Long-time HO collector making the jump to O gauge. I understand it now

Long-time lurker here. I’ve been an HO collector for some time, but every Christmas, I always felt like something was missing from my holiday villages. This past Christmas, I decided to bite the bullet and bought the Santa Fe Super Chief set… My very first O gauge set, and my first Lionel set ever.

My first impressions? I was completely blown away. I immediately understood what all the hype was about with Lionel. It’s just pure fun, freeing you from the stress of hyper-prototypical nitpicking.

After getting the Super Chief set, I realized that Fastrack was a bit too noisy for my space, so I ended up switching and grabbing a bunch of tubular track from Menards.

Honestly, Menards deserves a massive shoutout. They have completely revolutionized how accessible and affordable the O gauge world can be. Between their budget-friendly, high-quality tubular track and their incredible lineup of rolling stock, Menards makes building a layout actually achievable without breaking the bank. Their value-to-quality ratio is genuinely unmatched in the hobby right now, and they are really helping keep the fun alive.

Since catching the O gauge bug, my collection has grown quite a bit:

- Picked up the CPKC maxi stack set

- Added a CN Lionchief locomotive (#2645060)

- Snagged a New York Central FT Bluetooth locomotive (#2334100)

Collected a whole fleet of Menards smooth-sided hoppers for my freight operations, alongside various other Menards cars

At this point, I’m seriously considering packing up all my HO scale gear into boxes and diving headfirst into a dedicated O gauge layout.

Menards has made this venture so appealing, and I’m just so appreciative of their rolling stock and their dedication to making high-quality O gauge products at a reasonable price.

I am totally obsessed with O gauge now. I completely understand why people are still so passionate about this scale. Safe to say I have probably spent thousands this year so far. and I regret absolutely nothing!

Blanket Statement from DEC on Birth Certificates prior to 1926?

Do we know if there is a newer blanket statement from Directeur L’état civil on the issuance of birth certificates before 1926?

Sort of like Libraries and Archives Canada’s recent blanket statement that can be cited in a cover letter

Based on the other post here today, it sounds like IRCC is requesting birth certificates even if an ancestor was born well before the issuance of them existed (so bizarre!). I think we also know of somebody a few weeks ago that was requested a Quebec birth certificate for their ancestors 1878 birth when they even had a certified BANQ baptismal record. So obviously this seems to be a new hiccup coming soon as we all know DEC will not issue a birth certificate that early without a lawyer, and even then — good luck

Trying to think of a way to be proactive about this without having to submit a request to DEC for it…

Or maybe it’s just going to have to take DEC getting inundated with these requests to issue a blanket statement on it😂

What was the purpose of the Bjorkquist lawsuits and Bill C3 legislation, and could this actually correlate to IRCC setting a 1867 cutoff?

Like many I am feeling nervous about this possible looming 1867 confederation date cutoff and reading threads here and on Facebook. I feel so much about this process has been unclear from the start...

Where I’m feeling confused is I have seen people in these threads write how the “purpose of C3” was primarily for Gen2 families from Bjorkquist lawsuit who were 20th century families affected by discriminatory legislation. I looked into it a little and it seems plausible, but I’ve been under the impression that this legislation was to correct ALL historical wrongs in Canada. Not just 20th century ones? Can anyone shed any light on this?

So my next question is, if this is true. Could this be why IRCC could be seeking out a way to cap this process at confederation in 1867?

Couldn't we make an argument that 1867 limit makes more Lost Canadians?
