How much I make Busking

This post was inspired by one a few posts back, but Id like to note the importance of sharing your experience and take from busking.

Arts aren't a typical 9-5 . It is important to know how much to charge/expect. It's a lot like being a restaurant server, but not having a check-average to base your budget on.

Instead, you have to decide what your art is worth and how much money makes sense for you.

So anyone asking the question "how much do you make" is an incredibly valid and VALUABLE question.

As a personal example: There are no active balloon artists in a 50mile radius of me.

How in God's name do I decide what to charge? Base it on my materials? What about the materials I use to practice? What about the time spent learning a skill? What about drive-time to the gigs? What about making a "reasonable" profit?

Most advice on here is "Look at what others charge." But that isn't a viable answer if everyone is quiet about what they earn.

This reticence about financial talks is why so many companies can under pay.

We don't have a "market rate" except what we and others charge.

This is NOT something that should be locked because of hurt feelings.

I have a very different opinion of you mods, now.

Now, that said: I'm a balloon artist and I busk as a side hustle.

If I plan the "event" right, I make about $50 an hour (minus costs). I've also had nights where I made $5 over the course of 4 hours.

None of those numbers include materials and time spent.

It is important to know how to value your work, and people getting upset is NO reason to lock a thread.

Help this be a helpful community, not somewhere that caters to hurt feelings. Thanks, Mods!

Bargain Balloons

Disclaimer: I have ZERO official connection to this company. I am a customer and now a fan, but I receive no compensation for this post.

Holy Shit Wow!

These folks did it again!

Firstly, they carry my preferred brand (Decomex). Secondly, my first experience with them was AMAZING. Thirdly, my second experience was also great!

While they didn't have any more of my preferred brand in stock, they have tuftex at a similar price.

THEN they got them to me in 36 hours.

Amazing service, and I'll use them until I cant!

Customer for life as far as Im concerned!

How do I charge?

Alright yall, look!

I started doing this publicly and I am immediately getting offers for private parties.

First world problems, right?

So I'm comfortable with the tipping model when busking, but how the hell do I figure out an hourly rate to offer? I'm the only one in my area offering this as opposed to generic events, so I'm not sure where to even start re: Hourly rate.

How do yall do it?

Pumps and Performance

Hi all,

I've finally ventured out into the public sphere, and am starting to see a take-off in interest.

As I continue branching out to various events and such I am learning a TON about my set-up, but one thing is still evading me:

What the hell do yall do with your pump while you twist?

My tufftex pumps both have what I assume are lanyard holes, but a wrist strap is proving cumbersome.

I usually don't have a table, so I'm looking for mobile options and just ideas and inspiration on set-up.

I can describe my current gear/ set for yall if it helps, but I'm looking less for a critique and more for inspiration.

Thanks in Advance!

Ballon Animals and other things

Hey hello howdy, yall!

I'm a local resident and artist, and I specialize in balloons.

I perform and busk at various local events, and am available for private events! I also teach twisting-classes (with equipment and supplies to take home) as well as juggling classes that include instruction and construction!

My work was recently featured in the Fourth of July parade in Downtown Bloomington on the Pillar Arts float (you may have seen me twisting like mad for the kids as we walked!)

My IG is the only social media I currently use, and it doesn't have a lot of great examples yet, but I am open for bookings and that is currently the best way to contact me.

Please check me out on Instagram at bluecollar.scholar and DM me through either for details.

Eta: Is there a better place to advertise local, niche services? I'm small-time, a native, and basically a birthday clown. Izzat alright by the mods?

Clowning without a costume and the skills needed

Hey all,

Im gonna be blunt: I loathe the aesthetic of the traditional Western clown.

I understand the need for an eye-catching display, but I'm working on alternatives.

I already juggle fairly well ( 3ball cascade, 2-1, 2-3-1, and a few I don't know the names of), and I've got a solid repertoire of 12 or so balloon sculptures.

What other skills should I learn?

Unicycling is out (my knees are fucked), though I used to do it when I was younger.

I also spun plates when I was young, and could do so again with props.

The only thing I can think of right now that doesn't take a ton of equipment investment is close-up or street magic.

Are there any other skillsets ( beyond crowdwork and such, I'm working on that) or easy-to-carry magic props (think fit-in-a-pocket and forget it) that yall would recommend?

Thank all of you buffoons in advance! I love this stuff!

Shout out to Bargainballoons.com!

I placed an order yesterday morning, called to modify it hours later, and it still arrived TODAY!

The whole process was painless and the product very quality (though I've only twisted a dozen or so at this point)

Absolutely phenomenal customer experience!

Circus and Performing Arts

Hey all!

I'm looking to connect with "circus" folks.

Circus, carnies, any peripheral performing art (looking at you, fire-folks, hoopers, poi-people) and the like.

I've got some ideas and some contacts but I'd really love to connect with some active folks in this underserved area of our arts community!

For what it's worth, I'm a juggler and former fire-performer.

Service-June-Saskatoon Berries

It's early for the berries, but I'm looking for public locations. The few I know of on the BLine have all been severely affected by cedar-apple rust the past few years.

TIA!
