Rebecca Cooke - "I do support Iron Dome funding..."

Don't be fooled by the framing of this statement. Yes, the Iron Dome provides protection. It provides protection from retaliation for the human rights atrocities and war crimes Israel commits in the region. The Iron Dome is the shield that emboldens the Netanyahu government.

Funding the Iron Dome is not just complacency, but participation in a genocide.

The full forum can be found here, with the Israel discussion starting at roughly 01:03:00

Recs for home project

ISO handyman/construction company to replace all my interior doors, trim around doors and baseboards in a small home. Struggling to find someone who isn’t flaky/takes a super long time to get projects done once they’ve started.

Bad Vibes at a Quilt Shop

I have been going to a relatively popular quilt shop in town for years but over the past few months the vibe has changed a lot. I thought it was just me for awhile until some friends visited and we went together. Almost as soon as we left they said they felt heavily judged by the employees. One friend said she felt as though the 2 people behind the counter were snickering about her fabric choices. The other said she overheard an employee speaking negatively about a quilt they had for longarming. Not every visit has felt this way, but as of late I have found myself dreading needing something for a project for fear of being judged.

Overall, it's saddening to feel this way of a place I once thought of as my happy place. I hope other people have better experiences.

Locksmith recommendations

Hello, like the title says. I just recently bought a house and would like to change the locks. I need three locks changed and three new keys made.

Does anybody have any recommendations of locksmiths in the Lacrosse, Onalaska, or Holman area? I am looking for great service with a great price. I am also looking for experiences you’ve had with certain companies as well.

Anyone interested in the unusual?

Hello! I am curious if there are people in the La Crosse and surrounding area who are intrigued by the unusual or the weirdosphere of life? Any (non-cult like) groups who gather to discuss what may lie behind "the veil" or history of the unexplainable? I'm not a social media fan. Reddit is my go to for connecting with others who have similar interests, otherwise I generally muse independently. But, in a radical revolution, meeting up with others might be enlightening

Best local bands?

I live near moxie’s and I know this summer they have a lot of live music. Any recs for local bands I should for sure try to see? Or any that aren’t great and not worth my time? I like most genres, but not anything super heavy.

I work in AI and live in La Crosse — AMA

Hey Folks,

My name is Drew and I'm a La Crosse local. Been in the area since 2014 so not a recent transplant... I came for college and decided to stay, but I digress.

Being that rare extroverted nerd, my specialty has always been a balance between technology and communication. My current position has me help leading the internal application of AI and Machine Learning within a major edu-tech organization.

I'm sure that sentence alone probably set off some red flags for some people, and I would not even blame them for it. There are many conceptually terrifying aspects of the technology.

Well why am I posting then? It upsets me that there are really only two camps when it comes to this technology:

  • The AI tech utopia group (AI can do no wrong)
  • The AI doomer club (every part of this technology is toxic)

The reality is AI represents tremendous potential, but its development, utilization, environmental impact, and ethical usage are all real factors that we cannot avoid. On the other hand, I've had personal conversations with the AlphaFold team at Google whose Nobel prize winning work is going to fast track so much when it comes to medical advances moving forward. It has opened up a suite of outlets and tools for those with disabilities, and personally as a neuro-divergent adult it has greatly improved a number of elements in my life.

We live in the real world, between both extremes, and it's people willing to engage in the conversation that will ultimately help decide where we land when it comes to this technology.

I've helped do a few local community talks at area HS and the Public Library on the topic. If anyone has any questions from the good to the bad, from datacenters to medical advances, I can't say I'm an expert at all the things, but I will do my best to answer any questions on the topic as honestly and transparently as I am able.

Credentials: https://www.news8000.com/news/local-news/la-crosse/la-crosse-public-library-event-explores-generative-artificial-intelligence/article_17ced642-f46b-41ca-8788-6ac07e848e82.html

TL;DR: Works in AI. I think the conversation around AI tends to get stuck at the extremes, and I'd love to chat about the nuances. Happy to answer any honest questions about the tech, good or bad and will answer as honestly and transparently as I'm able.

Drug screenings at certain employers

I'm in the market for new employment and I smoke a little pot. Not even recreationally..... mostly just a hit or two at night to help me sleep. Does anyone know if they drug test for Marijuana for support staff (office, kitchen, custodial, residential assistant) at:

Western Tech College

Bethany St Joe

Eagle Crest

Gundersen

I already know they don't at Kwik Trip.

Drug screening

I’m a semi frequent recreational user of THC but have stopped since starting my job search. Despite this, I’m still curious of any local employers that don’t test for hiring

(La Crosse, WI)

Hello, my partner and I recently moved into a duplex and we have several cats, our landlord decided right after us living in the duplex that he wanted to sell the house, including the upper and lower duplex. The landlord has a relator that has stopped by and we communicated that we have animals and to be careful during showings, my partner came home early from work last night and saw that a different relator had been doing a showing and had left the back door wide open, luckily the cats were scared and didn’t try to bolt. I’m curious what our rights are while this is happening to us, I’ve never dealt with this before from a landlord and I don’t know who to speak to about following up with about our animals almost being let out-and if one of my cats were to escape would I be able to file a police report? My partner and I both work full time jobs and we are unable to take off work for every showing they have so far. I just don’t know my options and any advice would be helpful! Thank you.

Creating a friend group

Sometimes it can feel hard to make a friend group that isn’t centered around drinking and partying when on a campus.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m okay with occasionally having alcohol, but I’m usually the type of person who wants to be doing it with a closer group of people while playing drinking games - and not necessarily every single weekend.

I’m just trying to find likeminded people to hang out with consistently. Watching shows, going out to eat, going on walks / maybe getting into hiking, or just chilling in general. I game aswell and if there’s any other women here who do I’d love to become friends. I’m a big FPS player (valorant, CS2, etc)

HMU if you feel similarly or if any of our interests overlap. I’m 22 FYI
