PSA: if your laptop GPU turned into "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter", Windows deleted the driver on purpose

Took me months to work this out. Dropping a few keywords first so this actually shows up on Google for the next person:

  • nvidia driver disappeared, GPU not showing in device manager laptop, showing as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter instead of RTX
  • "Application is not compatible with the installed NVIDIA drivers", code 10 this device cannot start
  • dGPU missing from task manager, only integrated graphics showing
  • nvidia driver uninstalled itself, had to reinstall nvidia driver again
  • GPU gone after eco mode, GPU gone after switching to standard mode
  • HDMI not working in standard mode
  • G-Helper, Armoury Crate, Optimus, MUX, hybrid graphics.

Mine's a ROG Zephyrus G14, RTX 5070 Ti Laptop.

But this'll hit any laptop where you switch the discrete GPU off and leave it off for a few weeks (eg: people that rarely play games and sit in eco mode for weeks).

TL;DR: Eco mode makes your dGPU absent. Windows deletes devices that have been absent past a timeout (15-30 days), then deletes their drivers as unused.

What happened

Eco mode power-gates the dGPU off the PCIe bus. Windows treats it like a USB stick you unplugged: not present.

There's a Windows maintenance job called pnpclean.dll that removes devices absent past a timeout, then removes any driver package nothing references any more. Default timeout is 30 days. Mine had a per-device value of 15.

Straight out of my C:\Windows\INF\setupapi.dev.log:

set: Device PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_2F58&SUBSYS_39A81043&REV_A1\... uses timeout period of 15 days.
set: Device PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_2F58&SUBSYS_39A81043&REV_A1\... will be removed.
set: Device PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_2F58&SUBSYS_39A81043&REV_A1\... was removed.
set: Searching for unused drivers that may be removed from the system.
set: INF oem130.inf (nvamsi.inf_amd64_...) will be removed.
set: INF oem130.inf was removed.

Same pass also cleared out some old USB sticks and Bluetooth pairings. Switching back to Standard afterwards shows the GPU as a new device with no driver (it just shows as "Basic Display Adapter" and with Code 10 error). NVIDIA Control Panel says "not compatible" because there's no driver installed.

How to tell if this is what happened to you

Open PowerShell and run this to search the logs:

Select-String -Path C:\Windows\INF\setupapi.dev*.log -Pattern "(VEN_10DE|VEN_1002).*(was removed|timeout period)"

VEN_10DE is NVIDIA, VEN_1002 is AMD. If you get lines saying your GPU "was removed", that's it. Note the * in setupapi.dev*.log. The live log rotates every few MB and mine only went back 5 days, but Windows keeps the old ones next to it as setupapi.dev.YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS.log going back about a year.

You can also see the driver package itself getting binned:

Select-String -Path C:\Windows\INF\setupapi.dev*.log -Pattern "unused drivers|INF oem\d+\.inf .*removed"

And check whether it's currently missing:

pnputil /enum-drivers | Select-String "nvamsi"

Nothing back means it's gone.

Fixes

Stop the cleanup running on its own. It runs as a Disk Cleanup handler, and each handler has an on/off switch:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Device Driver Packages
Autorun (DWORD) = 0

That handler's CLSID resolves to pnpclean.dll, so setting it to 0 stops the silent pass. Manual Disk Cleanup still works fine, since Autorun only controls the automatic run. Downside is that old driver packages and ghost devices stop getting cleaned up for you.

Or just keep the GPU visible now and then. Optimized mode in G-Helper turns the dGPU on whenever you plug in. Flipping to Standard every couple of weeks does the same thing. Resets the counter, no registry editing.

Luna feature request

Add Dolly zoom mode (where the tracked object is kept in the same proportion through zooming as we approach or move away from it)

And obviously please bring webcam support.

[Up to date] Which camera to choose between the Luna ultra and the Pocket 4P (Pro)?

If anything in the following list is missing feel free to comment, I'll update the list over the next weeks. Insta 360 if you are reading this, please close the gap through software updates, i'd rather keep my Luna.

Both have good tracking, 10 bit log recording with built in time code, same gimball technical limitations which for instance prevent vertical shooting in 4k (holding the camera horizontally allows this for both but doesn't feel natural) and full 360° view, etc.

Why the Luna Ultra / why not the pocket 4P :

  • Supports up to 8K30 with Dolby Vision. DJI caps at 4K.
  • Leica Summicron optics (a bit less lens flare than the DJI 4P) and Leica colour profiles allow for better out of the box flexibility.
  • Better weight balance, no rattle and comes with a nice protective case. The 4P comes without any gimball protection and it rattles a bit when being shaken.
  • Detachable 22" OLED screen that doubles as a wireless monitor/remote/mic, no phone needed. The 4p comes with a wireless remote (FrameTap) with a small display but slightly less convenient.
  • Has a built in tripod in the small handle and battery extensions, meaning less things to carry.
  • Insta 360 seem to listen to feedback a bit more than DJI and to have more active support - to be verified if the software updates that they promided to content creators (like webcam support) will come or not.
  • It is available in the US, unlike the pocket 4P.
  • Very good for photography from own experience.
  • Bundle comes with a better mic - the insta 360 mic pro has much better noise reduction, has USBC that can be used to charge it and also to plug a lavalier mic, and also has an eink display for personal branding. The 4P bundles come with a DJI mic mini or a mic 3 which are not as good.
  • Supports 360 photos (takes many pictures in all directions and stitches them together)

More flexibility for non raw/log shooters thanks to colour profiles, need for detachable screen with mic and doesnt like using phone app for remote controll, mic aesthetics and lavalier mic support matter, or you live in the US.

Why the Pocket 4P / why not the Luna ultra :

  • Supports up to 4k 240fps. Luna caps at 4k 120fps, with 240fps only in 1080p.
  • Has 17 stops of dynamic range with D-Log2 (vs 14 stops on the Luna). However this only is available on the main sensor.
  • Has more internal storage (103Gb vs only 47Gb on the Luna).
  • Supports much higher bitrate recording (up to 180Mb/s vs only 120Mb/s on the Luna) which would lead to a better quality image in 4k resolution especially at higher fps.
  • Battery: the Pocket 4 outlasts the Luna despite similar cell (1,550mAh). Real world usage says DJI manage battery usage much better than the Luna reaching up to 3,5h while Luna lasts closer to 2h. The 4P also charges faster at 65W (18min full charge claimed) compared to 30w for the Luna.
  • The joystick on the DJI is much better, it allows for better and more precise gimball controll (it basically senses the strength to which you pull it to one side), while on the Luna the joystick is just a 4 way button that just clicks into the different positions so it doesn't allow for smooth controll (same for the Luna zoom controll slider, it is very bad quality and it just activated when up/down, it has no sensitivity metering)
  • Less overheating / better heat management on the osmo pockets. Users encountered screen freeze issues on the Luna ultra probably because of overheating issues.
  • Hasselblad color science which is closer to a more cinematic style. This is subjective.
  • Has a preview lut for log recording and histogram unlike the Luna.
  • Webcam mode for live streaming: works as a plug-and-play UVC webcam (officially supported by DJI, ActiveTrack included). The Luna Ultra's specs mention nothing about webcam use, some youtubers have said that the feature will come, but nothing is sure as of now and we dont know when that will happen if it does, nor if the camera will have overheating issues in webcam mode - which together with product cannibalisation could be reasons why insta360 never bring it to the Luna.
  • The DJI app takes much less space (2gb Vs 5gb for the insta360 app) and is not required to activate the camera. And at least you can open the DJI app when your phone has little space left, the insta 360 app doesn't let you open it if you have less than 1gb of space available.
  • The dji mic ecosystem - if you own many microphones could be a more coherent choice to stay DJI.
  • It's not a first generation and comes with less bugs / missing features, it feels less like beta testing.
  • It is slightly cheaper (cheaper doesn't mean worse, they might just have better economies of scale)

For slow mo, live streaming/webcam use, better dynamic range at 1x for log shooters and higher bitrate (overall better video files for more advanced shooting workflows), if you don't care about the detachable screen and you find the remote or using the phone app better for your use case, if you tend to always have your phone maxed out on storage.

Some features where the DJI wins could "technically" be brought to the Luna like solving overheating issues, increasing battery life, bringing webcam support, log preview, fixing their app, etc. But you should not buy a camera based on what it "could/should have" you must buy it based on what it currently does because there is no guarantee that insta360 will even be able to fix the overheating issues or that they would be willing to bring webcam support.

Content creators that promise feature updates (usually they say something like "I don't see why they wouldn't fix/add this") know what they are doing, keep in mind that they earn money if you order with their links - don't buy based on what they say.

The Insta360 Luna Ultra or the DJI Pocket 4P ? what do y'all think

TL;DR: the Luna Ultra is the pick if you just want footage that looks good with minimal grading and you're not tied to the DJI ecosystem. But with the 4P which seems to be much more feature packed and capable, only few days away, buying either camera right now means choosing with half a spec sheet. What follows is a list of arguments toward each camera.

The Luna Ultra just launched and the Pocket 4P should drop around June 22 based on the FCC confidentiality window. Since a lot of people are deciding right now, here's my comparison of what we know.

Luna Ultra features and pros:

  • Dual lens: 1" main sensor + telephoto with 3x optical zoom.
  • 8K30 with Dolby Vision. DJI caps at 4K, and no 6K has been confirmed for the 4P.
  • Leica Summicron optics (a bit less lens flare than the DJI 4P in this comparaison vidéo) and Leica color profiles (Natural, Vivid, Chrome).
  • Detachable 2" OLED screen that doubles as a wireless monitor/remote/mic, no phone needed.
  • Pro workflow: 10-bit I-Log, ACES, built-in timecode (DJI has timecode too).
  • Insta 360 seems to listen to feedback and has already promised many upcoming updates including webcam support and noise reduction controll - gotta see if they do hold their promisses to content creators.
  • If buying the creator combo, the mic pro of the luna has a screen where you can put your logo if you care, it also is more convenient to charge and can use a laveller mic through USB-C, the mic 3 shipped with the dji doesnt have these features.

Why I'd still wait for the 4P:

  • DJI has confirmed 17 stops of dynamic range with D-Log2 (vs 14 stops on the Luna).
  • Leaks point to a variable aperture f/1.7-f/2.8 on the main lens vs the Luna's fixed f/1.8. [Confirmed it is not the case]
  • 4K up to 240fps is expected. The Luna does 4K120 max, with 240fps only in 1080p.
  • Battery: the Pocket 4 outlasts the Luna (1,550mAh, ~4h claimed), and the 4P is rumored to get a bigger cell on top.
  • Hasselblad color tuning keeps showing up in leaks. DJI owns Hasselblad and already ships it on Mavic drones, so it's credible.
  • Webcam mode for streaming: the Pocket 4 works as a plug-and-play UVC webcam (officially supported by DJI, ActiveTrack included), and the 4P will almost certainly keep that. The Luna Ultra's specs mention nothing about webcam use, which is a bad point for streamers, some youtubers have said that the feature will come, but ig nothing is sure as of now and we dont know when that will happen if it does, nor if the camera will have overheating issues in webcam mode - which is not the case with the pocket4.
  • The detachable screen is cool but not a moat: DJI already does phone monitoring via the Mimo app, and a wireless remote called "FrameTap" appeared in FCC filings and showed in some unboxing of what seems to be the 4P creator combo.
  • DJI Mic ecosystem, and this is their 4th iteration of the format vs a gen-1 product. Fewer firmware surprises, more mature accessories.
  • Leaks suggest the 4P will be cheaper than the Luna...

The thing is that most reviews compare the Luna to the Pocket 4 atm: it has less low-light noise and nicer colors out of the box.

But this comparison doesnt seem fair as reviewers seem to pretend like the main sensor on the 4 will have the exam same capabilities as the 4P but it clearly wont be the case (17 stops, variable aperture, etc...).

And why not trust the current reviewers that got the Luna ultra for free together with a trip to the creator launch events, even tough they say that they are not biased and can say anything? Well the question answers by itself, but also keep in mind that if they do say bad stuff, insta 360 likely wont keep offering them cameras and trips to attend their events and network with other content creators...

On the other side, some youtubers got offered by DJI to get the pocket 4P early for reviews, the leaked email stated that they "simply require a 3-month (until Aug 20th) no-direct-competitor-comparison clause". Is that because the 4P's software at release isnt ready and they expect to catch up with the Luna ultra by August or is it because they know that the 4P doesnt perform as well as the Luna ultra and that any comparaisons may hurt the part of the market they can capture in the high demand launch period?

The flip side: the 4P's price could change, availability in some regions is poor, it seems slighly bulkier than the luna, and more importantly they hevent been listening to reviews and customers for the past 2 years since their strategy changed - unlike insta360.

[BELGIUM] If you live in belgium you can get the insta 360 Luna Ultra at 10% off (656€ or 836€ for the creator combo) at Fnac Belgium during "journées adhérents" - which just requires a 10€ membership.
