Getting an ESA Letter in California in 2026? Need Advice
I'm looking into getting an ESA (Emotional Support Animal) letter in California in 2026 and wanted to get some advice from people who have gone through the process recently.
From what I've researched, California requires a licensed mental health professional to have an established provider-client relationship with you for at least 30 days before issuing an ESA letter for housing. Is that still how it's being handled in 2026?
A little background: I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 12 and have also dealt with social anxiety and periods of depression over the years. I got my dog about two years ago during a difficult period in my life, and they've been a major source of emotional support ever since.
I'm trying to make sure I do everything the right way and comply with California's requirements. I've been researching different providers and came across RealESALetter, which appears to have positive reviews and an A+ BBB rating, but I'm interested in hearing real experiences from people who have recently gone through the process.
A few questions:
- Is the 30-day provider relationship requirement still mandatory in California?
- How long did it take you to receive your ESA letter?
- Did your landlord accept it without any problems?
- Were you asked for any additional documentation?
- Has anyone here used RealESALetter or another provider they would recommend?
I'm not looking to abuse the system; I'm simply trying to obtain a legitimate ESA letter through the proper process. Any advice, experiences, or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
