What… the hell…

What… the hell…

My garden is surrounded by concrete and asphalt and a wall, and it gets like an absolute oven at mid day.

Just checked my indoor thermometer (which connects to a sensor I have at the garden) it’s 110 degrees out there😭

My garden micro climate lets me plant super early but then I have to deal with the inferno in the summer time.

Thankfully the garden is in shade from 2:30pm on so it doesn’t get completely cooked.

First hang, and handle, went decent

I made this handle and it doesn’t look great but it’s not loose and looks solid besides the gaps at the head which are not ideal. I got a good wedge in the head and it seems right but I’m wondering if the gaps will be a death sentence or if it will manage with them.

Where do I go from here? Looking for career advice

Hi everyone, I graduated with my bachelors in Anthro with a concentration in archaeology and a minor in history back in May.

Since February 2026 I’ve been applying to around 40 jobs and have since been hired with two CRM archaeology firms as an on call field technician making 20$/hr. These were the only jobs I heard back from. I got home from school at the end of May and have since worked on a couple projects for a total of 10 days excavating in the field.

I have a bunch of field experience from college and the principal investigators and crew chiefs really seemed to like my work, even said they’d put in a good word for me. I don’t mind rough conditions and digging STP’s.

The problem is I’m an ambitious person, and I want to do more.I hate sitting around at home with no work. I haven’t had work for a few weeks now as I’m waiting for my next assignment, and I just want to be doing more. Even when I was working in the field I wanted to do more.

Ive been doing a lot of thinking about what pathways this could lead to and I’m just worried i may hit a dead end with the whole CRM thing. It doesn’t seem like there are any substantial firms within an hour of me so it’s difficult to find permanent work. Im open to jobs outside of CRM whatever those may be. Are there any other avenues that i could be exploring?

First time making an axe handle: restoring a Norlund Hatchet

Basically I want to know if anything here looks off or if there are any adjustments I need to make before setting the head tomorrow.

This handle is hickory and I made it with hand tools. The wedge I made is oak.

It took me forever to get the head to fit in at all and now that I got it on it seems loose? I’m assuming this is due to the convex inner shape of the axe hole? Anyway it does go close to flush down I just didn’t jam it down for the picture as it’s a pain in the ass to get off.

Reflections on my first ever harvest

I harvested 24 bulbs of garlic from 25 cloves I planted in October.

Overall they are quite small… but definitely large enough to be usable and I’m happy about that.

I have a few ideas about what caused the smaller bulb size. I know it wasn’t the clove size at planting because I planted all large cloves. I think part of it is due to an early planting date. I planted probably 2-3 weeks earlier than I think I should have so some tried to push up in the winter and got frozen back and gnarled. Also I had bug netting over the patch to protect them from leaf miners. This worked! But I think it may have also acted as a shade cloth. Some of the leaves were very long and wispy. I think this happened because I double layered the bug netting. Next season I will just use one layer. The last potential cause was under fertility. I have very sandy soil in my garden. I remedy this by layering lots of compost every season. I don’t really till the compost in very much. I think what happened was that I planted the garlic about 6 inches deep and kinda placed them in the less fertile sandy soil below the rich organic layer. Next year I’ll till the compost in before planting. I’ll also apply a hefty amount of bone meal, which I did not do this year. I’ll also fertilize in the spring more consistently, I only did in once or twice.

I could tell the bulbs weren’t gonna be very large because the stalks stayed pretty skinny where they entered the soil.

Still I have a lot of garlic! So that’s exciting

Fruiting time!!!!

I am growing a huge amount of tomatoes this year with 14 varieties total. Pictured are New Yorker, Prairie Fire, and Sweetie. There are many others beginning to bare fruit. The dry weather in the northeast is shaping up to provide a good tomato season. Just have to defend against pests extra hard when the dry spells begin to drag out.

I’m just confused

I graduated with my bachelors in archaeology in the U.S a few months back. I have a bunch of field and lab experience and have worked with CRM firms.

I am just at a loss.

I knew the pay was rough and the jobs were somewhat few. I was however led to believe that there was a path and a reliable one at that.

The path was described as getting a lowly field tech job and working at that for a bit before either getting hired full time or getting your masters, at which point you would be able to make a livable wage guaranteed.

I work a 20$ an hour job and I rarely get work. I’m signed with two CRM firms but most of the time I can’t even justify traveling hundreds of miles to make 20$ an hour, with expenses and car mileage and gas and tolls it gets ridiculous. Now I’m finding all these techs who have been working as temp techs for 10 years plus. How does that happen? How do you survive? I guess if you can make it work that’s cool, but it scares the shit outa me. I enjoy field teching but it’s kind of mindless work, and I already find myself wanting do more.

Anyway back to the whole masters thing. I thought if you get a masters you were basically guaranteed a salaried position, nothing crazy but a salary. Now I’m running into all these crew chiefs and even PI’s making not a whole lot more than the techs with a whole masters degree.

Now I’m on the fence if getting a masters is even feasible in terms of making a living. For me to pay to go back to school it would have to be guaranteed that I could get a salaried position at 50k a year. If not then I don’t see how that could be worth while.

It should be noted I’m also not really in the market for moving cross country, I’m on the eastern sea board and people are like “well if you just move to New Mexico”. I’m not moving to the desert to make 22 dollars an hour😭.

Anyway apologies for this I’m just going through it at the moment.

I appreciate the existence of this post flair

Post acid reflux flare up nausea and discomfort

Hey everyone I’ve been diagnosed with gerd for a while and I’ve noticed that if I have a bad reflux flare up from some food I’ve eaten, the next couple days I have weird GI issues, like loose stool, bloating, nausea, and other symptoms.

Anyone else get this and is there a way to speed up recovery post flare up? Any good foods to eat or teas to drink? Sometimes it can take days to return to normal.

The joys of recognizing tree species

I know I’m preaching to the choir, but I feel the need to share anyway.

I have always been a hiker and Gardner, and I could always point out an oak or a maple. This winter I bought a couple books on tree identification for my area and wow. I am literally constantly trying to identify trees everywhere I go. I’ve got probably 50-100 species that I’m solid on recognizing, but there are always more to learn!!! Such a fun hobby.

Sauerkraut airlock not bubbling?

So I started this sauerkraut 3 days ago. It’s all fully submerged and I have an airlock with the top screwed down hard. I have yet to see the airlock bubble at all, it does seem like the water level changed in the inner chamber on the first day so I thought it was working but I feel like I should have seen it bubble by now? Could it still be working even if I don’t see it physically bubble? The ferment appears to be going great though, the cooler has changed and the mere are bubbles forming inside the jar so I know it’s fermenting. I’m also not too worried because it’s all submerged in brine anyway. Just a bit confused. This is my first time using an airlock.

Polishing belemnite

This belemnite is made out a beautiful amber stone, I’m trying to polish it up to see its inner shine. I’ve been wet sanding it and it does look much better now but I’m still trying to get it glossy. Anyone know how I could do this with relatively limited tech?

How should I best go about processing this plantain?

I just plucked a bunch of American plantain from my yard and I want to infuse an oil with the leaves. Is it ok if I let the leaves air dry before putting them in the oil? I’m thinking this will help prevent mold

Do I need to use a submersion weight if I’m using an airlock?

I’m looking at a sauerkraut recipe and they recommend to use a glass weight even if I have an airlock. Isn’t that the whole point of having an airlock? To quickly remove the oxygen so submersion isn’t necessary?

Kinda disappointed with bulb development

I cut the scapes off of these about 2.5 weeks ago and only one leaf was dried up but I’m still not very happy with the bulb development I’m seeing. Do you think I’ll get more bulb development if I leave them a few more weeks?

What’s going on with all the herbicide damage?

I’ve seen like ten different posts in the last week of herbicide damage in the garden. Is there a leak or something somewhere lol.

Chipmunks and squirrels

My arch nemesis’.

These guys consistently rob ALL of my berries and fruits, and they have even gone as far as chewing the stems of my tomato plants, killing them. When the weather gets hot they get extra mischievous and go after random plants seemingly just digging them up for no reason.

Are there any repellents that people have found that work for these pests.

I have started sprinkling bone meal around every so often as I’ve heard they dislike it. I also put out a water bowl for them as I’ve heard a large part of the reason the cause so much havoc is due to being thirsty.
