Going without the map is more fun

I've decided to stop using the online map and honestly, probably (having) the in-game map (revealed), too. I've found that it makes my runs way too... stale/predictable? It turns every run into just getting a car and then going straight to one of the best base locations in town and setting up there. It also makes the world way smaller because you just look up the exact thing you're looking for and then plot a course straight to it.

I think starting my runs with the random spawns and then just figuring everything out without any extra map knowledge will give my runs a much more adventurous/exploratory feel. Making filling in the in-game map a real accomplishment has to feel good.

Has anyone else made this choice or found themselves in a similar spot?

Has anyone tired super-low pop, 100% sprinters?

I'm just curious. The game gets pretty boring for me as soon as I get a solid base, and I'm wondering if keeping the zombies super-dangerous (though lower pop to compensate) would keep the game interesting/challenging for longer?

The game is just as great as I remember

I haven't played it since the mid-2000s but I just started playing again.

Playing Oblivion and Skyrim upon their releases left me with the feeling that Morrowind was just better. My main gripe against the newer titles is that the level scaling making it so that almost the entire game is accessible to you from level 1, whereas Morrowind is more than happy to tell you to kick rocks and come back once you're stronger. Also the level scaling in the newer titles made it so that if you leveled up from doing non-combat skills (let's say I did a lot of alchemy) then I would be facing harder enemies without actually being stronger myself, so the new titles actually punish you for not focusing on combat.

I'm having a blast. I'm exploiting alchemy and some spells as much as possible. 100% Chameleon for 3 seconds makes it possible to steal most things. Fortify Intelligence and Luck for 3 seconds for making stronger potions. Fortify Personality and Luck for 3 seconds to get the best prices from merchants, or to be able to successfully taunt someone into attacking me. I have potions keeping me alive when I shouldn't be, and have traded for many useful scrolls to keep me dealing magic damage even when my mana is all gone. I have been ignoring a lot of the story to just go do whatever (try to get rich and powerful and exploit all the games systems). I am only like level 5 or 6 but I look forward to getting to do some enchanting when possible, too.

Have any of you based at this fire station in Louisville?

I'm in the process of packing and transferring all my stuff over to it currently. I'm surprised I've never seen it mentioned on any videos I've seen on potential bases. It will take a bit of fencing off the front for security but it is an awesome space with a huge garage and parking lot.

Tip: You can make notes on the map while the game is paused

I just realized this and figured it might be news to others as well. If you open up the map you can then press F2 to pause the game. It will still let you mark on the map while the game is paused. It takes the danger out of opening up the map while out-and-about.

Do you guys set up bases in other towns?

I'm at the point where I have my base, tons of food in the freezer, a bunch of vehicles, and every tool and material I could need. I'm getting bored of going out just to loot new floor tiles to decorate my base with. I've looted everything in Riverside and everything else is quite the drive.

I think I want to set up a new base in another town. Do you guys do this? My main concern is that I don't come back in time to refuel the generator and all my food spoils. I'm making a list of stuff I would want to take with me to set up another outpost right now, but I'm also looking for any tips or advice from someone who has done this before.

I am suing the Riverside Boat Club

Someone forgot to build railing on the second floor. I literally just walked off and fell to the first floor. By the grace of God nothing is fractured, lol.

Riverside Factory Warehouse

I have 100 hours in the game (it took me 60 to even start really enjoying the game, including many times I quit the game for months) and this is my first base I'm really proud of, so I just wanted to show it off. I'm like 7 weeks into this playthrough and am currently healing a fractured foot from falling off the roof. It's in the factory warehouse right outside of Riverside. The only downside is that it's a little bit of a drive to anywhere, but there are a ton of upsides to it.

  • There is a gas station across the street from it.
  • It comes with all the building materials, space, and storage you'll need. I was lucky enough to find both the sledgehammer and antique oven in the factory.
  • There are a ton of company vehicles in the parking lot.
  • It's easy to get around it with well-placed rope ladders.
  • There is a ton of roof space for a garden that I still need to start.
  • Once you clear out the zombies around it, it's a really quiet base
  • I'm currently working on clearing a path from it to the nearest lake at the country club to the south-easy. I want to be able to fish from it and think it would also be a good location for traps.

Don't put a frying pan in the microwave

RIP my entire base and playthrough after like 2 in-game weeks of setting up my first real base.
