We need to protect the surviving players

Amid all the loud online noise, legal debates, and finger-pointing over the Aurora tragedy, we are completely forgetting about the surviving teammates.

It is heartbreaking to see comment sections treating these kids like suspects or accomplices, blasting them with toxic cyberbullying and reckless accusations over manufactured internet scripts and rumors.

Can we please respect the surviving players? They are grieving, not targets for online rage.

I think we really need to take a collective step back and look at how we’re treating the surviving teammates of Rene and Divine. What happened in Aurora is a complete nightmare, and it’s completely natural to want answers and justice for the two boys who lost their lives.

But drawing a line between demanding accountability from the adults in charge and actively terrorizing college kids shouldn't be this hard.

Imagine dealing with the heaviest loss of your college life, only to log online and see internet mobs launching hate campaigns against you over manufactured rumors and gossip.

By all means, let the proper legal investigation do its job to scrutinize the coaching staff, the safety protocols, and the system. If there was gross negligence, the adults responsible should face the music. But leave the remaining players out of the online circus.

Influencers are using the issue of Rene and Divine as content to gain engagements even spreading fake news!

Can we normalize waiting for the actual legal investigation instead of cyberbullying the remaining players and the entire school?

The tragedy involving Rene and Divine is absolutely heartbreaking, and it’s completely understandable why everyone is angry and looking for answers. Two young student-athletes losing their lives is a massive loss, and the grief surrounding this is incredibly heavy.

But we seriously need to talk about the toxic line we’ve crossed on social media over the past few weeks. The amount of coordinated cyberbullying, unverified scripts, and absolute hate being directed at the surviving teammates and the entire Ateneo community is getting out of hand.

People are treating this real-life heartbreak like a true-crime documentary where they’re desperate to find a villain, completely ignoring the psychological toll on the remaining players. These are college kids who literally watched their brothers drown right in front of them during a training activity. That is severe, lifelong trauma. Instead of receiving empathy and the space to process their grief, they are being blasted in comment sections, treated like accomplices, and targeted by online mobs over manufactured propaganda and gossip. Sila rin naman ay biktima rito, but people are too blind with manufactured rage to care about the mental health of the students who survived.

What makes this online witch hunt even crazier is how detached it is from the actual facts on the ground. Reliable sources close to the situation have already confirmed that the university wasn't even aware of the activity, and sponsors had zero involvement in organizing it. Yet, the algorithm keeps feeding this narrative of a massive corporate cover-up because loud, sensationalized outrage gets more clicks than quiet accountability.

In reality, the groundwork has been handled responsibly from day one. There has been a dedicated liaison point person micro-managing the support and providing the family with daily updates since June 10. The school quietly stepped up to shoulder everything—from local transfers, autopsies, and embalming, to the full wake services. They’ve even laid out standing commitments to cover all expenses to fly in family members from Nigeria (including airfare, accommodations, and visa assistance) for the entire repatriation journey back home, plus a standby fund that’s ready the exact moment the family is emotionally prepared to receive it.

But of course, a quiet, coordinated effort to support a grieving family doesn't go viral; a toxic hate campaign does.

By all means, let the national investigative bodies do their jobs, scrutinize the system, and hold the coaching staff strictly accountable if there was gross negligence. That is what due process is for. But let’s separate the actual pursuit of justice from the mindless propaganda, legal misinformation, and cyberbullying targeting the students and the community. Turn down the internet noise and let the proper legal channels run their course without tearing down traumatized kids in the process.

SUPPORT FOR BOBET AND DIVINE ALILI!
