Tern or something else? Urban commuting + transit and indoor storage.

Just finished a move into a much more urban area and my riding needs have changed. I'm keeping the roadie and mountain bike around, but I'm quickly realizing I need something more portable as a daily machine.

My regular commute is short and completely doable 100% on the bike, but for going farther in the city, I'd love to take a bike with me on the subway for those first and last miles. A folding bike is pretty much a requirement for that to work with local transit rules around peak hours.

I've managed to get in a few test rides on a BYB P8 and Link 7i at my local shop, both of which felt pretty solid, and I think I have a wishlist of features.

* 20" wheel minimum (couldn't feel right on a friend's 16")

* easy to fold, unfold, and move through transit stops and elevators

* around $1k usd, but I'm a little flexible

* fenders and chain guard are ideal. I will absolutely ride in any weather I can stand to be outside in.

* non-electric. I don't want to deal with charging my ride if I don't have to.

I really like the Link 7i for the internal hub, fully covered chain, and dynamo light, but the BYB P8 is noticeably more compact when folded and the metro rack seems handy. I'm torn between those models, but also open for reccomdations on other brands that can check off my list too.

Warning: Catastrophic BXT Carbon Frame Failure on Second Ride (Split in Half at 20mph)

I purchased a carbon road folding bike frame directly from them on May 21. On my second ride using this frame, it suffered a catastrophic structural failure and split completely in half while I was cruising at approximately 20 mph in a smooth, dedicated bike lane. There were absolutely no major obstacles, potholes, or impacts prior to the snap. The only feature on the road was a standard, minor pavement bump measuring less than an inch. The frame simply buckled and tore into two pieces under normal riding stress. The sudden collapse threw me hard onto the pavement, and the handlebars violently struck my chest before I rolled onto the pedestrian sidewalk. Nearby riders stopped and offered to call 911. My spouse ended up transporting me directly to the emergency room. After multiple X-rays and CT scans, I thankfully escaped internal organ damage or fractures, but I suffered intense physical trauma and an expensive hospital bill. I contacted BXT for a refund and provided them with on-scene photos, detailed close-ups of the fractured carbon tubing, images of the cross-section walls, and my redacted hospital documentation. Their customer support is demanding that I provide video footage of the active ride and the crash occurring, which is a completely impossible and unreasonable requirement. They are completely denying responsibility for a life-threatening manufacturing defect. I have attached high-resolution photos of the frame cross-section at the fracture point. To those experienced with carbon manufacturing layouts, you can see clear inconsistencies and voids/thin spots in the carbon walls that likely caused this failure under minimal load. Avoid BXT. Their quality control is non-existent, and riding one of these frames is an immediate safety hazard. If you are currently riding one, please inspect your tubes carefully.

Bag for Cranston Trifold

I ordered a Cranston D10 about a month ago and am still waiting for it to arrive. In the meantime, though, I’d like to start looking for a bag that fits the front rack assembly.

I need a bag for my daily commute to work. I need to carry a laptop and possibly a rain jacket, and I’d like some extra space for a few groceries. So the bag should be medium-sized.

Additionally, it would be great if the bag were waterproof.

Are Cranston racks compatible with the original Brompton bags? Are there other third-party manufacturers that are compatible with Cranston and that you can recommend?

20-355 / 18” tire options for Aceoffix D10

I replaced the Kenda Tires with 20-355 / 18” Billy Bonkers. I’ve had 4 flats in 6 weeks with Billy Bonkers and TPU tubes on a folding bike. So it’s not like I’m riding 1k kilometers a week. BB folding tires are lightweight and do indeed look great, but man, this just sucks. Second option (@peter is running this): Schwalbe Motion Big Apple Race Guard 18x2,0 (50-355).

Do you know of any other options in 20-355 / 18”?

Edit: right, I meant 18x2,0 aka 50-355, thanks @pareto!

Does anyone have experience with the Dahon Lunden?

I've recently been looking into three-fold bikes in "Brompnot".

Dahon Lunden is one of the bikes I've had my eye on, but since I can barely find any related reviews or discussions online,

I wanted to ask here what the riding experience of the Dahon Lunden feels like.

Is there such a brompnot?

One that has all of the following:
- accepts 20 x 2.3 tires
- disc brakes
- internal cable routing (preferred)

I don’t care so much about weight, I want a beefy folder that can accommodate 20x2.3 and has disc brakes.

Added plus if it has internal cable routing.

I don’t care about the material, but would prefer steel > titanium > aluminum.

TIA!

NBD!!

Got my Cranston D10 delivered today! Very happy indeed with it! Very little tweaking needed to be done out of the box, just some brake adjustments and pumping the tyres up a bit more! Everything seems pretty decent quality and all nuts and bolts are tightened to the kinds of torque I'd expect. In addition, I was actually impressed that they seemed to have actually greased this bike! I haven't checked the hubs but I can see evidence of grease in places like the headset and BB. A lot more than what many manufacturers will skip out on nowadays!

So, the intention for this bike is to be more of a gravel and offroad bike for my bikepacking. I plan on putting a brompton P bar on so I've got more options for handlebar positions. I generally prefer a more upright position, but it can be nice on hills to have a lower one to lock in. Everything seems to work really nicely. Compared to my brompton I do feel like I float over the bumps and things, but it's definitely a lot less nippy and speedy than my brommie. Really happy and looking forward to getting out on some more adventures with it!

Question: Is a suspension block upgrade worth it? 🤔

Is changing from a rubber suspension block to metal spring a worthwhile upgrade?
I'm considering it for my Mint T9C 16".

Carbon brompnots .. risky or not ?

I have spent much of my life fixing and modifying bikes .

I own several bikes but only one 2003 Brompton bought new.

Basically as an old guy with minimal income the idea of a lightweight folder appeals but no matter the price I don't want to buy anything that won't last , especially as I am getting tired of fixing stuff..I wanted to ask anyone who truly understands durability especially of carbon , and has owned these new sub 10kg machines bro give their opinions and and

advice.
