Philosophy Discussion Group

Hi fellow ponderers! Normally I'd be making this post to announce the time and location for this Saturday's session, but I am traveling this weekend and won't be able to organize and host this one. 😭

I can reschedule it for next Saturday (5/30) or someone else from the group can host this Saturday if you guys would prefer to keep the existing schedule. I'm open to either option, but wanted to get the group's input.

What are your thoughts?

What's the deal with men over 40 living with their mothers/ families? Is this a local issue or is it everywhere?

44F in Oklahoma, for context.

I've noticed a pretty high rate of men on The Apps who have careers and are pursuing serious long-term relationships but live in their mother's home. In their 40s. It's an admittedly small sample size but it's 3 out of the 5 I chose to match with. Is that... normal now? Is it only this common in Oklahoma? Why is it this common? Or has it always been common and I just never knew it? When I express surprise or disappointment with that, they get pretty offended but it just seems kinda wild to me.

I completely understand the economy is hot garbage right now, but like... it's hot garbage for me too, so...? What gives?

ETA: Bringing family into their home to care for them in old age is a totally different situation than what I'm referring to. Each of the three I've met have elected to move to their parents' homes either post-divorce (so too close to a divorce for me to want to date them anyway) or "because it's cheaper" (implies a desire to minimize effort at someone else's literal expense over valuing independence and stability, which I don't align with). I don't feel like financial and physical independence is an extreme standard to have, given that it is also a standard I meet for myself.

Hello ponderers of Norman! 😊 We'll be meeting for the next philosophy discussion group this Saturday (5/9) at 10:00 am at the Norman East Library.

Last time, we started exploring the Stoic perspective on living intentionally, and there was such good conversation out of that topic that we'll be continuing with Stoicism in this session as well! Looking forward to sharing thoughts with you!
