Comparing Aceoffix C5 to Brompton G line Headtube

I wanted to look more closely at the headtube of my Aceoffix C5 after seeing several cases of G line head tube failures; everything from headtube splitting apart to rivnuts splitting the steel. It would be concerning if Aceoffix did not make the headtube thick enough since it's an aluminium frame vs the Brompton's steel.

Luckily they made it about 3.5mm thick, which based on my calculations, should be stronger than the G line headtube. I also looked into the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and fatigue life of 6069 aluminium and how those values are calculated and how we should interpret it in the context of a bike frame.

My conclusion is that the fear of fatigue life on aluminium bikes is very overblown.

Anyone tried Aniwow folding bike?

Hi everyone! I just got into cycling and commuting by share-bike. I’m thinking about whether it’s time to get my own bike — one I can use every day for commuting, and later I’d love to try bike touring too.

My apartment is small, so I need a really small folding bike. Brompton is a bit too expensive for me.

At first I was looking at the Takachia A16. But then I found Aniwow. Not many people talk about it, even less than Takachia.

Has anyone here ridden one? Does it seem good enough for commuting and maybe touring? Thanks! 🙏

Buying a Litepro bike from the official Website

Hello, I am interested in buying a Litepro bike from their site, given they state the standard shipping method includes with DDP. However, on their site there is also a notice which says that European customers need to choose the express shipping method to avoid the customs taxes. But when i get to the delivery method at checkout, they only have the standard shipping listed. Has anyone tried to order from their site to Europe? Is their website a trusted place to order from? For the record, I don't want to order from Alibaba because the shipping fee to my country is the the same if not more than the price of the bike.

Takachia C16/C20 owners: How reliable are the frame hinges and steering post hinges, and are they serviceable?

Hello everyone!

I’m looking into getting a Takachia Tiime Series trifold bike (specifically eyeing the C16 model). Overall, the specs look solid, but looking closely at the main frame hinge and the handle bar support, the hinge pins appear to be completely closed or sealed rather than having a traditional removable bolt, screw, or pin set.

For long-term owners of the C16 or C20:

  1. How has the hinge reliability been? Have you noticed any play, flexing, or creaking developing over time in the steering post or main frame after heavy use?
  2. Are they actually replaceable? If a hinge pin ever wears out or gets loose, how do you service it if it's a sealed design? Do you have to send it back to a dealer, or is there a way to press them out and replace them?

I love the portability of these trifolds, but I want to make sure the handle bar support and frame won't develop unfixable slop down the road.

Appreciate any insight or experiences from current owners or mechanics who have worked on them!

Thanks!

New rack day... neo 3 carbon 20 inch 406

I always thought racks looked as ugly as anything can get on a bike. Love this one though. Just need my easy wheels to ship and a bag would be nice. No idea who good it works as an actual practical rack yet.

This finally fits with 42mm tyres, will not fit with 50mm or above. The little wheels weigh as much a pluto so I will swap them out. I did weight the rack... but forgot to write it down and now I cannot remember ;p

Aluminum BrompNOTs general lifespan

I see a lot of new bike photos w all sorts of neat mods and weights, but I'm wondering how aluminum tri-fold frames hold up over 5-10 years.

I am skeptical of the idea that Brompton engineering is superior, but I do take to heart they've only done steel and titanium frames. I have a steel C-line, which I like, but is super heavy. I'm also around 190-200 lbs. I am very comfortable w the flex in a steel frame, I've had lots of steel bikes over the years, and I'm comfortable w my noob understanding of a) steel fatigue and b) that steel non-folders are basically bombproof.

I understand that aluminum has a fatigue limit, and you can get 2-3 nots for the price a Brompton, but I also don't know _if_ ppl are actually finding these frames fail, or whether that's wonk nonsense based on theory but not practice.

Thanks!

NBD: Java Neo - Thanks for all your advice!

I posted a while back asking for some advice on what type of bike to buy and some potential locations to buy one ( https://www.reddit.com/r/BrompNOTs/comments/1tptuae/chinese_clone_advice_for_hk_person/ )

Eventually I ended up picking up this Java Neo in 20" from Jollymap in Hong Kong.

The photos online of size comparisons between 16" and 20" make it look far more extreme than it is, and particularly with the sizes of the Java Neo's there was no way the 16" was going to work for me (I'm 182cm.. on a good day)

I've only given it a quick test, up and down some decently steep hills in my area. While I grew up on bikes, they were mountain bikes and BMX bikes when I was younger, and when I was a bit older it was all road and track bikes (though also had a 'hybrid' for commuting).

This... doesn't really feel like any of them, which is neither good nor bad - it's certainly not as twitchy as I feared but the ride position isn't quite one I'm used to - although not uncomfortable.

Hydraulic brakes are completely new to me, and while they have a ton of stopping power, they don't behave anything like the cantilevered brakes I'm used to - thankfully most places I'll use this won't be anything like as steep as what I just rode on to test it.

The gear shifter... is a bit uncomfortable, I might be able to adjust it's position and have it dig into my hand less, but I'm not sure if that'll be enough.

Saddle, fine.... really nothing to be said in either direction about it, unlikely to change it any time soon though.

The handle bar grips are... awful, I'm very swiftly going to change these out, I hate these foam grips!

When I bought it they chucked an extended wheel thing on - I think this is a must for pushing the bike around when it's folded and really glad the shop gave me that. I think I may also add a rack at some point, just to make it a bit easier to roll around.

The handlebars in the 20" are *almost* the right position for me, but I think longer term I'm likely to get some raised ones, I feel 1 or 2cm would make a huge difference.

The build quality over all seems high and it's been very comfortable to ride, actually almost surprisingly so, I thought I was going to regret not splurging on the version with the carbon front fork but that's not the case, and I just took it through some pretty bumpy terrain.

Looking forward to cycling on this a lot more around Hong Kong and Shenzhen - if you're in the area and see a stupid looking white guy on a white Java Neo, do say Hi!.

Edit: It was worth any premium I might have paid just to go in to the store and experience the bikes I was interested in the flesh - as well as the extra time they spent checking over the bike and ensuring it was set up properly - buying online, would have been a mistake.

Drop bar neo before the drop bar neo

I've just about finished by drop bar conversion of the flat bar neo 3 carbon. Really I should have just bought the drop bar one but when I put money down for this the official drop bar version didn't exist.

I still need to sort out a rack, I have two of them but each have their own issues. I want to make a video on all the stuff I have found out if the rain would just go away...

Is €650 a good total price for a Cranston R20 Max delivered to Germany?

I'm currently looking at a Cranston R20 Max. The base price is €490, but shipping and customs duties to Germany add another €160.

Given the current market, is €650 a fair deal overall for this bike? Thanks!

Aliexpress €3 (soon €5 fee) - Doomsday has come for EU

(See full list of the corporations involved with the lobby that pushed this through here.)

In case EU residents aren't/weren't aware, EU parliament voted to add a €3 fee per item category (not per package) and will increase to €5 later on. Well I thought that was VERY annoying considering this was lobbied for by major corporations who just manufactur all their products in China/SE Asia etc and then charge 500%-1000% of what I can buy the same item for directly on aliexpress. Again, see full list of the corporations involved with the lobby that pushed this through here.

Anyway, starting recently the prices on Aliexpress for ALL items went up. Instead of +€3 per category, it's +€3 per item if not WAY more.

So now if I need to buy a pack of replacement bolts for example, what would cost 1 euro before will now cost €1 + €3 = €4 total.

Now to make things worse, if it's a special type of bolt where I can only order 1 at a time, now I have to pay at least +€3 per bolt as the website didn't calculate automatically +€3 per category at checkout. So say I need multiple bolts or I need to test different sizes now it's €1 + €3 + €1 + €3 + €1 + €3.

So €12 instead of €3. See how this is already very annoying very quickly for buying small replacement parts?

Aliexpress made bike/BrompNOT maintenence and upgrades very affordable and accessible. We can't find many of these parts sold locally, certainly not made in EU. This was a common response by certain people, but again this fee has nothing to do with protecting local manufacturing, this fee was pushed on us by middle men corporations selling aliexpress junk in Lidl for €20 when it costs €3 to buy it direct from China. So we're forced to pay jacked up prices now. Yippee.

Cranston D10. It’s no G-Line, and that’s okay.

First time foldie owner. Liked the idea of having one but didn’t want to go all in on a G-Line straight away, so here we are. Steel frame, 20” 406 wheels similar-ish concept on paper but honestly nothing like it in person. Still, no complaints so far.

Wider bars were the first thing I changed. Stock cable actually reaches 720mm which was a nice surprise, running a Nitto bar now. Chucked my Brooks C17 on straight away, had it on my previous bike so it was a no-brainer. The stock saddle looks decent enough though.

Swapped to Billy Bonkers straight away, I just love the tan wall look. The stock Conti seemed fine honestly, just not my thing and I can sell them to recoup some coast as they are brand new. Bigger change was the easy wheels the 60mm stock ones were basically useless on anything that wasn’t glass-smooth tarmac. Swapped to 80mm inline skate wheels and it feels like a amazing to push the bike around when folded. But one down aide is the skate wheels add significant weight about 450g compared to the 120g of the 60mm wheels. Swapped to MKS allways ezy superior pedals, they are buttery smooth, the stock ones felt way too narrow for me.

Bag is a Metal Resident x Pitz, picked it up secondhand. Fits the MBP 14”, groceries, water bottle and random bits without any fuss. Really happy with it.

Weighed it after the Billy Bonkers swap came in at 13kg stock. Not bad. But current weight is around 14.5-15kg. Gonna enjoy it like this for now and put sole miles on it.

Brompton alternative with disc brakes

Dear all I presently ride a 2015 flat bar 3 speed Brompton and I'm looking at a 20" wheel replacement which is lighter with hydraulic disc brakes. Just wondering if it's worth (majorly) servicing my Brompton or just buying something like a Java Neo 3? UK based if that helps....would appreciate any thoughts and opinions!

The Java Neo 3 Carbon is like a G Line but better

Here is my first lazy video on the Java Neo 3 Carbon. I have a lot more to go over with it including comparisons with other bikes but I only have some much time each day ;p. I'll make future vids I guess.

Rollable fenders. Is it works for Java Neo?

He guys!

I like the look and lightweight of rollable fenders.

But what bothers me is that it needs to be attached to the rear suspension...

Is it safe for the frame and suspension?

And one more question: is it really works for Java Neo?

Thanks in advance.

PS

Sorry for my English.

Advice for Newbie

Hi all! After a recent trip to London I was exposed to the wondrous world of folding bikes. I’m coming at this as someone brand new to this. A Brompton is out of my price range so I was wondering which clone is, in your opinion, the closest to the design and use of a Brompton? I have looked at Mint and Cranston but don’t know enough to make a real decision. I’m open to any advice you can share. Thanks!

Just received my Bromptnot

I have had my brompton clone a Mint T9D-20D for just over two weeks. I have loved it so far.

I was impressed in the quality of the build. I have swapped out a few things. Put on a better seat. The little springs to help with the folding pressed steel folding catch things pop out. I have a titanium seat post ordered. Some detachable pedals. A couple of front bags on order.I changed out the 52 tooth front chainring for a 42 tooth one as I live at the top of a reasonable hill. Different handgrips and a mirracycle mirror.

If you have been considering buying one I have no complaints with mine. The manufacturing quality looks really good .
