Made my yearly batch of organic tomato fertilizer!

Made my yearly batch of organic tomato fertilizer!

This is 2 parts bone meal, one part blood meal, one part potash, one part organic granular. By no means is this necessary, organic granular can go a long way. This has just worked wonders for me in my garden the last few years and it’s cost effective, makes the organic granular go a much longer way.

Being an on-call field tech: managing the details

So I’m starting my new job as a field tech very soon for a large nationwide archaeology firm (U.S). I’m still a bit confused as to how the little details around travel and reimbursement work.

I get 50 dollars per diem for food and things like that (though I’m still not sure how that money will get to me). My travel and hotel are also paid for. One thing I’m a bit confused about aside from the per diem is how things like gas for travel or Ubers to airports fit into that. I was told that I need to keep receipts of these expenses and I’ll get reimbursed by the company. This is a bit strange to me and I’m hoping I can keep track of all these things. It’s also a bit daunting because I basically have no money right now, I’m a new college grad and my accounts are sparse.

Any on call field techs navigate a situation like this? Was it difficult or does it just sound more confusing than it is? I’ll likely reach out to HR and try to get more specifics before my start date, it’s a bit of information overload right now in the onboarding process.

How to report a dangerous tree?

There’s a Norway Maple tree on the hell strip down the street from my house and it is an absolute nightmare waiting to happen. It’s a tall tree probably 75 ft. And it’s been butchered over the years to avoid wires. First the chopped out the whole center than one side of the Y fell off now it’s just leaning completely to one side. The last 5 years it’s been dropping large rotting branches and all of its remaining canopy is looming over the road. More of the remaining canopy is dying and dropping and it’s only a matter of time that a storm brings it down. Recently a pileated woodpecker dug a few 6 inch deep by 4 inch wide holes five feet up from the base on the trunk. How do I get the town to take it down before it kills someone?

Emailing resumes?

So I’m assuming this depends from job to job but I’m wondering if it’s at all worthwhile to send email applications to companies that I match in terms of skill and experience even though they don’t have any postings at this time. I’m asking because there are a bunch of firms in my immediate area that would be much more efficient for me to commute to than the ones slightly out of reach that do have openings. I’m feeling like this could be a good idea as I sent an application to a company for a job that I was wholly unqualified for and they responded back offering me a job at their company that I was qualified for that they *didn’t have posted* so it seems like this strategy could be viable?

Can’t fully stop edema

I’ve had these growing indoors for almost a month. They need to make it one more week until they can go outside. I don’t know what it is but a few out of the 40 plants I’m growing just keep getting edema. It’s so peculiar because I have them under lights I have a fan on them and I let them dry out between waterings. Still some are getting edema yet they seem to still be growing rapidly including their roots. I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing and hope the edema clears up once they start going outside. Oh also it’s only a couple varieties, specifically a couple hybrid varieties like super sweet 100 and vivacious hybrid. Both very vigorous and hardy plants. The heirlooms look absolutely beautiful on the other hand

Started these on April 15, up potted them 5 days ago. They will be in these cups until May 17 so they have just over a week left before the move and I know they’re about to start shooting up.

I dealt with some edema issues this spring even with a fan on the plants and letting the plants dry between watering, not sure what that was about but it’s mostly under control.

I’m just entering the field of professional archaeology with a couple firms as an on call field tech. I already know that I love field work but I also know this is far from my end goal as a career. It’s a bit hard for me to look into the future as I’m really just not sure where this will take me. I’m deeply passionate about CRM work and want gain permanent employment in this field. Is there any advice you all can give me to best position myself for creating a long term career in CRM? I should add that I’m just now graduating with my bachelors and I’m going straight into the field for a year or two after that time if I haven’t received an offer for a permanent position, I will likely pursue a masters. It just didn’t seem like the best idea to go straight into a masters without cutting my teeth in the industry. Anyway I’d appreciate any advice about starting a career as an archaeologist aspiring for bigger things in CRM.

I’m graduating with my archaeology degree this month, I have lots of prior field experience, and a field school and I’ve applied to probably 15 field tech jobs in the last two months. In the last week I’ve gotten 2 replies, one from a small firm with a good reputation, located within 2 hours of my house, they do most all of their work locally. This small firm basically asked me to start asap just over email, the president of the company seemed impressed with my resume and everyone in the email chain seemed very nice and enthusiastic. After learning that I was graduating I a week or so (couldn’t start immediately) they said that they would reach out in the next week.

I just got another response from a very large firm that does nationwide work and som work abroad as well. They’re also known for their marine archaeology. They just reached out looking to set up an introductory phone call.

Basically all of this is happening very fast and I wasn’t really prepared for it lol. Do I move forward speaking to both companies? I’ve heard field techs (which both jobs are listed for) often take up positions with multiple companies? Also is it strange the the smaller firm just seemingly wanted me to start without speaking to me are anything? It seemed very chill.

Anyway I’d appreciate some insight on this as I’m in a bit over my head right now

This is indigo blue chocolate grafted onto super sweet 100, the goal being to use the robust root system and disease resistance of ss 100 to make the indigo blue chocolate more productive.

I sowed about 8 of these vivacious hybrid seeds from Burpee. 7 of them are growing at normal stature but one of them is dwarfed. I’ve grown dwarf tomato varieties and this is exactly what they look like, as you can tell it has the same leaf development but is just 1/3 the total size.

I’m curious as to how this happens as these seeds are hybrid crosses which should produce a very standard and consistent genetic makeup. I’m assuming this has to be a mutation? Anyone get how this could happen?

▲ 21 r/Figs

I started rooting these cuttings back in February, by mid March they were potted up into these containers and have been under grow lights growing like weeds. I noticed one of them is pushing out a baby fig. I’ve been fertilizing regularly and the plants are doing great. Would you remove it or let it grow? I’m tempted to leave it even though I know it may slow down growth. They’ll have to be in these pots for at least another month (that’s when they’ll get hardened off) so I am almost ok with slowing the growth down, it’s getting a bit crowded under the grow lights.
