If basketball is our national obsession, why are we still struggling on the international stage?

The Philippines is one of the most basketball-crazy countries in the world. Every barangay has a court, millions follow Gilas, and basketball is part of our culture. Yet we still find it hard to compete consistently against the world's top teams.

So what are we doing wrong? Is it our player development, coaching, grassroots system, or something deeper?

It also makes me wonder if we've put too many resources into basketball alone. Instead of building more basketball courts, should we also invest more in sports where Filipinos have already proven they can succeed, like weightlifting, boxing, gymnastics, athletics, or football?

I'm not saying we should stop loving basketball—I just wonder if a more balanced approach could help Philippine sports as a whole. What do you think?

Why are some Filipino football fans celebrating Gilas' loss instead of supporting another Philippine team?

I understand being disappointed with Gilas' performance, but I've noticed some football fans celebrating the loss because they want football or even individual sports to replace basketball as the country's main sport.

We can criticize the way they played, but cheering for them to fail or hoping basketball loses its place in the Philippines only divides Filipino sports fans. Whether it's basketball, football, volleyball, or individual sports, every athlete who wears Pilipinas deserves our support. We all represent the same flag. 🇵🇭

It's time to hire outside the PBA.

Ang unimpressive ng Gilas under Cone. It feels like whatever success Gilas has is in spite of him, not because of him.

I haven't seen this man make a good in-game adjustment. Instead of killing the momentum when the other team makes a run, he just lets them play.

Gilas looked unprepared against Australia. Full stop. We were destined to lose this game, but it was like this team believed they were losing before the start of the game. Why were the guards going under screens against a team that shot 24 threes in the previous game?

The offense. God, the offense. An offense is supposed to get the players in a good position to score. Instead, they're just running the motions. Credit to the Aussie defense, yes, pero it's frustrating to watch the same damn triangle action generate fuck-all. Mukha pang lutang mga players out there: nagbabangaan sila sa actions coz they don't know what the fuck they should do. They play too slow.

Ewan. I was expecting to lose this game, but I didn't expect it to be this fucking terrible.

ALSO:

* relegate Dwight to a three-and-D guy. He can be our Gabe Norwood on defense, pero offensively I think we're trying to make him do too much.

* June Mar, time to hang it up gang. Next time Gilas comes calling, just don't answer. All respect, pero kahit ang laki ng advantage niya in the post di siya makascore.

* Our guards need to be better on defense. We can't have both Juan and RJ be cones, mane.

* I know Kiefer ain't coming back... but maybe? Baka pwedeng magsorry buong Pilipinas and mag-sign ng treaty na bawal siyang ibash LMAO.

* Also Kai Sotto pls gulayin mo na mundo ulit I miss u

Would the PBA, PVL, etc. be better with a city teams instead of sponsor teams?

This question has been stuck in my mind for a while, there is something I kind of despise in this country when it comes to sports leagues in this country

The fact that sports teams here are based on sponsors instead of cities (Capital1, Barangay Ginebra, etc.).

The main reason why I'm not a fan of this is the fact that it makes fans feel like bandwagons, like with cities you can have loyalty to a team as a certain team will either be within the vicinity of where you live, or you live in that city, whereas with sponsors, it's either your favourite player plays there, or you like the brand (i.e. I like drinking milk, so I'll support Alaska), and what happens if your favourite team disappear: Crispa, Toyota, Añejo, Gordon's, Air21, etc., We've become a bandwagoning sports country

Now the question, would these leagues be more successful if they have city names in their team names? They can still keep sponsors ala Euroleague, but there needs to be a city name in their team name.

Would fans have a better connection or loyalty with their teams if they have a team from Manila or Cebu?

Could we have a stronger and more popular league?

What are your thoughts?

Why does every positive Gilas post turn into "switch to another sport"?

I recently made a post saying that Gilas Pilipinas could be a dark horse for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup. I wasn't saying we'd definitely win the tournament or become favorites. I was just saying we have the potential to surprise teams if everything comes together.

What surprised me wasn't that people disagreed. It was that many comments immediately shifted to:

"Basketball isn't our sport."

"We should just focus on individual sports or football."

"Basketball is a waste of time and money."

I'm curious why that reaction is so common.

Basketball is arguably the most popular sport in the world.

We have passionate fans, talented players, and a long basketball culture.

Does that mean we'll become a world champion overnight? Of course not. But is it wrong to be optimistic and want to see Philippine basketball improve?

I also think it's possible to support basketball without taking support away from other sports. The country can invest in volleyball, football, athletics, boxing, weightlifting, and basketball at the same time.

So I'm genuinely asking:

Why do you think there's so much negativity whenever someone expresses optimism about Gilas Pilipinas? Is it because of past disappointments, unrealistic expectations from fans, frustrations with basketball governance, or something else?

Kapag May Medalya, Saka Lang Naaalala

The fact that our national government and a lot of LGUs still prioritize basketball-related projects while watching the success of our non-basketball related athletes just shows how detached they are from the sports community.

Reactionary celebration lang kaya nilang gawin, pag nanalo or nag succeed doon lang magbibigay ng suporta na temporary pero in terms of policies and projects walang gagawin na long term, kung hindi mga basketball court na ginagawa lang parking at isang excuse for substandard shelters.

Alex Eala - Tennis
Ej Obiena - Pole Vault
Hidelyn Diaz - Weight Lifting
Zedrick Ivan Honorica - Cycling
Carlos Yulo - Gymnastics

And many more athletes out there ang kailangan ng support pero for every success na nagagawa nila, basketball court padin ang naiisip ng mga pulitiko na hindi rin naman talaga nakakatulong sa actual na training ng mga gusto mag basketball kasi nagiging parking lot lang most of the time.

SKL sa basketball, bastos raw ako

bro, so may laro kami and may pusta yon na 4500. mind u larong probinsya pero di larong mindanao. so yon na nga bigman ako 6’1 tas tong bantay ko siguro nasa 5’5 - 5’7 na pa 50y/o na, and her daughter is watching.

((issue na niya yan ever since))

so i’m thinking kung ichachat yung anak niya kasi feeling ko mas nabastusan pa ko na ako yung sinabihan na bastos e, kasi basketball lang naman yon tas ganon ganon pa.

Kai Sotto has not played for the national team since November 24, 2024, fully recovered from January 2025 injury, completed recent BLeague stint, but backed out from Gilas despite his availability. It now safe to question Kai Sotto's commitment to the national team program?

Can we please respect the surviving players? They are grieving, not targets for online rage.

I think we really need to take a collective step back and look at how we’re treating the surviving teammates of Rene and Divine. What happened in Aurora is a complete nightmare, and it’s completely natural to want answers and justice for the two boys who lost their lives.

But drawing a line between demanding accountability from the adults in charge and actively terrorizing college kids shouldn't be this hard.

Imagine dealing with the heaviest loss of your college life, only to log online and see internet mobs launching hate campaigns against you over manufactured rumors and gossip.

By all means, let the proper legal investigation do its job to scrutinize the coaching staff, the safety protocols, and the system. If there was gross negligence, the adults responsible should face the music. But leave the remaining players out of the online circus.

Question about Gilas Coach

Im not really a big basketball fan but if may game ang gilas I watch it.

Question lang, why is the head coach (Tim Cone) allowed to coach a PBA team simultaneously.

My POV as a football fan:

  1. Wala bang bias sa team selection because he would favor his players in PBA?
  2. How can he watch/scout filipino players playing abroad if he is busy with his current team?
  3. Same rin sa developmental ng future players, does he work with them rin para kapag pro na they can integrate to the gilas team better?

I would like to hear everyone’s opinion about it.

Baseball 101 for newbies

Calling all baseball fans in the sub! Help this clueless parent out 😂

My son did baseball camp this summer and really wants to do the sport.

The thing is our family knows nothing about baseball but we want to learn more about it to support our son's growing interest.

So my question is--what got you into baseball? What leagues do you recommend we watch? How can we watch from the Philippines?

Thank you for the comments!

Double overtime loss for Gilas
