5 marks off an A in Alevel Maths after taking it a year early… now I have to resit and I’m genuinely so demotivated

I sat A-level Maths a year early because I’m doing Further Maths in Year 13. I put a significant amount of time into Maths this year and, unfortunately, I neglected my other A levels more than I should have because I was expecting to achieve a high A* in Maths.

I practised extensively, including repeatedly doing full papers under exam conditions, and I felt very confident with the content. However, I ended up being 5 marks below the A boundary*.

What is particularly frustrating is that I didn’t lose marks because I didn’t understand the material. The marks were lost through careless errors (misreading questions, arithmetic mistakes, sign errors, and similar issues). I know that sounds minor, but after putting so much effort into preparing and repeatedly practising under timed conditions, it is really disappointing to see that this was ultimately what prevented me from getting the grade I was aiming for.

I now have to resit Maths in Year 13 alongside Further Maths and my other A levels. I’m worried about managing everything, particularly because I had already devoted so much time to Maths this year.

I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been in a similar situation. If you took Maths early, narrowly missed an A*, had to resit in Year 13, and subsequently achieved an A* (particularly alongside an A* in Further Maths), I’d be interested to hear about your experience.

I’d also appreciate any genuinely useful advice for reducing careless mistakes in exams. At this point, I’m not really looking for advice on learning the content , I’m more interested in how people improved their accuracy and exam technique when they already understood the material.

I’m feeling quite demotivated about the situation at the moment, so hearing from people who have managed to turn it around would be really reassuring.

Am I cooked for Imperial JMC because I got an A in A-level Maths in Year 12?

I’m applying for Imperial JMC and I’m starting to panic a bit about my Alevel Maths result.

I took Maths early in Year 12 and got 250/300, which is an A. The problem is that my firm offer requires an A* in Maths, so I’ll be resitting Maths in Year 13.

My other stats are:

Predicted **4 A***s overall (math, fm, econ,cs)

All 9s gcse

250/300 in A-level Maths (A)

Resitting Maths in Year 13 with the aim of getting the A*

I’m worried that Imperial will see the A rather than the A* and consider me less competitive for JMC, especially given how competitive the course is. Does taking Maths early and getting an A put me at a significant disadvantage, even if I resit and get an A*?

Would appreciate some honest opinions , am I actually cooked, or am I overthinking this?

Tmua questions expecting me to derive new theorems…(previous tmua takers plz help)

Im this close to go insane!!

Theres these sorts if questions where u literally are exoected to know a ridicilously niche method…its so silly.

Can u guys help, like do i need to know other methods beyond the syllabus and ukmt problem solving ability?

Ive been told u need to learn all of fmaths, and i DONT have time, i mean ive nitpicked some chapters from pure y1 and they are pretty useful like properties of roots and series but other than that u dony rlly need anything else.

What did u guys do as an addon to help with these sorts of questions and im not talking abt the normal spot a series or geometry i mean the combinatorics ones or the wierd ass ones that require u to make a new method.

Ugh this will be such an interesting summer.

Tips on waiting for results day as someone who unexpectedly did better than expected

Top note) Prayer is a real miracle, i remember the day before i prayed my heart out to allah and said “to give me the grade i know i worked hard for” and when i tell you they did their magic…..i had FIVE subjects i was exactly on the grade 9 for 😭 if u dont believe in miracles now is the time to ❤️
Allah is just and whatever happens know its for the best.

  1. DONT trust ur gut instinct for essay subjects (englishes, business, history etc) if u have low expectations or high expectations it will likely be the opposite, its best to not have an expectation on how it went since you never really know what type of examiner youll get, for this type of subject its crucial you actually just wait until results day and not catastrophise or fantasize if that makes sense. I for example expected whole heartedly i would get 66 in english as ive never gotten above in mocks and got 99 in the end! However i had a friend who was obsessed with english and was so confident he will get 99 but ended up with 56 he was heartbroken for days!

  2. have a backup. If you do bad then thats ok. But its its good to plan beforewise which sixth forms ull call, what subjects youll choose to do, which schools are close and which subjects they offer etc etc its good to plan for the worst to reduce stress and uncertainty on the day.

  3. Open ur results with people you actually care about and know wholeheartedly they wont have a pinch of jealousy or bad vibes. This moment should be private to you and only to you, if u do good or do bad only u and the people who endured the journey with u deserve to know. I made the mistake of openeing my grades infront of everyone and when i tell you the negative energy i felt was scary, i ended up leaving like 3 mins after and phoned my mum and celebrated with my family instead. I also phoned my bestfriends at the time and we even went out after school to the park to have a small celebratory picnic! 😁

  4. film ur reaction!! I regret not filming it as it would have been so amazing to see my reaction to such hard work and end of such an era, if it went bad then i can delete it if not i get amazing memories!! Win win situation. Itl be such an amazing memory ti cherish i have such big regret of not filming it

  5. if u do bad its ok if u do good its ok, its not the start or end of the world, its a matter of trying something and seeing the results! Life doesnt magically change after results day i promise u its all in ur head, academically speaking ofc it does but other than that not at all!

  6. drop all the people u never liked ie block them, i remember getting so many calls and messages abt what i got and i simply ignored and blocked cuz i knew they wouldnt be happy for me. This is a time where you seriously grow up as a person and not take ur time for granted with people that dont deserve u ❤️

  7. goodluck everyone!

Results day armageddon

Every clock in my house is lying to me.

I checked my phone earlier and it said July. That's obviously wrong because I've been living in the 37 minutes before opening Results Hub for about three weeks now.

Every time someone says "August" I hear static.

I tried to watch TV but every sentence sounded like "Unfortunately, you have narrowly missed your offer."

I opened the fridge and genuinely expected my grades to be inside.

Last night I dreamt UCAS Track became sentient and just replied "lol" whenever I refreshed it.

I don't even feel nervous anymore. I think I've gone beyond nervous and entered some strange fourth state of matter where I'm just haunting my own house waiting for an email that doesn't exist yet.

My family keep asking if I'm excited.

Excited?

I've forgotten what excitement is.

I looked in the mirror this morning and for a split second I swear I saw "A*A*A*A*" reflected behind me, but when I turned around it was just the wardrobe.

My final non-bias maths grade boundary predictions

FYI: i did actually analyse it straight up i wasnt biased and wasnt harsh nor nice.
I also used AI to compare all polls, mark schemes, examiner reports of past papers compared with our series of papers. I did omit 2022,21,20,18and 19 as i believe theye arent accurate for nowadays but i used 2023, 2024 and 2025 as refernce instead.

Im scared shitless too cuz i counted my marks and they are BOrDerline 250-255 im fucking scared but oh well.

Stop worrying and enjoy ur summer as u might aswell enjoy before resitting oop….

Again we say fuck u edexcel!!

Am I being irrationally worried about A Level Maths grade boundaries?

I genuinely can't stop thinking about grade boundaries.

My rough estimates are:

  • Paper 1: around 75/100
  • Paper 2: around 90/100 and for p3 i think i can bag 95/100 hopefully

That would put me somewhere around (255-260/300), which I know sounds strong on paper, but I'm really worried because a lot of people online are saying Paper 2 was easier than usual and that grade boundaries could rise.

What's making me anxious is that every time I remember a mistake I made, I start thinking: "What if everyone else found it easy and the A* boundary ends up ridiculously high?"

Im so conflicted especially considering how every year people always underetsimate the grade boundaries....

I feel so defeated as i really really really need the a star ive lwk been contemplating my life choices and the concept of life bro.

For people who have sat Edexcel Maths before, Is there any realistic chance of the A* boundary jumping up even abit, or do people tend to overreact after exams?

I'm probably just overthinking it, but I'd appreciate some honest opinions because results day feels a long way away right now.

P2 was still hard

I dont care what ur aiming for but paper 2 was still harder than all pure papers in 2025?!!
And 2024 cuh!!

People saying that grade boundaries will be higher calm tf down.

Ps: i got 84 on both papers after finding the mean (i did rlly bad in p1 oops)

u/OperationNori2009 — 2 months ago

I havent been able to sleep/forget…

Guys i genuinely am not usually the type of person to be like this but after pure paper 1 maths i genuinely cant move on its impossible.

I was expecting an A star cuz i worked my ass off!! I did all past papers and get consistently 90+ on each of them!! I WAS Expecting new topics ofc but the way i made so many careless mistakes was genuinely heartbreaking. Like on the sectors question i did know how to do it but i forgot to times by 2…

This meant ill be getting around 70-80 on this paper which is just crazy ridiculous for someone who was comfortable in the a star territory.

Is anyone in the same boat cuz i genuinely feel so heartbroken 💔

(Ps im year 12 whos gone start fm content in yr 13) so dont u dare say im just a ”fmaths student” the only content i had known was a level.
