Aliexpress €3 (soon €5 fee) - Doomsday has come for EU

(See full list of the corporations involved with the lobby that pushed this through here.)

In case EU residents aren't/weren't aware, EU parliament voted to add a €3 fee per item category (not per package) and will increase to €5 later on. Well I thought that was VERY annoying considering this was lobbied for by major corporations who just manufactur all their products in China/SE Asia etc and then charge 500%-1000% of what I can buy the same item for directly on aliexpress. Again, see full list of the corporations involved with the lobby that pushed this through here.

Anyway, starting recently the prices on Aliexpress for ALL items went up. Instead of +€3 per category, it's +€3 per item if not WAY more.

So now if I need to buy a pack of replacement bolts for example, what would cost 1 euro before will now cost €1 + €3 = €4 total.

Now to make things worse, if it's a special type of bolt where I can only order 1 at a time, now I have to pay at least +€3 per bolt as the website didn't calculate automatically +€3 per category at checkout. So say I need multiple bolts or I need to test different sizes now it's €1 + €3 + €1 + €3 + €1 + €3.

So €12 instead of €3. See how this is already very annoying very quickly for buying small replacement parts?

Aliexpress made bike/BrompNOT maintenence and upgrades very affordable and accessible. We can't find many of these parts sold locally, certainly not made in EU. This was a common response by certain people, but again this fee has nothing to do with protecting local manufacturing, this fee was pushed on us by middle men corporations selling aliexpress junk in Lidl for €20 when it costs €3 to buy it direct from China. So we're forced to pay jacked up prices now. Yippee.

Evercross now for sale by Decathlon in EU (but still cheaper on Aliexpress)

I know many people feel hesitant to buy from Aliexpress, especially when shipped from China. Well if you really can't emotionally handle buying a BrompNot from there, the current EU shipped BrompNot (from Poland) is now in stock on Decathlon's website for 599 Euros.

But you will save yourself 100+ Euros if you buy from Aliexpress (current link for 487 Euros but price fluctuates daily) and it still ships from Poland by same company. Maybe, MAYBE you get better protection from Decathlon's website, I have no idea. Also if you buy it at a strategic time you can get big coupons from Aliexpress to drop that price to as low as 360 Euros

Thanks to this post for bringing this to our attention: https://www.reddit.com/r/BrompNOTs/comments/1u0hhab/evercross_em6_new_bike_very_satisfied_eu/

Note: I should have written title as "on Decathlon website" as it is not Decathlon selling it directly.

BrompNot Shipping from Poland

Called an Evercross but it's clearly a white label Cranston. Apparently an early bird deal so price could go up after this first batch are sold off but this is a great sign that these bikes are now being brought into EU warehouses.

Clone Bike Friday: All-Panda

Well I'll be damned. I love my BrompNOT but I can't deny I have craved a tougher off roader. I can't believe what the AliEx algorithm just showed me exists.

Questionnaire Coming Soon - Please contribute questions / data points to Questionnaire

Fellow BrompNot/TriFold owners!

I will soon ask volunteers in the community who are owners of these bikes to fill out a questionaire about purchasing a BrompNot or Trifold and their experience in order to help all people who wish to purchase one as well.

What questions should I ask / data should I gather to help all of us? Please contribute below.

So far I have thought to ask these questions:

If you bought a BrompNot or Trifold -

  • Bike model name, wheel size, gearing # (external or IGH) frame material
  • Where did you buy it from? —> Business - Link or Physical Location
  • Purchase Cost TOTAL - Please if possible break down all costs: Retail Price, Additional Sales Tax, Delivery Cost, Additional Fees at time of purchase
  • Additional fees once imported into country? Complications? --> Which country?
  • Time to Deliver to your address?
    1. Packaging Quality?
    2. You live in Major City, town, or very rural?
    3. What country was bike delivered to?
  • If you communicated with seller, good service? Modifications requested?
  • Tracking Number? Delivery Updates were provided?
  • Weight of bike upon delivery (before any modifications)
  • Folded measurements upon delivery (without pedals, saddle) .....

What other questions should I ask / data should I gather to help all of us? Please contribute below.

69T Chainring does work on BrompNOT (barely)

Behold! 69T on my Cranston. (10 Spd 11-42/Zee Deraileur)

Does it fold? Yes! (Barely) See photos. I can use the hook too!

But be aware! My bike came with this little metal sleeve on the chainstay and yours might too. The chainring does SLIGHTLY push into it. The sleeve is aluminum from what I can tell so the chainring doesn't get damaged, it just dents the sleeve. Sleeve can be removed, I won't do that though.

I didn't put a new chain on, I just took off my 53T and used same chain. It still works up to gear 7 (28T) of 10. I may test with a longer chain but my first test will be trying to see if my 38T chainring can fit on the back side of this Vinyl record, I mean chainring, and still use gears 8-10.

Why would I do this? To go faster, duh. My city is mostly flat, and the hills it does have are STEEP, hence why I'd prefer to run a 38T next to the 69T if possible.

I'm no pro cyclist in terms of form nor cadence. I struggle to maintain 25+ km/h on 53T.

I just test road the 69T. Wow 25 km/h is EASY now. I'm going to be passing tons of electric scooters now who are used to passing me.

Because it's rainy/slick tonight I didn't feel comfortable pushing the RPM to the max but I got to 36 km/h on nearby short stretch of road. With a 53T I would already spin out / be beyond my RPM comfort zone when reaching 36 kmh. So according to the math I'll hit 45 km/h at the same cadence.

2 sellers I found. One is more budget friendly and heavier which is the one I bought. Chainring 1

And the other is more expensive but lighter (and has options up to 120T lol. They also sell 68T and 70T with smaller diameter than option 1. Chainring 2

One could use bigger rings but 285mm is the max if you want to fold the bike completely.

Update: 38T works on the back side of the ring for gear 6 to 10 (24-42T cogs)

Funxtron

Not the first trifold I've seen with a gap in the frame for the wheel. Looks cool

Update: Managed to take out the J Hook Spoke. Seems to be 13 Gauge, 138mm. Very annoying as 14G is way cheaper and more common.

Wheel is from a Cranston. I road it very hard on a very blocky cobblestone road.

It looks like a trifold tricycle lol. Anyone else put an over 60T chainring on their BrompNot? I was about to order a 60T but then saw I should be able to squeeze the 69T onto my BrompNot as it should still be able fold and not touch the rear triangle for mine hehe.

I think I won't be the only person in town with a BrompNot for much longer. I only see prices continue to drop. Eventually local bike shops will start stocking up on these.
