I (31F) am a Black woman. I work from home in IT support. I make decent money and I take care of my things. I bought my car two years ago with my own money after saving for three years. It is not fancy but it is reliable and I keep it clean.
My cousin Tasha (33F) has always been messy with money. She has had three cars in five years and crashed every single one. The last one she totaled three weeks ago because she was texting while driving. She has no car now. She lives with her boyfriend and works as a waitress about 25 minutes away.
Last week she called me and asked to borrow my car until she gets a new one. She said she would just use it for work and she would be careful. I told her no. I reminded her that she crashed three cars. I told her my insurance would go up if something happened. I told her I need my car for errands and emergencies even though I work from home.
She got mad. She said I was being selfish and that I am not a real family member. She said I do not even drive that much so what is the big deal. She said I have a good job and can afford to help her out.
I told her she should take the bus or ask her boyfriend to drive her. She said the bus takes two hours and her boyfriend works. She called me privileged because I get to work from home.
Then my aunt called me. She said Tasha is going through a hard time and I should let her use the car just for a month. She said family is supposed to lift each other up. She said if something happened, they would pay for the damage. I told her I do not trust that because they have no money and Tasha has never paid anyone back in her life.
My mom says I should let her use the car for two weeks just to keep peace in the family. She said if I say no, I will be the one everyone blames. My dad says I am right and she made her own mess.
I feel bad because she is struggling. But I also feel like I worked too hard for my things to let someone with a history of crashes drive my car. I know if she crashes it, I will never see a dime from her and I will be stuck with no transportation.
AITAH for refusing to lend my car to my cousin who crashed every car she has owned?
