Cost to produce high end tents?

Hello y’all,

Me and my dad are having a conversation about business and my future. I love backpacking and he was telling me the profit margins on ultralight gear is probably phenomenal.

Just as an example, how much do you guys think it cost to produce durston tents? I know those fabric cost so much and durston tries to sell their products as cheap as possible so I wouldn’t imagine they make a ton off of their products.

So any clue how much materials cost to make an ultralight tent?

Trail Pudding

Food people, have you guys ever made pudding on the trail? I mean you can get it in powder form, as well as milk. The only limiting factor should be getting cold enough water.

Has anyone tried this and did it work well?

Mount Marcy Via South Trail Difficulty

How difficult is Mount Marcy via the south trail? I want to bring my dad and brother on a trip but I don’t want to kill my dad. We are gonna hike into Colden lake to camp and then I’d like for us to go to lake tear of the clouds and then Marcy. It may be a better idea to do skylight but I’d like for them to do Marcy.

Avalanche Lake

Hello everyone.

I’m going on a backpacking trip, 2 actually, and both trips have a night spent at lake Colden. Is avalanche lake accessible from lake Colden? Not to walk through but just to see it.

Tripod Recommendations?

I’m not a big photographer but I love to take photos of the stars on my phone with 30 second exposure. It’s getting really annoying trying to prop up my phone. Any recommendations for ultralight tripods

Son-Bird Campsite Water Source

Im planning to camp at Sno Bird with my two friends. Are there any close by water sources? Closest one I see on all trails is a creek down the hill a bit but I’m not sure if we could trust that.

Career planning with 5 months off

Hey everyone,

I’m a mechanical engineering student going into my sophomore year, and I’m starting to think of long-term career plans after graduation.

One of my biggest goals is to thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail, 2,650 miles along the west coast over about 5 months. Unfortunately my graduation date is about 1-2 weeks too late to start the thru hike, so my current plan is to continue to work for about a year after graduation.

Ideally, I would continue to work with the company I intern with, gain some experience, then resign to take a leave of absence before starting the 5 month trek. After completing the PCT I would come back and apply for new jobs.

For engineerings involved in hiring, how would you view someone with:
• A B.S. in Mechanical Engineering
• About 1 year of experience
• A 5 month gap to complete the PCT

Would this be viewed in any negative way, or could it be positive? Has anyone done something similar?

I’d appreciate any advice and perspective.

Thank you.

Start date

Hello,

I really want to do the PCT when I graduate college in a few years. I have graduation May 26th meaning I would have to start around May 29-31.

Is that considered too late for a northbound start? If not, what kind of pace can o expect to comfortably finish before snow starts in the north?

Unfortunately I can’t do any other start time since I’ll have school.

Anyone who’s started late may, how did it work out for you?

Thanks

Bear Spray

I’m doing two over night trips this summer in the high peaks. I have bear spray already, but do I need to bring it?

I probably will because why not but I’ve also been seeing stuff saying how I shouldn’t worry since black bears don’t care to attack.

Kakwa Water Bottle Holder

Kakwa Water Bottle Holder

The current shoulder strap pockets annoy me so I want to remove one and put a water bottle holder on it but I can’t seem to remove the adjust strap for the shoulder strap. Has anyone been able to remove it?

Trail Runners or Boots?

Would you guys recommend trail runners or boots for summer backpacking? I’m thinking of getting Alta lone peaks but I also have Merrill Moab’s and don’t know which is better for up there. I’m guessing trail runners are?

Thanks

Smart Water Bottles

I'm looking at getting an UL pack and the Kakwa 40 seems great except for one thing.

Can you fit a 1L smart water bottle in the shoulder strap pockets, or remove the pocket entirely?

Shakedown

Hello everyone,

From an earlier post asking about packs, I was recommended to post a shakedown of my gear. Linked is a picture of all of my gear for a typical 3 season trip, maybe less in the summer. My base weight comes out to about 13lbs 10.9oz (not including pack since I want to change it).

https://postimg.cc/RNzs78Ky

I plan to change my pot to a Toaks 750 which will save me 5oz and get Altra lone peaks which may allow me to not "need" to bring camp shoes (saves 11.1oz). This will cut me down to 12lbs 3.7oz.

Some things I know I could replace are my sleeping bag, rain jacket, and poles but those are too expensive for me right now as all my main want is a new pack since mine has TOO much empty space.

Is there anything else I can change? As well, is 12lbs 3.7oz too much for a new UL pack?

Below is the weight of all of my gear.

Thanks!

Hyperlite Junction 40 vs 55

I can’t decide which one to get, the 40L or 55L. My kit is mostly dialed besides my sleeping bag which can be bulky. I have the mountain smith anterior 35, packs kinda big. I have the sea to summit alto tr2 and my sleeping pad is the Nemo switchback which I would just strap on top of the pack.

I currently have the osprey aether 70 which really annoys me with how big it is and all the extra space.

Is there any easy way to check if all my gear would fit in the 40L.

I know the 55L is only an ounce extra but I just don’t to feel as bulky if I don’t need to.

Thanks.

Question For People Who Have Done the Timberline Trail

Hello. So me and my buddy want to do the timberline trial this summer and we will be flying into PDX. From there we will take public transportation to timberline lodge.

Is there any bag storage there? We won’t have a hotel or car to store our extra clothes and toiletries bag and we don’t want to care the extra weight. Do you guys know of any showers there or on the way back to Portland? As you can tell, I don’t know much about the lodge.

Thank yall
