What to expect for M1

Hi all,

I’m starting up soon and would appreciate hearing from people that have been through it what the first year is like. I was an ANKI animal back in the day but haven’t taken a formal course in a few years due to research.

I’ve heard mixed takes from friends of friends ranging from “I study 5 hours a day” to “pretty much every waking moment is spent studying”. I’ll have aP/F curriculum, but my internal drive to meaningfully learn the material is there so it’s not P/F in my head. Is this going to be the 12 hour days I hear about through the telephone?

Oil type 2007 6cylinder 4WD

I see mixed messages online regarding which oil to use. She is 287k miles (purchased recently), and I plan to do regular oil changes every 4k miles. I have leftover OEM 5W-30 from toyota parts, but am wondering if I should be using an aftermarket full synthetic/high mileage.

Thanks everyone

Permanent E01 Error on Accessory Display after Evaporator Core / Dash Rebuild (2007 4Runner) – Need wiring guidance!

Hey everyone,

Looking for some insight from anyone who has deeply explored the dashboard wiring architecture on a 4th-Gen (2007) 4Runner. 1GRFE 6 cylinder

Backstory: My truck recently had the entire dashboard completely pulled out by a shop to replace the HVAC evaporator core.

  • Immediately after the initial rebuild, the center accessory display (the screen above the climate controls that shows the clock, ambient temperature, average MPG, and range) started throwing an E01 code on startup.
  • At first, it was intermittent: it would say E01 when I cranked the engine, but after driving a mile or two, it would successfully fetch the data and start displaying my actual Range and MPG stats.
  • the center accessory display is now locked onto a permanent E01 code and never updates or shows stats anymore. (Clock and ambient temp still work fine). When I turn the car on i see a flash showing accurate range stats and then it jumps to E01
  • I am running Diode Dynamics fog lights (came with the car when I bought it) and the mechanic pulled the dash and said he didn't know why that yellow/green wire was tapped.

What I've Checked:

  • I confirmed the physical plugs directly on the back of the center accessory display are seated completely, and there are no visibly broken wires or empty pin slots right at that specific screen connector.

My Questions:

  1. For those familiar with the 4th-gen CAN-bus / serial data routing: Does the accessory display get its fuel calculation/mileage data directly from the ECM, or does it pass through the Instrument Cluster (Combination Meter) gateway first?
  2. Which specific pin or factory wire color on the instrument cluster harness carries this serial data packet over to the center multi-function display? (I've read whispers about a Yellow/Green wire, but want to verify).
  3. Is there a specific junction connector or ground point tucked behind the instrument cluster that could cause the cluster to function perfectly while completely severing the outbound Tx/Rx data line to the center console?

Any wiring diagrams, pin-out schematics, or target areas to wiggle would be massive. Going to try to do this myself if its not too bad.

Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone,
I’m looking at a 2007 1GRFE that is currently sitting at 284,000 miles. I know that number is enough to scare most people off, but the maintenance history on this thing is the most thorough I’ve ever seen.
The seller is asking $8,000.
The Big Win:
The frame is 100% rust-free. This has been confirmed via an official inspection report and detailed photos. Since it spent time in the Mid-Atlantic (VA/MD), finding a clean frame is a miracle.

Recent Service/Mods (Past 2 years):
The owner basically overhauled the entire mechanical and suspension system:
Suspension: New Upper and Lower Control Arms, Front Sway Bar links/bushings.
Shocks: Bilstein 5100s all around.
Drivetrain: New CV axles and axle seals; Driveshaft serviced 09/2025.
Engine/Cooling: New Water Pump, Alternator, Spark Plugs, and PCV Valve.
Brakes: New calipers, rotors, and pads all around.
Fluids: Full flush/change for the Transfer Case, Transmission, and Differentials at 275k miles.
Recent: Oil change and tire rotation done this month (April 2026).

It’s a 284k-mile engine and transmission. Even with all these new parts bolted onto it, I’m wondering how much "internal" life is realistically left in the 1GR-FE V6 at this stage.
My Questions:

  1. Would you trust this for a cross-country move, or is it just too much of a gamble?
  2. Appreciate any insight!

Are there any avenues out there to get assistance with moving costs when relocating to a program that is far away? Anyone have experiences getting financial assistance from a school or other body with this?

I just had an interesting discussion with a fellow applicant. I’ll leave any identifying details out, but essentially they said they submitted a LOI but were still deciding on whether they would go there if they got off the WL??? My understanding was that this is essentially binding (not legally but would permanently damage your career).

Can anyone weigh in here?

I found this annoying to hear as I have my own LOI that was sent in with a different understanding.
