Are there any Prototyping or Additive Manufacturing Technicians willing to share their career insights?
Hi everyone,
I am 19 years old and currently planning my career path. I am deeply interested in becoming a Prototyping / Additive Manufacturing Technician (Industrial 3D Printing).
In high school, I specialized in Digital and Information Systems in France. Although I didn't graduate with the final diploma, I gained a solid foundation there. I also have some hands-on experience using Ultimaker printers and laser cutters, which I really enjoyed.
I am a calm and somewhat introverted person, which is why I was drawn to this field. I love the idea of working in a quiet R&D lab or design office setting on unique parts, rather than mass production. Long-term, I would love to work abroad, though it's not an immediate priority.
To be completely honest, I am still hesitant to jump in because I struggle with self-doubt and a lack of confidence:. As a woman, I’m worried that this industry might be too male-dominated, and that it might affect my chances of being hired or well-integrated into a team. I'm also scared that I might not be smart enough to understand the complex settings of industrial machines and that I'll end up wasting my time in a training program that is too difficult for me.
If any of you work in this field or in R&D/design offices, could you please shed some light on these questions?
- What does your day-to-day look like (time spent on software vs. operating machines)? Could you give me more details about your tasks and break any misconceptions I might have?
- What do you actually need to know and master to succeed? Do you need complex math, or is it mostly visual logic and problem-solving?
- Is this field high in demand, or is the market saturated for juniors?
- Is this a good job for someone quiet who likes to work "in their own bubble"? Do you need to be a mechanical or IT "genius" to get by?
- Are these skills easily transferable if I want to move and work in another country later on?
- What is the reality for women in your teams? Is it easy to find our place?
Thank you so much for your help, your feedback, and your honesty!
