Is TEMU spying on me?

This is a QUESTION, not a game post. IT IS NOT ABOUT A GAME!

I have never searched for, or even accidentally viewed reflective safety vests on Temu. EVER… last week, I bought one from Amazon.ca. I’ve never searched the web for them, I’ve never even talked about them. I simply ordered one (and a yellow hardhat) from Amazon. But now, when I open the Temu app on my iPad, many of the listings I’m shown are for various and sundry safety vests! WTF? Why would Temu start showing me stuff I have literally NEVER looked for on Temu? (I ordered straight from Amazon for the quick delivery time.)

Yeah yeah, this seems like another one of those “I was just discussing <something> with friends and all of a sudden, I’m inundated with advertising for THAT product.” stories, but this is bizarre! (And a bit scary.) Does Temu monitor what I’m doing elsewhere?

Quick Question about re-Downloading TiviMate

My old Shield Tube has finally given up the ghost. It will no longer recognize the wired network connection. I’m stuck temporarily using wifi. (It sucks). I broke down, gathered all my nickels & dimes from under the couch cushions & bought a new Shield Pro. (Holy crap they’ve gotten expensive!) Anyway, it should be here in a few days.

My question - I’m not much of an Android guy, so my pre-apologies if this is a stupid question… Does the Google Play store work like the Apple Store? I bought TiviMate premium from there years ago. Will I be able to simply download it again for the new Shield (Through the Play Store link on the Shield) without having to pay for it again? I haven’t purchased many Android apps… just a few for the Shield. I’ve never repurchased/re-downloaded an app twice, so I’m not sure how that works. Will it recognize that I’ve already bought it once and just allow me to re-download it and install it?

Thanks.

Incredible discovery from Reddit for TiviMate on a Shield

Wow! I am so excited to have FINALLY found a resolution to this, I just had to post about it.

I’ve had a Shield (Tube) for almost 5 years, and paid for TiviMate around the same time. I’ve “trialed” at least 30 IPTV providers over the years. I bought a NordVPN subscription for my Shield. I’ve played with every “buffer size” setting, and almost every other settings in both TiviMate and Shield settings, yet nothing seemed to resolve the one primary recurring problem. I’ve tried VPNing to almost every country on earth. Plain, Obfuscated, Onion… nothing resolved the issue.

Regardless what I was trying to watch, every hour or so (usually more often) the program would buffer for EXACTLY 14 “sweeps” of the little blue “wait” circle, then after 14 sweeps, the program would come back, jumping 14 seconds into the future. (Often skipping some critical part of the show.) It drove me crazy for a couple years, but eventually I just wrote it off as “Well, this is what happens with IPTV…” My wife & I still cursed every time it happened, but we got used to it. Until yesterday…

I read someone’s post here suggesting “Turn off IPv6” in the Shield settings. That just happened to be one thing I’d never tried. Shield settings/Network & Internet/IPv6 to OFF.

I turned it off yesterday morning. Since then, I’ve been watching the same 24/7 channels that GUARANTEED some amount of the “14-second buffering” problem previously. Since then, I have not seen a single moment of buffering at all. Not even 1 second! It’s incredible! Now I can watch multiple shows, one after the other with no buffering at all! I turned off my VPN and every channel for every provider now works! It used to be at least 1 in 4 or 5 channels I selected were “dead”. Again, I just wrote it off as “well, I guess this is what IPTV is like.” Since turning off IPv6, I haven’t hit a channel that didn’t work.

To whoever posted that suggestion in another thread here… THANK YOU! You are a GOD! 😄

Has something changed in one of the latest IOS updates?

For the past month or so, I’ve been having a hell of a time trying to relocate my cursor while typing text. (Doesn’t matter what app. They all do the same thing.) I used to be able to click virtually anywhere in a text block and the cursor would move there. Now, it seems like I’m constantly fighting to try to get the cursor to move to where I want it. Tap the spot 100 times (sometimes, with the Apple Pencil 2) but the cursor just refuses to move. Especially to the end of a sentence… It does it for other edit attempts as well. Trying to get a “select all” prompt is like playing chess with Satan.) I thought for a while “has aging caused my body capacitance to change so radically that the screen no longer recognizes my touch?” but it’s happening for my wife on her Apple devices too. Am I the only one having this issue? (I haven’t searched the sub yet.)

And what’s up with this new “Your request has been rate limited. Please take a break for 116 seconds and try again.” foolishness? I only type with one finger. I’m CERTAINLY not typing too fast… I’ve asked about this elsewhere and it’s like it’s not happening to anyone but me… Does ANYONE know what I’m talking about or am I just going insane? (Yeah, two things can be true at the same time.) 😁

“Rate limited” posts - Is this new?

I access Reddit mostly using the iPad Reddit app. Just in the last week or two, WHILE typing a post, I’ll get a little black pop-up message telling me I’m “rate limited” for “86 seconds”. (Or whatever time). As I type (it doesn’t prevent me from continuing to type) it keeps popping up, with the “timer” showing fewer seconds each time. I can’t actually POST until the timer runs down.

Is this a new Reddit thing? Is it coming from the iPad app? It SEEMS to be triggered by post length. The longer the post, the more likely it appears. Where is it coming from? Is there some way to turn it off?

Is this a Reddit thing or an iPad Reddit app thing?

The last week or so, while posting on Reddit, I’m getting these little black pop-up notices from the bottom of my screen, essentially saying “You’re <doing something> too fast take a break for 86 seconds” or “40 seconds” or whatever. If I continue typing, it just keeps popping up with a lower “wait time”. On my iPad, I’m a 1-finger typer, so it can’t POSSIBLY by my typing speed… what am I doing too fast, and is there a way to turn that off?

“Your request has been rate-limited for x seconds please take a break and try again later.” WTF is that? (I’ve never seen it before).

Is there a secret to holding the DJI RC2 controller?

Every time I fly my drone, about 10 times through EVERY flight, my right palm touches the bloody screen and calls up the photo/video display over top of my camera view. I’ve intentionally tried to adjust how I hold the controller, but I ALWAYS somehow end up pressing my palm on the right screen edge while flying, causing a big black screen that I have to press “back <“ on to get back to my camera video. If it were only occasionally, it wouldn’t be so much of an issue but it’s happening CONSTANTLY!

Is there a setting or something to turn off the screen touch that pops up the photo/video view screen without affecting other touch controls? Am I holding the controller wrong? Help please! Nothing worse than threading my drone through tight spaces when almost every time, in the tightest part of the flight the fold of my palm inevitably presses that damned screen! What am I doing wrong? Anyone else experience this, or do I just have fat palms?

INPUTTING a video source to a Mini 5 Pro?

So, I recently acquired a small handheld infrared thermal camera. It has a USB C port that charges it, plus it outputs images and live video via the same port. (You can plug it into any USB C video input and the camera’s display is output from the USB C port.) - I started wondering if there might be a way to output the live infrared video INTO my flying Mini 5 Pro, such that the video would be transmitted to the RC2 controller on the ground. I suspect I already know the answer, but thought I’d ask anyway…

Ultimately I’d like to add infrared capability to my M5P, rather than spending all of my retirement funds to buy a drone with infrared capabilities. Is anyone aware if the drone will accept and transmit a video source that is “alternate” to the drone’s built-in camera?

I’m willing to disassemble the handheld camera to shed some weight, but I don’t want to start mucking with re-wiring either the drone or the camera. I’m not concerned about it not having a gimbal - It would be a fixed mount on the drone. If there is a way to pump video from a different camera into the drone’s USB port and somehow switch the transmitted video from the built-in camera, I’m hoping maybe I can DIY a thermal-imaging drone out of my M5P.

Anyone know if such a thing is possible? (Relatively simply?) I have a decent 3D printer to design and build any necessary mounting bits, but if there is no simple way to get the video out of the thermal camera into the drone’s video stream, there’s no point in trying it. (The thermal camera has its own rechargeable power source, so it won’t use the drone’s batteries.)

Am I butting up against the impossible?

M4P Stupid crash

Unfortunately, my controller didn’t catch the moment of the crash. I would have LOVED to have had at least some video of my M4P nose-diving into the Atlantic Ocean.

I have (had?) a “drone dropper” device attached and was flying some fishing line & a lure out into the ocean from shore for my BIL who was holding the fishing rod. I guess I may have been flying a little too fast & didn’t warn him to keep his hands away from the reel while it was unspooling. I got about 300 yards offshore, my BIL mistakenly got his thumb in the way of the unspooling fishing line, the line went tight and SPLOOSH. My M4P is now forming a new coral reef at about 700’ deep in the Atlantic.

It’s all good though. I was so heartbroken to lose my M4P, I was able to whine and moan enough for my wife to agree to my purchasing a DJI Mini 5 Pro Fly More Plus combo. It should be arriving today! (So excited!) Lesson learned: When drone-fishing, go SLOW and be prepared for the line to unspool jerkily to avoid a costly (but stupid) mistake. I had that M4P for 3 years and had only crashed once (no damage, easily retrievable, even in the dark of night) and I think I got overconfident (and stupid).

DJI Canada offered me a 15% discount on a new M4P because I forgot to renew my Care Refresh last year. They absolutely refused to let me apply the discount to a new M5P so I just said “To hell with it. I’m upgrading!” and blew almost 2 grand (CDN - What’s that, about $1.12 USD?) on a new M5P Fly More Plus Combo. Best crash I’ve ever had! 😁

I asked the DJI rep if my Rayneo Air 4 glasses would continue to work on the M5P with the same RC2 controller I had for my M4P and he replied that the Rayneo glasses could NOT be used on my M5P. He said it wouldn’t work, which is demonstrably wrong. Then he came back and said my DJI Goggles 3 wouldn’t work with the M5P… (is that true?) Doesn’t really matter because I can simply continue to use my Rayneo glasses, which I prefer over the goggles anyway. I’ll continue to use the Goggles 3 with my Neo. No problem.

Why do most AIs struggle so much to give accurate information?

My father recently passed away. Everyone in the family is traveling to our “tradition family homestead” in Nova Scotia. I wanted to create a simple video slideshow using approx. 170 photos and background music for his memorial get-together. (He didn’t want a funeral or any ceremonies. He just wanted us to go out into Chedabucto Bay on my uncle’s lobster boat and toss his ashes there. I asked 3 AIs for recommendations for a simple slideshow maker that would generate a 15 minute slideshow from existing photos for free. They all recommended CapCut and… I can’t remember what the other one was.

EVERY SINGLE INSTRUCTION provided by the AIs were WRONG. In detailed instructions, they often referred to options that did not exist, options that didn’t do what they described, and every time I responded with “That won’t work. There IS NO Save As option in the file menu.” Or something similar.

Inevitably, for EVERY SINGLE MISTAKE it would apologize, and appeared to recognize that its constant errors were costing me both time and confidence. It always had some kind of long, drawn out excuse for why it was wrong, and would post an “alternate step” that inevitably either didn’t work, or worse, screw up my whole project to the point where I’d have to go right back to the beginning, erase everything I’d done and start all over.

In EVERY case, I gave it the full official name and version number of the software, yet it still continued to reference non-existent items and functions in its detailed instructions. After a few hours, it had me searching for specific configuration files, suggested registry changes, etc. I got so frustrated, I switched to a different program, ignored the AI and just figured it out on my own.

My question: If AI is getting all “smart” and scary, how can they all be SO CONSISTENTLY, FRUSTRATINGLY WRONG?

I’m an Oracle PL/SQL developer/DBA. I’ve occasionally asked AIs TO EVALUATE (and correct) blocks of code I’d written. Again, in every case, running the “validated” (or straight AI written code, which ALWAYS generates Oracle errors,) I’d report the error to the AI and it would again profusely apologize and give a big long explanation (excuse) for why it got the previous answer wrong and make correction suggestions which, every single time, would fail for some other reason. I cycled through this process until 3:00am trying to get this project done because I listened to those stupid AIs. When I finally got fed up, I shut off the AI, googled some answers and just figured it out on my own. Took me 1/2 hour!

What I don’t get is, why are billions (trillions?) of dollars going into these shoddy and unusable AI systems? (I tried Co-Pilot, ChatGPT and Grok.) They ALL had the same issues. My question is: WHY? Why are things available for public/corporate/government use that a) don’t work more than 20% of the time or worse, cause an irreversible problem that required a complete reset. (Grrrrrr)

Is my wife going to kill me?

So, I just clicked “Buy Now” on Amazon.ca for a pair of Rayneo Pro 4 AR glasses for almost $500 CAD. I did this at 4:30 in the morning while she slept. They don’t arrive until next weekend, when we’ll be away for the 2nd week of our vacation in Nova Scotia. I have a bunch of cheap Temu crap being delivered around the same time, so hopefully I can just sneak them in with the rest of the cheap junk that’s coming. If she finds out I just blew another $500 on “drone gadgets”, she MAY just have that coronary I’ve been waiting for, and the life insurance will cover the cost of the glasses. Win-win, no? :-)

What are your thoughts on the Rayneo 4 Pro with my mini 4 Pro and my Neo? Would I have regretted paying half the price for the Rayneo 3 Pro instead, or did I just spend more than I needed to for essentially the same product?

Why can’t Siri recognize a town name?

Yesterday, I had to meet someone at a Dollarama store in a town in Ontario, Canada called “Morrisburg”. I asked Siri “Siri… (uh huh?) Please give me directions to the Dollarama in Morrisburg, Ontario, Canada”. I rephrased it at LEAST 6 times, and every time, it would default to some street in Buffalo, NY! (If you like, please try it yourself… I’m curious if it works for anyone else) I finally just ended up typing my destination because that ridiculous Siri had me screaming at the top of my lungs “MORRISBURG!!” but no matter what, Siri could not find it. WTF? My map software found it no problem.

Do ISPs “chase” VPN users?

I am in Canada, and use Roger’s for my ISP. Most of the time, I can run TiviMate during the day without interference. In the evenings, all 5 of my IPTV providers start buffering. I switch on the VPN, go back to the channel, and it’s good for about 15 seconds, until it starts buffering again. I switch VPN servers, sometimes switch to another IPTV PROVIDER, AND WITHIN 15-20 seconds, that channel starts buffering.

It seems almost like it doesn’t matter that your packets are encrypted via the VPN. It seems like Roger’s is “tracking down” the IPTV packets regardless whether they are encrypted or not. I can flip to YouTube and everything is fine. Then, I flip back to TiviMate and it’s fine again for a while… Maybe 20-30 minutes before it starts buffering again.

Some VPN countries seem to be somewhat better than others, but it seems like Roger’s eventually always tracks it down and starts messing around.

I’ve also noticed if I switch to a Canadian or US channel with commercials, they don’t seem to buffer as much. It’s mainly happening on 24/7 channels and others with no ads.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how this could be done by the ISP?
