Fact Check: TH Article on Stu's Home Improvement (Stu Surface)
This business has a horrible reputation in town from former employees to customers who purchased broken appliances. Does the TH fact check before print? If so, what has the non-profit Restoration Works done in Dubuque? Something doesn't smell right in this article:
Excerpt the TH article above written by journalist Thomas Gleason: "Products come from name-brand manufacturers. They are all out-of-the-box new but might have a scratch or dent and be the past year’s model. Surface acquires the products through bankruptcy courts and volume deals.
“We are one of the fastest growing retail centers in the tri-states,” Surface said. “When I started this, I never dreamed it would take off like this.”
Stu’s plans to add locations in the Quad Cities and in Madison, Wis., this year.
Profits from the business are donated to nonprofit Restoration Works, which supports veterans and women and children who were victims of domestic violence.
Stu’s also hires veterans dealing with mental-health challenges and people who recently completed prison sentences.
“My store is built on community,” Surface said. “I want to make sure that I am able to provide services for those that need it the most.”
