Pools Are Opening: Swimsuit Safety

It's summer soon! Remember that children's bathing suits should always be a super bright neon color! The safest colors are orange, green, yellow, and pink. Neon pink is for pools, not lakes. I'm talking blindingly bright neon.

Silent drowning is very serious. Aesthetics don't matter when it comes to child safety. Dress them for their needs, not your pictures. In the same vein, the more neon cloth, the easier it is to spot! Full one piece, rash guards, etc. Two pieces are adorable, but more coverage is better for safety!

Best Remedy/Treatment: Wrong Answers Only

We've all received "advice" about how to "cure" or "treat" our illnesses. Rather than asking what's the worst advice you received, give us the best, but wrong answers only.

If you don't know how a wrong answers only post works, you pretend like the thing you are mentioning is the best thing ever and everyone is missing out on this awesome thing. For example, "Omg, putting Tea Tree Oil on my pillow got rid of my migraines! Everyone needs to do this!" (With the understanding that for some people, those out there things may be actually helpful, so no being mean if someone says that they actually do that.)

Here's mine!

AxSpA: Y'all, I cannot emphasize enough how amazing my chiropractor is. He gave me an X-ray and said I didn't even have AxSpA! All I needed was an entire year of weekly adjustments and I'd be CURED!

Road Closure Reminder

Duke St between Monmouth Ave and W Trinity Ave will be closed from May 26th to September 18th.

Reschedule your commutes as needed. If you live along that stretch of road, make sure to talk to your landlord or the city about access expectations. Also, maybe buy earplugs.

The city recommends rerouting using Buchanan Blvd or Washington St. The project is to expand trail access and add more functional green space downtown.

(I don't work for the city. I just saw the signs and they started on Main St, so then I freaked out thinking the closure was way bigger than it is.)

Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke [Potential Spoilers for themes]

1.5/5 Stars

The book is bad, like objectively so, but I can see why many people with similar backgrounds would find it a pleasant acknowledgement of their struggles with fundamental Christianity. I give it a 1.5/5, a star for gripping storytelling in the core part of the story and half a star for an interesting depiction of the harm of Christian fundamentalism on so-called "privileged communities" that should "arguably" not struggle with (but they clearly do; it's a real problem). It lost 3 stars for the postpartum glossing alone tbh (but also the dismissiveness around sexual assault). The presentation of struggling mothers is clearly calling attention to a real problem in the fundamental Christian community (and even non-fundamental if we're being honest), but the lack of any acknowledgement, even in an afterward, is unacceptable. This book would've been better as a creative non-fiction with researched critique interwoven with fictionalized experiences. By the end, I really wanted to like it. But after actually reading the end, my first thought was, "Oh yeah, a privileged white woman wrote this," which kind of defeats the point about this book being a critique of privileged white women (there's nothing wrong with privileged white women writing critiques or writing in general; the issue is how the book was advertised not matching the reading experience). In the end, because the book makes light of postpartum psychosis and depression, and I fear that rather than calling a valid critical eye to the "trad-life industry" it's instead going to further alienate women who experience postpartum psychosis, anxiety, and depression, I will not be recommending this book. It wasn't a waste of a read, but there are many other satirical social critiques that can do similar work with less dismissiveness.

Proxy and VPN Advice

Hello! A couple of posts on here had me freaking out about accidentally being on a proxy network or VPN without meaning to. As a result, I now check the network information of any wifi I connect to (I probably should've done this before but whatever).

There are lots and lots of free IP address checkers online. I used 5 or 6 different websites as well as following instructions on how to manually check in my system settings. If you want to be tripley sure that you're not using a proxy or VPN, just Google "proxy checker" or "VPN checker" and use one or more of the many free websites to check. I mean, if every website is saying I'm not on one and my manual review doesn't say I'm on one, then the likelihood I'm on one is pretty slim cause apparently non-detectable proxies require a lot of work to maintain and I don't think my local library is working that hard haha.

Reminder: Commencement is Tomorrow

Duke, NC State, and UNC all have their commencements this weekend. It's also mother's day weekend. Consider your driving plans accordingly. If you commute for work, I highly recommend leaving 30 minutes to an hour earlier than you usually do. There will be lots of people on the interstate staring at their GPS and going 65 (rude, everyone knows 70 is the socially acceptable minimum).

This is just a funny post acknowledging the drier dashes everyone is experiencing and a reminder that work like this has busy seasons and dry seasons. Give it a bit to come back around and don't rely on freelance stuff like this to cover necessities (unless you're super good at planning and budgeting, in which case, I'm jealous).

Alternative titles:

- Someone Let a Geologist Loose and Now They're Licking the Rocks

- Someone Messed Up the Altar and Now the Deities are Pissed

- Someone Called the Wildlife Protection Agency and Now the Animals are Gone

I'm a generalist, so I can only make funny titles about projects I see. If you have other project groups, please share your funny "dry dash" titles! Don't forget to follow the confidentiality rules and not name any actual project titles/numbers; this is all in good fun.
