Moving to Slovenia without knowing slovenian.

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are seriously planning to relocate from Hungary to Slovenia (or the surrounding area) in the near future with our little “zoo” — one dog and two cats.

I’m a BS Mechatronics Engineer with an MSc in Informatics/Computer Engineering. My wife is an experienced accountant from Hungary who works home office, she wants to keep her job she earns around 1200 euro net/ month. We’re both EU citizens, which makes the move administratively easier, but we still have many questions.

A few key things we’d love advice on. How important is the language really is? Especially for engineering/IT jobs and for daily life (doctors, authorities, shopping, etc.). What level should we realistically aim for (A2, B1, B2)? I see very mixed opinions online — some say English is enough in tech companies, others say basic slovenian is necessary outside international firms. What can a mechatronics or software/informatics engineer with a couple of years of experience realistically earn (gross or net)? I’ve seen very different numbers online and would love recent experiences from people in similar fields.
Any other important things we should know? Pet import/moving rules (vaccinations, microchip, etc.), best neighbourhoods for a young couple with pets, cost of living comparison vs Budapest, healthcare, accountant job opportunities for my wife, etc.

We love Slovenia's vibe, nature nearby. Any tips, warnings, or personal stories from people who made a similar move would be greatly appreciated!

P.S:
We are want to move because of the lack of healthcare and very bad education and retirement is almost not possible if you don't put a bunch of money away in hungary, sadly we can't really imagine our life in Hungary until we are elder....

Thank you in advance!

Moving without knowing czech.

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are seriously planning to relocate from Hungary to Brno (or the surrounding area) in the near future with our little “zoo” — one dog and two cats.

I’m a BS Mechatronics Engineer with an MSc in Informatics/Computer Engineering and a few years of professional experience. My wife is an experienced accountant from Hungary who works home office, she wants to keep her job she earns around 27 000 CZK/ month. We’re both EU citizens, which makes the move administratively easier, but we still have many questions.

We love Brno’s vibe, nature nearby, and it’s not as overwhelming as Prague. Any tips, warnings, or personal stories from people who made a similar move (especially from Hungary or with pets) would be greatly appreciated!
