Why I jailbroke my Kindle, and why you might want to do It too.

>First of all, I want to say a big thanks to the guys behind Jailbreak, KOReader, and Zen UI. It’s totally free. These guys don’t want to sell you anything, don’t want to show you ads - what’s up, Amazon - they just have passion, love reading, and want to improve the user experience for everyone. Thanks, guys!

A month ago, I didn’t really know much about jailbreak. I thought that I already had everything I needed, and that was enough. But one day, since English is not my native language, I got really tired of having to use my phone just to translate some phrase or ask AI for context.

As I’m a developer, I just imagined how cool it would be to have the ability to create your own AI plugins and avoid using a phone. That’s how I found out what Jailbreak and KOReader are.

Some important things:

  • If you’re cool with your stock Kindle, it’s totally okay not to install Jailbreak.
  • No, you probably can’t totally brick your device. I didn’t find any stories about that.
  • Yes, you still have warranty.
  • Yes, you can still use your stock Kindle UI at the same time. KOReader is just an app.

  • Yes, you can delete everything if you don’t like it.
  • Jailbreak is not about piracy. You can do that even with a stock Kindle. Please support authors.
  • 5.18.1 is the last firmware you can jailbreak for now.

Long story short, this is the list of Jailbreak features that you might like:

  • It is faster, much faster than Kindle UI. It’s crazy how a small team of developers could make it that much faster than Amazon developers.

  • No ads, suggestions, or telemetry.
  • Synchronization with everything: other e-readers, iOS, Android, PC through Readest. It's free.

  • You can use plugins from the store to add features you want. For example, I created my own plugin I was talking about above to get explanation and context for words from AI without translation.

  • There are a lot of settings. You can literally change everything you want: font size, weight, contrast, margins, line height, UI, icons, etc.

  • Cool highlighting system.

  • You have the ability to use almost any format you want: EPUB, FB2, DjVu, MOBI, TXT, XPS, CBZ, CBT, HTML, RTF, DOC.
  • There is a new engine for working with PDFs.
  • Schedule for dark mode and light mode. Schedule for brightness and warmth.

  • You can set up your own wallpapers and more.

  • There are so many ways to organize your library, sort it, and change how it looks.

  • Dark mode for every Kindle, even if you have an old one. I also have Kindle PW 10 (2018)

  • Really cool reading stats and streaks.

  • You can use Google Translate or DeepL to translate.
  • There is a custom bottom progress bar with chapter marks: 303 of 933, pages left in chapter, chapter counter, book title / author header, etc.

  • And some guy, u/Unified-Field, created an incredible plugin called Zen UI that totally changes how the experience with Koreader looks and feels.
  • And lots of other stuff

So, this is my list of favorite things I found really cool and wanted to share with you guys. Hope you enjoyed it.

I kept putting off buying a Kindle PW 12 because I was almost sure that all new devices would ship with the latest firmware preinstalled - the one that can’t be jailbroken.

Then I found a post by u/Low_Excitement_1715, where he basically said that, in his opinion, all unopened devices still come with firmware 5.17.1, and that if your Kindle gets updated, it’s probably because you screwed something up - most likely by not reading the instructions carefully enough.

So I decided to test it myself and bought two Kindles.

Long story short: both of them came with firmware 5.17.1, exactly like u/Low_Excitement_1715 said.

So yeah, looks like you can still order these things and install KOReader right away.

Important:
Before you turn on Wi-Fi, you must fill up the Kindle’s storage. You should have only around 60 MB of free space left and then follow the instruction.

This is the most important step.Seriously, don’t fuck this up. If you forget to do it, the Kindle will update itself in the background, and then you’re basically screwed. At that point, just return it and try again.
