Osmo Wood Wax Application

Hi, All. I searched and didn't find an answer so asking now.

I'm going to apply Cognac color Wood Wax to a butternut console table I'm building. The table has a good amount of sapwood that's much, much softer, and lighter in color, than the heartwood. The heartwood is the majority of the table. I also have a decent amount of thick epoxy patches that I dyed brown.

I'm putting the stain on to try to darken both the heart and sapwood. And, to even out the difference in color between the two.

I did a load of quick samples of several different stains, dyes, and finishes and settled on the wood wax, which I'm using for the first time. The samples were very blotchy with the wood wax being the least blotchy. I sanded to 120 by hand for the samples.

I then did a few samples of 1 coat of wood wax on planed, sanded wood. It didn't look so great. I added a second coat and that improved the look but not greatly.

I then tried a sample with amber shellac I mixed up as a sealer coat. That looked better, but was inconsistent because I just slapped the shellac on and didn't concentrate on fine sanding first. All samples were applied with white scotch brite pads.

I've since read from Osmo that sealer coats shouldn't be used under wood wax and it should be applied with a cloth or brush.

My plan now is to sand the table to 220 per Osmo's instructions. Apply the first coat with a cloth rag, not scotch brite. Let it dry and then apply coat 2. Depending how it looks, I might add a coat of Osmo Poly-X.

Does anybody have advice or comments for things I might be missing? Or, any experience you have with wood wax?

How are these Chisels Used?

I started relief carving recently because I received a roll of gouges as a gift. These two chisels (name?) are in the roll. How are they used? The ends are a bit sharp, but they are blunt; no bevel.

Please let me know if I didn't check something on here correctly, first, before posting. I did read the FAQ's. Thanks.

Project for College Son

I'd like to build my son and his friends something fun or useful for their last year at college. I have no idea what to make. He lives with his buddies in an off-campus house. Somebody suggested a shot-ski.

I'm not creative. Any ideas? Thanks.

First Bedrock - Casting Oddity?

I just picked up my first Bedrock. Check out the different wall thicknesses on each side of the casting. Hopefully it shows in the picture.

Is this unusual? It took a decent shaving with a very minimal cleanup and no sharpening.

I have several Bailey's but haven't seen this before.

I'm new to hand planes as of last year so I don't have much experience. Thanks.

Stanley Hardwood Tote Color

Hi All - I scraped off the tote and knob finish on a Type 17 I'm lightly restoring. The tote is some kind of hardwood, beech maybe.

I'd like to treat the bare wood to get to the rosewood color, but not that almost black color that was initially on the wood.

Do people stain and then lacquer or shellac? Or, colored shellac? I haven't tried tint so I guess that's an option.

I'm willing to try anything. I already have garnet shellac mixed up that I used on a beech saw handle. On its own it's not dark enough, in my opinion.

I've watched many videos, read posts here and the seems to be many options. Thanks for any help.

Possible Plane De-Rust Problem

Hi everybody. I made the Ballistic rust removal solution and it worked well on most tools. However, I put a plane body in it and left it in for many days. I cleaned it afterwards but I guess not well enough. After sanding the body on a flat surface, on a drum in the drill press, and using a bench grinder wire wheel, this is the best I can make it. I think the solution created pits or an etch. You can see the line where part of the plane was out of the solution. I can't remove that line, either.

I plan on trying to sell this plane. So, I planed softwoods and hardwoods with it and it works well and doesn't leave marks on the wood.

Any ideas how on how to remove the pits/etching? Leave it alone?
