My Mockumentary is playing in Bethel!

Hope this is ok to post, but wanted to alert folks to my indie mockumentary comedy, Canoe Dig It? will be playing at Greenwood Features tomorrow night at 8pm! It’s about the very real sport of Freestyle Canoeing and is very much up the alley of any fan of Best in Show or anything Christopher Guest, but with a lot more painfully dry New England humor. It was entirely shot in Maine and I will be there for a Q&A after the film as well!

Being very much an indie, we don’t really have budget for marketing, so hope getting the word out this way is permissible!

sell me and my roommate on moving here please!!

hi all! i’m looking to relocate back to Wisconsin from kansas next summer, and am heavily considering La Crosse.

me and my roommate are both 24F and alternative, we are hoping to find an area that’s welcoming to all with a great night life and plenty of things to do.

so my questions lead me to - how “safe” is La Crosse? are they pretty good about keeping roads plowed? AND is there a goth/alt scene there at all? how is the job market? and how do YOU like living in La crosse? :))

any advice or suggestions for moving to there would be helpful!!! thank you 🖤

Local Business Student Discounts

I am trying to compile a list for college students of local businesses that offer student discounts. So far I have Larson's General (discounts on refills), Plato's Closet (on certain days), Drift Cycle discount, and free rides with MTU.

Are there other places in the La Crosse area that offer student discounts? Thanks!

Moving to La Crosse and looking to connect with the local fitness/rehab/sports performance community

Hellooo La Crosse!
I’m moving to the area soon and I’m hoping to get a little lay of the land from people who know the local fitness, sports, and healthcare scene.
I’m an endurance and performance coach, and my work sits somewhere between traditional personal training and rehab/performance. I work with endurance athletes, recreational athletes, and also the very-not-athlete population who just wants to stay strong, capable, and active while working a normal 9–5 and dealing with the occasional ache and pain.
Right now, I’m working as an in-house trainer at a chiropractic/rehab practice, where I work alongside the clinical side and provide strength, mobility, and performance coaching. It’s a setup I really enjoy, and as I relocate to La Crosse, I’d love to find something similar.
I’m interested in finding a part-time coaching/training role, contractor arrangement, or collaborative position with a:
• chiropractic or rehab practice
• physical therapy clinic
• sports medicine practice
• performance facility
• endurance/sports training facility
• private training studio
• or another healthcare/wellness setting where strength and movement are part of the bigger picture
I’m also open to working with individual clients independently, so I’m definitely not limiting myself to traditional employment.
I’d particularly love to connect with people who are already working in these spaces, or anyone who knows of a practice/facility within roughly 30minutes of La Crosse that might be a good fit. I know there are some great communities and facilities north of La Crosse as well, but I’m still learning the area.
If you work in PT, chiropractic, sports medicine, strength & conditioning, endurance sports, or a related field—or you know someone I should talk to—I’d genuinely love to hear from you.
I’m less interested in another big-box gym and much more interested in finding the people doing thoughtful, community-oriented work around performance, longevity, movement, and keeping people active.
Thanks in advance!

Good Bars to watch Soccer

Anyone have any recommendations to catch the Premier League kick off Saturday? Thinking of trying to hit up a spot at 9am, not sure what the best option would be.

Garage/storage sale

I’m selling a couple things for my grandma. I listed a couple things on marketplace but figured I’d try to get more interaction on here. I have an office desk to sell that’s in very good condition and it’s pretty big. I also have plenty of Christmas ornaments if anyone’s interested. Last couple things are 2 salon chairs, a bin of old salon equipment, and like 8 traffic cones from her business. Not really any set prices nor do I know the market for any of it. Lmk if you’re interested or know anyone who might be!

Surveillance

Why are more people not talking about the amount of Flock cameras that have gone up? Who approved these? Who is paying for these? Who can access this information? Flock is a private company, they don’t care about safety, they care about profits.

23 and just moved here, where do people hang out?

Hi, I just moved to this town. I’m 23 and don’t know anyone here. I work pretty far away, but I’m relatively social and extroverted, so I don’t really have a problem starting conversations or making friends.

The problem is that since I work and don’t know anyone here yet, I don’t really have people to go with to bars or other places where people usually go in groups. I’m not sure where to start.

Can anyone recommend any activities or hobbies where I could meet people around my age and go by myself without feeling out of place? If anyone has been in a similar situation, I’d love to hear what worked for you.

Dronification

Thursday, the La Crosse PD is hosting a demo of Skydio surveillance drones for the mayor, city council, and others. Skydio drones were used by the IDF in Gaza (see https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20251103-drones-tested-in-genocide-and-refined-on-palestinians-are-swarming-american-cities/). You can email the Mayor and use this online form for the council: https://cityforms.cityoflacrosse.org/Forms/ContactCityCouncil with your opinion. This is just a demonstration noticed as a public meeting because there will probably be a council quorum there.

Arcadia school kids need support

UPDATE: Thank you to the donors and to those who are giving the requests a boost! Please keep sharing. Arcadia is a histically underfunded school district. And as a member of this community, these people work very hard to give their children a better life. Many work on the surrounding farms, at food processing facilities, at Ashley furniture, and in labor. They are hardworking people who take great pride in their community and their children's education. It is such a privilege to live here.

Thank you for your support.

ORIGINAL POST:

I don't know if many of you are aware that across the river, just East of Winona, is a small community with a lot of very talented kids. Many of them are bilingual and their parents work very hard to give them a good life.

I am providing a link to one classroom project that I believe can be reached by this community. You can use the link to find other classrooms who are also relying on donations to help students with the things they need.

You may not know this, but ICE came down here many times this summer. And they sat in their unmarked black SUVs outside the apartments in Arcadia. This was a very stressful summer for many families here. I hope that the surrounding communities will show the residents of Arcadia that they are not alone. One way to do that is to contribute to the donation lists their classrooms have made.

Van Orden using House Funds for Campaign

If you look in the top left, "Paid for by official funds authorized by the House of Representatives". Is this legal? He's using tax dollars for campaign materials. Talk about waste.

Owner of the rustic went on a little homophobic rant at me the other night

I had such a strange experience the other night, I’m at a friend at the rustic and we were chatting with the bartender and other people at the bar for a while. A very loud drunk guy came in from outside and started chatting with my (girl) friend I was with, I was chatting with someone else with my back to the guy and my friend. I wasn’t paying attention to them, but I did overhear when the guy said “let’s ditch these faggots” which was super strange to say to the friend of a gay person lol?? But I turned around and I think I just made a face at my friend, but I don’t really recall, I think the guy tried to justify what he said but I wasn’t really giving him any attention. My friend goes to the bathroom and he keeps talking to me saying how he doesn’t get why I talk the way I do. He did not like my gay voice and also started going in on my hand gestures and the flamboyant way I move when I talk. Shit, I know I don’t hide that I’m gay, but it’s never been an issue before lol, I make friends wherever I go so that was weird! He didn’t even know me or chat directly with me up until that point! Well, it turns out he’s the owner of the bar, and I found out later he’s the same owner from when it was Dublin, the restaurant that closed when its staff all walked out due to poor treatment from the owners (that’s what I heard at least). I just wanted to share because other gay people and gay allys should really avoid that place. I wouldn’t want anyone else to be criticized for how they speak or their mannerisms or for just existing as a gay person. Very odd experience, the bartenders I’ve met there were friendly and cool though, but I do wish anyone would’ve spoken up for me or stopped him in the moment. He did that infront of the entire bar, and he was pretty drunk with no volume control. Thankfully I don’t experience homophobia like that often downtown as the usually younger generations are very friendly and accepting, this guy was older (40?) so he probably just hangs on to what was acceptable in the past. Anyone else have a bad experience like that at Dublin or the rustic with that owner?

Karuna Inc. is winding down

How can we let this place fail? It's a model that works and they take the people places like CouleeCap and the Salvation Army can't or won't deal with. We have money for bullshit, but not for this?? C'mon.

Sometimes, it seems like these nonprofits fight over the funding crumbs rather than work together. But, hey, like, that's just, like, my opinion, man.

Lunch Suggestions

Hi! My family will be visiting La Crosse end of August. We have a toddler so planning ahead is important. I've found amazing breakfast and dinner spots via posts on here and elsewhere but need recommendations for quick, light lunch spots. Bonus if they're suitable for grabbing to-go and taking to a nearby park/playground.

A Thank You from Emily Berge

It has been a journey for the last 18 months. I knew this would be an uphill battle and I was committed to running a campaign that was built from the ground up, focused on the people of Wisconsin.

We were up against the National Dem Establishment and millions of dollars. I have to say I wasn't expecting the national dems to be my biggest opponent but I guess that is politics. We were up against almost 7 million dollars spent in this primary plus outside spending. We were up against early national endorsements. We were up against negative text messages from my opponent that spread misinformation about me and my family.

AND YET we still built something amazing. Over 800 people signed up to volunteer, so many new voters got engaged, over 200 events throughout the district. Collected 1400 signatures in 5 days to be first on the ballot. This campaign gave people hope...people told me that all the time. And we need hope to create change.

Thank you to all my volunteers, supporters, voters, people who donated. What we did mattered. The energy we felt was real.

Congratulations to Rebecca Cooke for winning the primary. I am going to take time to be with my family for the next few weeks and maybe longer. My daughter is heading off to college this fall and I look forward to spending time with her. I will also need to figure out how to rebuild my life after this experience. I have a lot to process that I haven't had time to process: finishing up 8 years on council, a pending empty nest for Mike and me, losing one of our cats (Marie), figuring out my counseling practice and I'm sure other things too.

But I will be around Eau Claire and I hope to see you all out and about. I am not giving up on you all. I care too much. I have your back, Wisconsin.

Love you all.
