins in the year of our lord, nineteen hundred ninety eight, but i would have been a boy around the age of 10.
In eastern Kentucky, my cousins from ohio had come in to visit. Kyle was my best friend. My moms brothers son, made us cousins, but our love for making fun of how lame our parents were made us best friends.
I had never had a best friend before. This was my first experience. I remember very clearly we lied to each other about having girlfriends, he said he couldn't show me a picture of her because his parents didnt allow him too cause she was too pretty hahaha
Even at the time I knew that was a lie but I went along with it cause why not? He was my best friend.
So, here's where the story begins. Later on in the day we all decided to play a little game of baseball. We had this aluminum bat that we always used.
When it came my turn to bat I remember Kyle being behind me talking to my little brother. I got into the proper stance and I was ready to knock the hell out of this ball so I could impress Kyle.
Here comes the pitch, I hit it, and I got a good hold of it too. Probably one of the best hits id ever had, it went far far away. But while rounding the bases I noticed no one was going after the ball. No one seemed impressed with my hit. No one was even looking at me, they were all looking behind home base.
So I stopped running and look to see Kyle laying on the ground. Turns out, in my eagerness to please, I let go of the bat immediately after hitting the ball. The bat went flying and hit Kyle directly in the face.
Like, perfectly on the nose. As if I had had years of training to throw the bat exactly where it needed to go to cause the most amount of damage as possible. Everyone else playing the game immediately started telling me I had probably just killed Kyle.
And what a shitty thing to do, why did you throw the bat at Kyle? Why would you do that? No matter what Kyle did to me I shouldn't have thrown the bat at him.
Well, I started to cry, and I cried hard. I just couldn't stop crying. I went home and of course mom asked me why I was crying. I told her that I had just almost murdered my cousin/best friend. She tried to cheer me up but I told her I just wanted to go take a shower.

But all I really did was go into the bathroom, where I knew I could be alone and unbothered and I cried.
My mom then knocked on the door and told me Kyle wanted to talk to me. So I walked over to my grandmas house where Kyle, with his whole freaking face swollen up, attempted to smile and tell me it was okay, he wasnt mad at me.
After seeing his face I just started crying again. He made the joke that I cried a lot more than he did, and he was the one who actually got hurt.
I learned years later that I had actually broken his nose so well he needed facial reconstruction surgery.
He needed surgery on his face because of me.
Luckily my uncle is rich. Like, hundreds of thousands rich. Not a millionaire but could easily afford something like that. Actually now that I think about it he probably has great insurance, so it may not have been that expensive for them.
To this day Kyle is still cool with me and I had the pleasure of hanging with my uncle recently and he definitely wasnt mad or upset about any of it. But to this day I still feel bad.
I am so sorry Kyle.
