What support do you recommend seeking while still living with BPD mother? (Maybe other than therapy?)

Or even if you can just give me some random tactics/advice that helped you? Thanks.

For background, if you want:

I’m doing yellow-rock method - doesn’t work brilliantly but it’s better than before and most of the time I feel a little more safe.

I tried therapy after a long waiting list, but it started before I realised my mother had BPD (when I still hero worshipped her) and I just can’t open up to them anyway - also most of them veiw my mother as a (albeit slightly overprotective) hero-mum.

Plus, the therapy I do now isn’t talking therapy, it’s a different kind which uses very little communication.

Currently I’m just dependent on my mother - and not even just financially, my mental health is literally fucked and currently I’m so sick I don’t attend school and can’t even leave the house alone without constant panic attacks and endangering my safety.

I feel like I’m in an impossible situation of wanting independence but needing too much support to have it.

What should I do?

Christ I just wish I had a normal family and a half decent childhood.
Sorry that this always turns into a rant - this is the only place online or even irl where I’m honest, appreciate it a lot.

One of the worst days of the year so far.

So far today, at 15:26:
- my mother with BPD overstepped my boundaries by meddling in my friendship with someone who I’m realising might be toxic.
- I tried to ignore it and plan what I was going to do when this toxic friend came round. But I just couldn’t put up with it anymore.
- So I confronted my mother. Stupid idea - I know.
Rather than her usual highly-defensive reaction telling me how I’m being unreasonable and how selfish I am, she went full victim mode, saying she’s so sorry, only human, she tries her best, and so on. Caught me completely off guard, scared the shit out of me, literally dissociated.
- Contacted my father immediately because I thought I was going to faint or something.
- I started having a panic attack (suffer from PTSD and several other illnesses) so when he got home he just held my hand. My mum just lurked. But at this point I started feeling bad for her.
- Much has happened since. She is now storming around the house aggressively cleaning. When anyone engages she snaps at them. Started banging around with the hoover so much my ears are literally ringing.
- And has just stormed in asking us to “do this one thing for her” and help fix the hoover.

Anyways. It sucks.

But I’m so grateful for this subreddit.

It may have saved my life this last week or so of being on it. It has also convinced me to try the yellow rock method from now on, so hopefully things will get calmer.

Have some questions about the grey rock method.

Hiya. 🙃
Teen, live with my BPD mother, want some advice.

Okay, I’m going to be completely honest..
I haven’t done huge amounts of research on the grey rock method - last time I tried to, the whole idea seemed intimidating and like I was going to have to lose my whole personality, it really scared me and made me quickly give up.

I’m gradually reading more about it: keeping responses short, carefully removing myself from tense situations, spending time out of the house, being as uninteresting as possible.

And, I’m trying again, but I am quite reluctant - I have some (rather cluttered and rant-y) questions & would appreciate some advice from people with experience.

I do know I have to make my own decisions but I need some help, because frankly I have no idea what I’m doing, so:

- What are the pros and cons to the grey rock method that aren’t talked about often? Are there any?

- Do I have to use the grey rock method all of the time?
Like can I use it on the bad days and not on good days?
For context: my mother has some episodes when it’s much “better” and some when it’s a lot, lot worse.
While when I’m older I plan on cutting almost all communication unless she takes the initiative to look after herself, right now I don’t want to have to live in a cold and dull household where no one talks to each other.
But then surely it’s selfish to only engage with her on good days? It’s just she can be so nasty and manipulative on bad days?

- Should I suggest it to family members?
For context: my sister (though I may love her to bits), is a ticking time bomb who takes no prisoners. She is aware of mother’s BPD and has received the worst of my mother’s verbal abuse.
Basically, she refuses to put up with it anymore.
But, other than getting stuff off of her chest, I don’t think she does any good with her arguments because it just helps my mother play the victim.
But it does seem like an awful thing to suggest when she’s only standing up for herself.

- Is it not often more exhausting using the grey rock method than not?
For context: I’m figuring out my identity and for once, I’m getting more and more confident about it - and with that confidence I’m feeling brave enough to speak my mind and be who I want to be…
But I feel like if I just try to blend into the background I’ll lose that.
Can that happen?
I just really, really want to be able to defend myself when she says something unreasonable or nasty but using this method I don’t think I will be able to.

Sometimes I’m quite jealous of my sister’s ability to just say what is on her mind, I’ve always looked up to her, always waited until the day I would have the strength to do so too, and now I finally do, I’ve been recommended to use the grey rock method.
It makes me feel like all the anger I have I just need to carry around with me.

Long story short I’m very, very confused, and feel a confusing mix of many, very much contrasting, emotions 😅

I really appreciate any advice.

I said no to almost all of my ocd compulsions today!

I didn’t realise how much ocd controls my life until today, when I didn’t do almost any rituals / compulsions.

It feels incredibly freeing to just not have to do all of the stuff that ocd voice in my head manipulates me into doing. Even if the thoughts are still there and honestly pretty terrifying, my load feels lighter.

I just wanted to remind as many people with ocd as I can that they’re valid, and much, much, much stronger than they think - after all, you’re still here on this subreddit fighting, aren’t you?

OCD sucks, there’s no denying it, and yet we’re all still fighting!

I hope this spreads some joy, even if it’s just a little bit.

(Also, I’m new to talking about my OCD and know very little about the correct terminology and so on, other than what therapists - who do not have OCD - have told me, so feel free to correct any that’s a bit iffy)

Hi

^ cat posing next to the Eiffel Tower, although I had to crop the picture so can’t really see the Eiffel Tower anymore 😅

I realise this is a really big post but..

Could use some help, maybe advice, or just rant.
If you guys want to skip the rant, I have some questions at the very bottom.
Thank you so much to anyone who is reading this.

I’m not raised by borderlines, I’m being raised by a borderline.

It’s exhausting.

My whole childhood I’ve been telling myself it’s probably normal to have a mother like this.
Every time I notice how she was nasty to my sister or me, I dismissed it as something we all do when we’re stressed.
Then, about a year ago, I started realising how awful she was being to me, but even so I just kept telling myself that it’s just me or maybe I’m making it up, because, compared to other people talking about their abusive childhoods, I seem pretty pathetic.
To be honest, I still hop between “I hate my mum, she’s emotionally abusive” to “maybe it’s just in my head or she’s just struggling at the moment”.

Even when I found the term BPD I wasn’t entirely confident that she wasn’t just a normal mum with a lot on her plate.

One day she’d be the victim, snapping at me, randomly ranting at me; listing all the things she had done and all the sacrifices she had made for me that day for me, how my sister or my dad were useless and she was the one carrying the family, how I was being selfish or ungrateful, becoming confrontational over the tinniest of things, guilt tripping me, accusing me of being nasty to her even though I was trying so hard to be kind and not say anything that was on my mind, and, god forbid, if I asked her for help, she would say how she will help because she’s a “good mum”, but doing so require rearranging her entire schedule (just for three second job) and generally trying to make me feel bad.

The next day she’d be fine. A good mum. Knocking on my door, “Hey, you need anything? About to start my work. Have you drank enough today? - I could grab you a drink.”
There’d be the occasional snap, but I mean all parents snap, right?
It was almost scary how nice she’d be, and I would doubt whether she was really being nice, trying to make up for yesterday, or just doing a lot today so she could use at as leverage another tomorrow - which, often, she would.
But, eventually, I’d convince myself yesterday didn’t happen, or yesterday was just a bad day for her.

But then the next day I’d be a victim and she would be the hero.
Reminding me about all the trauma I’ve been through.
About much support I need.
About all my faults.
And it makes me feel weak and like my trauma is the only important thing about me.
Or other times, when I’m aware of what’s she doing, I think that maybe I’m being dramatic about my trauma like she is, and so it isn’t valid.
Then, without me realising, she would quietly go on about how much my pain had hurt her; how much she had done to help me, how she was the hero.
But then the second I voiced on my own that I was in some way a victim, or was sick with a bug, or was feeling anxious and needed support, she’d dismiss me immediately, and casually, secretly, belittle my problems with the most condescending, my-problems-are-bigger-than-yours-and-I’m-smarter-than-you voice.
“You haven’t drank enough, maybe it’s that.” - Im a teenager who has drank 2500ml, I definitely have, but if I say that, even hint at it in the politest way possible, she goes all defensive or on a rant about how I bully her when she’s trying to help.
“You just haven’t eaten enough. you’re just skinny like I was at your age.” - I’ve literally had four meals.
Also, I have OCD and sometimes (not often) that means I’m scared to eat food in case something “bad” happens, in which case, no, I haven’t eaten, but saying that doesn’t really help.
And, her personal favourite: “Have you taken your meds? It’s probably that. Always forgetting. That’s one of the symptoms of not taking your meds. Have you taken your meds?”
It makes me feel like I can’t have emotions without there being something wrong with me.
Like I’m so sick I’ll never be able to dig myself out of this hole.

Finally, after letting the cycle go on everyday for almost a year, I told my father and my sister I thought she had BPD and we needed to work as team, do something about it.
Turns out they’d suspected she’s got BPD for years.
They hadn’t wanted to hurt me apparently.
They had thought it was too big a burden for the youngest kid to know.
My sister seemed to be genuinely sorry for not telling me.
I’m not mad at her.
She’s received the worse of my mother. She’s always been made the villain. I haven’t always been the nicest to her either, because, well I thought she was the villain.
If you compared my experience to hers you would think I had a pretty decent, completely stable mum.
I think she resented me a little for it, but I think now I see my mother’s true colours and experience some of her bad side, she’ll help support me.
My dad briefly apologised for not telling me and then went on some rant about how awful mum was to him.
I’m pissed at him to be honest.
All this time I thought it was in my head and maybe it really wasn’t. And he knew it wasn’t. And he did fuck all about that. He’s the adult. He is the parent. Why hasn’t he tried to get my mum help?! Why hasn’t he tried to make me and my sister’s childhoods less traumatic?
Then when me or my sister tried to open up he’d say that mum was a good person behind it all, that it wasn’t her fault she was sick.
I know my mother is a good person. I know that. She’s sick, I’m mature enough to understand that.
But she is a shit mum sometimes.
And I’m tired of justifying what she does.
No plan has been made to help her or ourselves.
I think everyone is terrified of setting her off and having her storm around the house telling us how selfish we are.
But I don’t want to get annoyed at my dad and sister because they’re all I have.
Unlike them:
I don’t really have any friends.
I’m home educated.

Everyone thinks my mum is the kindest woman alive.

How do I tell them she’s not?
How do I tell her she’s not?
Surely it’s wrong to let her continue being ill?!

I’ve realised other things since discovering the term BPD:

- She has never, in my entire lifetime, truly apologised or taken accountability for her actions. She either demands she’s the victim and it’s easier to just accept the blame, or she says “sorry, but you did this, or I’ve been through this“.

- She constantly switches between: normal & good mum, victim, hero, villain.

- Her nagging at me every second of the day, not letting me for one second forget that time I didn’t remember to unload the dishwasher - despite everyday: making my bed, cleaning my room, making my own meals, doing all my homework, trying to not snap or speak my mind or seem angry. Like I’m literally the most well behaved, obedient, pathetic excuse for a teenager, what do you want from me?

- I can recall her over sharing information about me to others.

- She’s gotten mad at her kids to the point she’s said nasty shit like “would be a shame if we drove into a wall and died” and not seemed remotely sorry or said she’s sorry.

- Once in a while she makes decisions on someone else’s behalf that are completely not hers to make or completely and utterly unfair.

- When she’s upset someone she says shit like “clearly I’m just a terrible person then” instead of what normal, sane people say, such as; “I’m so sorry for being a massive prick to you mate”.

I feel like a dickhead.
My biggest town worries are: maybe it’s all in my head, or maybe I’ll become her one day.

(Also: I know she has BPD, it’s just hard to fully accept that, which is why there’s of “what if it’s not” sort of things in the post.)

Writing all of this down makes me feel stupid. But I think it’s also helped. Never said any of this before.

Anyway. Rant over.

How do I get my mother to seek help or tell her she’s had BPD?

Any advice? Literally anything, idm.

How did you guys cope as kids?

Thank so, so, so much for any replies.
It’s beyond appreciated.

Medication has only cured one of my many symptoms. Could really do with some help.

Im secondary adrenal insufficient rather than Addisons disease, female, relatively young - not sure if any of this is relevant, sorry, new to Reddit and this subreddit especially! 😅

I have almost all of the signs of adrenal crisis all of the time, apart from the most serve - seizures, loss of consciousness, vomiting, diarrhoea. 😕

I’m constantly struggling with: low blood pressure, tiredness, fatigue, dizziness, weakness, I’m always craving water and salty foods even though I eat a healthy diet and hydrate well, have low concentration, I look pale and struggle with feeling shivery even when not cold, often have literally no appetite for days at a time, and at the moment getting very mild but present kidney pain.
The only symptom that has stopped is constant migraines.

I have an appointment with an endocrinologist soon, but I’m not sure what to say. 😓
I feel like I’m constantly dismissed.
Nothing changes after my appointments, despite me explaining how much my symptoms are impacting my life and work.
I think they expect me to say “I need this, this, and this” but I’m not the doctor, I don’t know what I need!
Im just bored of feeling exhausted and can’t find a solution.
I have vaguely looked into something about how females with adrenal insufficiency don’t produce much testosterone and that can cause fatigue and weakness, so I might mention that.

It’s been almost two years since diagnosis (had symptoms for three-four years, took a while to get diagnosed), and they are not even sure what caused my insufficiency, and don’t seem bothered about finding out.
Three months ago, I had what may have been an adrenal crisis and took my injection, went to hospital, they weren’t sure what it was, aren’t bothered about finding out.
Kept me in hospital for a day or two then when symptoms left they were fine to let me go.

I understand this post is incredibly cluttered, so I do apologise.
In all honesty I’m not even sure what I’m hoping to achieve, perhaps just a rant to see if anyone understands.

Does anyone have any advice?
If anyone has experienced the same thing, do you have any suggestions?
Does anyone know what has helped them make doctors listen to them in the past?

Thanks in advanced for literally any reply/replies I receive, it’s so appreciated ❤️
