Dear Devs: Please Add Checkpoints at Shrines and Bosses

Love the game so far, love the early access and thanks for this awesome game, BUT 🙂 dying in a shrine and then respawning all the way back at a beacon makes the run back really tedious, especially because there aren't many shortcuts like you normally get in other Souls-like games. I really hope you add checkpoints at shrines and before boss fights.

It would also be great if we could collect our gloom before entering the boss arena. A few times I walked into a room without realizing there were two bosses waiting for me, died and then couldn't recover my gloom without starting the fight again.

Again, thanks devs and congrats for this awesome game.

After finishing Gothic Remake on PS5 Pro, I honestly cannot understand the praise

First, the PS5 Pro version is in an unacceptable state. I experienced audio problems, visual artefacts, crashes, quest bugs, lost progress, and other issues throughout the game. Some of these problems happened so regularly that I seriously question how the console version passed proper QA testing.

However, the technical problems are not even my biggest disappointment.

As someone who played the original when it released, I expected the remake to modernise the things that were actually outdated, such as movement, NPC interactions, controls, and inventory management.

Instead, they over engineered mechanics that were never broken.

Combat is worse than the 25 year old original. It feels slow, heavy, and unreliable even against one enemy, yet the remake often forces you to fight two or three enemies together because separating groups is much harder now.

Lockpicking is unnecessarily complicated and inconsistent. Sleeping and recovery are more restrictive. Finding quest NPCs feels like hide and seek for example, Wolf in the New Camp for the minecrawler armour quest. Climbing was turned into a separate skill without being properly explained.

The economy is also a mess. Selling the same items lowers their value, and different buyers offer different prices, turning basic trading into unnecessary management.

Meanwhile, the inventory still lacks proper sorting for things like one-handed weapons, two-handed weapons, armour, and consumables. The controller mappings are also awkward.

That is my biggest problem with the remake: they fixed things that were not broken and ignored the things that actually needed modernising.

Ironically, this remake made me appreciate the original even more. It reminded me that Gothic was a masterpiece that was far ahead of its time, so far ahead that even its own remake could not top it.

Orginal: 9/10

Remake: 5/10

Was Gothic’s Lockpicking Designed by AI?

I’m convinced the lockpicking system in the Gothic Remake was designed by an AI while it was hallucinating.

Why are level 2 and level 3 locks sometimes harder than level 4 locks? There is no logical difficulty progression. You expect higher level locks to be more complicated but the system feels completely random.

Either nobody properly balanced and tested it, or the AI responsible for designing it forgot what numbers mean.

Edit:
As an Al developer myself, I can say that this system may have been designed or implemented with Al assistance including the way its randomness works. Many development teams now use tools such as ChatGPT and Claude for coding so it is easier than ever for Al-generated code to become part of game development.

Sony Should Remove Gothic Remake from the PlayStation Store Until It Is Fixed

The game is in an unacceptable state on PS5 Pro. It has sound problems, visual artefacts, hard crashes, lost save files, and quest bugs that completely block progress, such as the issue with Lester in the Old Mine.

There is absolutely no way this game was properly tested on PS5. The audio problems and visual artefacts happen almost every 10 minutes. A game in this condition should never have passed quality assurance on consoles.

As a huge fan of the original game who has played it multiple times, I genuinely believe Alkimia has butchered this remake. If Gothic 2 ever gets a remake I hope they stay away from it.

As for THQ Nordic, I have completely lost faith in you. I will not be buying the new Darksiders game either, even though it is being developed by one of my favourite studio Gunfire Games, the developers of Remnant.

The state of this game on PS5 and possibly Xbox as well, perfectly represents how the gaming industry has reached its lowest point when it comes to quality, testing, and releasing finished products.

The new Lockpicking! Are the developers serious about it?

Is the new lockpicking system meant to be a troll mechanic?

I’m a huge fan of the original but the lockpicking system is just so boring and unrewarding. I expected the remake to stay loyal to what made the original great, but it feels like the only thing they stayed loyal to was the sluggish combat and movement. Bring back the orginal lockpicking plz!

edit:

I’m honestly convinced some people defending this system haven’t opened a single chest or maybe they don’t even own the game. Spending 15 minutes solving a lockpicking puzzle just to find a piece of bread? That is not fun, challenging, or rewarding. It is just tedious.

Night Time Darkness Is Unplayable and Causes Eye Strain

If I increase the gamma for night time on ps5 pro, the daytime becomes way too bright.

The developers clearly exaggerated the darkness at night to add more tension to the game. I’m all for that, but this level of darkness is unplayable, even with the torch on.

I’m putting the game on rest until this issue is addressed, because my eyes get strained every time I play during night time.
