When Dharma Realization and Psychological Functioning Don’t Match
Been thinking about the difference between knowing the Dharma intellectually versus actually embodying what it points to.
We can have an incredible grasp of Buddhist philosophy, speak fluently about emptiness, compassion, non-attachment, karma, ego, etc... and still have psychological patterns that are either pretty ordinary or even seriously dysfunctional.
My question is: how do we know whether a teacher is actually qualified?
We’ve seen plenty of cases where teachers had impeccable credentials: recognized lineage, extensive training, titles, connections, empowerments, and a deep understanding of the teachings... all while their actual psychological functioning reflects a very different (and sometimes deeply dysfunctional dynamic).
What are the actual criteria we should be looking at?
