Recently joined a gym — anyone else feel awkward not knowing what to do?

I recently joined a gym, and honestly, I wasn't expecting to feel this awkward.

Everyone around me seems to know exactly what they're doing, while I'm standing there wondering:

  • Which machine should I start with?
  • Am I using this correctly?
  • How much weight should I lift?
  • Is my form completely wrong?
  • Should I just copy what someone else is doing?

I even hesitate to ask for help because everyone looks busy, and I don't want to interrupt them.

I'm curious...

Was it just me, or did you feel the same when you first started?

If you did, what helped you get past that stage?

What was the most confusing thing when you first joined a gym?

I have a genuine question for people who are new to the gym (or remember their first few weeks).

When you first walked into a gym, what confused you the most?

For me, it wasn't motivation—it was having absolutely no idea where to start.

I remember wondering things like:

  • Which machine should I use first?
  • How much weight is too much?
  • Am I using this machine correctly?
  • Should I copy someone else's workout?
  • How long should I spend on each exercise?

It felt like everyone else knew exactly what they were doing except me.

I'm curious if others had the same experience or if your biggest challenge was something completely different.

I'd love to hear:

  • What confused you the most?
  • How did you eventually figure it out?
  • Is there anything you wish someone had explained on Day 1?

P.S. I'm collecting feedback because I'm building a tool to help gym beginners feel less overwhelmed. I'm not selling anything here—I'm genuinely trying to understand the biggest problems before I build further.
