DOE sub - making enuf hours

hi everyone! i currently work in a nightmare of a private school and will be finishing out the year & starting Hunter for MSped in the fall.

I have a DOE principal who’s willing to nominate me to substitute in an elementary school, which is my preference as I’ll be heading to the DOE eventually.

I’m worried about making enough money – if I can sub 4X/week or more that would be enough. would I be able to expect these hours? I understand it won’t look like this week to week (ie maybe some weeks full time and some with 2-3 days) but overall is this way off base? Would I also need to be a substitute at another school to pull this off? Willing to travel! When can you get added to sub central and substitute at other schools?

The principal is unable to nominate me until the window opens again in August/September, anything I should do before then to ensure I’m a good candidate who could get right to work?

Thanks again everyone!

drano not going down tub

hi, after snaking the bathtub drain for an hour with a hand snake and it still not draining, i used drano. followed up with boiling water a half hour later and no dice. now i have an inch of drano water in the bathtub.

i’ll be calling the landlord tomorrow to request a plumber but in the meantime should i try to bail this out? the bathtub very very slowly drained over last night so i would imagine it would do that again tonight.

thanks!

Shavuos is soon upon us! The holiday commemorating the giving of Torah & our eternal wrestling with it. Shavuot is typically observed with all night study sessions and classes & lots of dairy lol. This year Rabbis4Ceasefire is hosting a 24hr FREE (thursday May 21-friday May 22nd) online day of learning w some really cool looking classes — from exploring diasporism to blocking weapons sales to I*rael to Jewish SWANA printmaking/zines to a class on what protective presence in the west bank can & can’t accomplish — may interest some of you.

full schedule & registration (free!):

davening while exhausted…

i know the proper answer is ask my rabbi — and trust me, I will! but i also am curious as to everyone’s thoughts and citations.

I haven’t been sleeping well and bc of this, I have two problems during shacharis: yawning and stumbling. to be clear I daven solo in the mornings.

  1. i am yawning all the time — should i restart the word i yawn in the middle of, or just say the second syllable once my mouth is free to move again? any talmud to guide advice here?
  2. when it comes to shemoneh esrei i have more often stumbled in place. should i retrace my steps backwards and forwards? or just re-plant in the same place.

a groysn dank!

EDIT:
adding a little more context: my mind does feel awake and present but i can’t stop my mouth from erupting into a yawn. I daven as early as is permissible due to my work schedule (and inability to daven at work). hope to solve this problem thru getting better sleep & soon (as you can imagine this is a larger issue) but appreciate all of you in the meantime!

SpEd certification tests

hey! I’m enrolled in Hunter Masters in special education (all grades) starting this coming fall. Because I’ll be taking classes next summer, I was thinking about getting a head start on my certification test this summer (they need to be completed by october 2027). is this a stupid idea because I will learn so much of the material during my first year in the program anyway? Any thoughts or advice on studying for the certification tests or timing of taking them? Even if you are general ed, i appreciate the advice !

I need to do the following certification tests:
- educating all students (EAS)
- content speciality exam (students w disabilities)
- multi subject exam (i’ll be doing the grades 1-6
test because im pursuing elementary).

thanks
