I'm at a crossroads. Help!
I'm at a crossroads. A little background. I'm an artist. 2d and 3d generalist and was looking to transition into a more technical role. Since I enjoy playing with tech too.
The two options before me are technical artist in production studio or software dev.
I have self taught myself playing with APIs and build simple web applications for my own use case. I'm already good with html, css and understand basic JavaScript. Can work with graphQl and already know UI | UX, because of the design background. I understand CMS, APIs and automation albeit using tools like n8n.
I'm not good at the hardcore programming stuff like C++ and C# and python. But it's something I'm looking to learn in the next one year.
My current dilemma is I'm in Africa, so getting artist jobs is a bit of a challenge because of creative industry prejudices and industry in the continent is not that advanced. So software development looks a bit promising. With the current state of the software engineer landscape would you recommend I make the complete transition or is the industry really as horrible as everyone online says?
And what role would you recommend? Was thinking of combining UI | UX and frontend. But I also enjoy a lot of backend stuff.
My biggest concern is software engineering is too saturated. The technical artist role is less competitive but is geo-locked.
