Concerns about transferring from Mechanical Engineering to Electrical and Computer Engineering (Is transferring from MechE to ECE worth it?)

I am an incoming freshman at UT Austin planning to major in Mechanical Engineering, but I have recently been considering transferring to Electrical and Computer Engineering.
From my understanding, the earliest I can apply for an internal transfer is during the spring semester, and if accepted, I would officially start as an ECE major at the beginning of my sophomore year. However, I am concerned about potentially delaying graduation by more than 1–2 semesters.
I know that as a non-ECE student, I may be able to take introductory ECE courses such as ECE 302 and ECE 306 during the spring semester (assuming availability). Would it be worth taking these courses even though I am not guaranteed admission into ECE? My concern is balancing ECE courses with MechE-specific requirements during the same semester and potentially overloading myself.
My main career interests are in computer engineering, embedded systems, robotics, and hardware-related roles. I am trying to decide between:
- Transferring from MechE to ECE as soon as possible
- Staying in MechE and pursuing an ECE master's later
- Staying in MechE while adding robotics-focused coursework (such as a robotics minor, if possible) and taking mechatronics/embedded-related electives
For anyone familiar with UT’s programs, which path would provide the strongest preparation for embedded hardware, robotics, and similar careers? Would a MechE BS + ECE MS provide enough ECE depth, or would transferring earlier be better?
Additionally, if I apply for an internal transfer and get accepted, am I allowed to decline the transfer and remain in Mechanical Engineering, or does acceptance automatically move me into ECE?
