I’ve been crying every day

I’ve been crying on my way to work every day since RTO. It all just feels AWFUL. I’m snapping at my kid and partner, I’m forgetting things, my sleep is awful, and my heart is SO SAD.

I’m trying to make the best of it but this feels so cruel and awful, my moral is in the dumpster. I really value what I do (wildfires!) and think it’s important for the state but I don’t feel valued at all. I feel tormented. I’m so sad for the people of CA losing so much work for us because of the depression.

It’s not just me either, my whole floor seems miserable and hallow eyed.

Call the governor at lunch

Keep being loud and noisy! Keep pestering! Keep up the pressure! Call him everyday. Make him have to hear about this. Live rent free in his mind.

Call Newsom: 916-445-2841 press 1 for English and 6 to talk to someone

Cal CalHR 916-909-3758 and

916-909-3705

Here are some talking points:

—Spending more money on gas isn’t good for my mental health, how dare Newsom claim otherwise.

— Being forced to increase our greenhouse gas emissions is terrible for the planet and Californias climate goals.

— It’s embarrassing for the fourth largest economy to not negotiate with their workers fairly.

— stop waisting $225M in tax payer dollars while doing harm to the environment and families.

I’m sure you all have more!

Call Newsom at lunch

Once again, its your DAILY reminder to call the Governors office and let them know how you feel about the RTO.

(916) 445-2841

Extension 1 for English and 6 to talk to someone.

Here are some things you might mention:
— stop waist $225M in tax payers money to increase GHG
— sign AB1729
— California should lead the nation on technological innovation and working from anywhere in the state shows that’s possible.

Remodel and rent OR sell?

We just inherited some paid off properties totaling about $2M, 3 apartment buildings and a house. The apartments are in fine shape (but likely need some major maintenance stuff in the next few years) and net about 10k a month after property management fees.

The house is a mess and likely needs about $100k in repairs to make it rentable. It’s hard to know the value but maybe around $450k fixed up, $300k currently, and would net $3,100/month after repairs. We have the money for the repairs, and would otherwise invest it in ETFs.

We don’t live in the area, and the area has a lot of weather (frozen pipes in winter, water damage in summer kinda thing). Basically, it would be a hassle for us to manage this from afar but once it got going it could fall easily in line with the other rentals.

I like the idea of keeping it as a rental to continue to diversify our assets, but I’m not sure it makes sense.

What would you do?

Swim lesson fear

My kiddo is excited by swim lessons and really wants to go but once we’re there he will not get in the pool. He’s been swimming with us and liked it. We’re taking it slow with him, and his teachers are super nice but ooof. It’s a big disappointment for him that he’s so scared.

How long did your kid take to adapt?

Never forget, Never forgive: Restaurant/Bar Associations lobbying for RTO

Lately a lot of companies and federal agencies are all in on RTO, like its some sort of virus going around and companies are quickly trying to claw back any semblance of work life balance we once had, despite our data-backed production and improved morale.

There's clearly a unified push behind the scenes, but I never assumed who was part of that push. I always assumed it was the landlords, the share holders, or senior leadership who couldn't figure out how to run a company they didn't physically see or have under their thumb, but I never guessed it was also the restaurants and bars.

"Among others, the DC-based Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington (RAMW) actively lobbied to bring federal employees back to their offices in Washington, D.C.. This effort is driven by significant declines in foot traffic and sales following the shift to remote work, which hit a critical point in 2025."

So basically because they weren't making as much money, they pushed to bring us back into the office so we would spend money at their over-priced shit hole establishments.

Fuck our morale, fuck what we wanted, fuck our families and work life balance... THEIR overpriced eatery needs more sales!

Time to aggressively start packing your lunches and refusing to put money in their pockets. The best revenge would be to watch them go out of business even with us back in the office.

Fuck these people. Fuck their businesses.

---------------

Additional:

  • Impact on DC Restaurants: As of mid-2024, many federal agencies were using 25% or less of their headquarters capacity, which left D.C. restaurants and surrounding businesses struggling due to a lack of lunch crowds and after-work, Happy Hour traffic.
  • Support for "Show Up" Act: Organizations supported federal legislation, such as the "SHOW UP Act" introduced in early 2025, which aimed to force federal agencies back to pre-pandemic remote work policies.
  • Lobbying Goals: The National Restaurant Association and other commercial groups advocated that restoring in-person work was crucial to revitalizing downtown urban centers.
