How far into a book do you guys think it’s okay for the book cover to “spoil” the story?

I’ve started to become annoyed when books spoil the book in an attempt to sell the book. It feels just like a bad movie trailer.

For example, in Fairy Tale by Stephen King, you have to read around 180 pages (30%) before you even “catch up” to the premise described on the back of the book.

Another example is Mungo by Douglas Stuart, where, to me, the front cover completely ruins part of the reading experience. Instead of experiencing the buildup of Is he gay?, I found myself thinking, When are you guys going to kiss already?

At what point does a book cover cross the line from intriguing you into reading the book to actually telling you too much?

What do you think Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes sold that was never mentioned in the books?

We know about things like Skiving Snackboxes, Extendable Ears, Decoy Detonators, and Portable Swamps, but surely that wasn't the entire catalogue.

I've always imagined they had an footwear collection.

Sneakers – Enchanted trainers that let you move in complete silence. No creaking floorboards, no echoing footsteps, no noise while sprinting down a corridor. Perfect for sneaking around Hogwarts... or escaping Filch.

Tracers – Shoes enchanted to erase your footprints as you walk. Snow, mud, sand, dust. It doesn't matter. By the time you've taken your next step, there's no sign you were ever there.

What other products do you think Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes sold that we never got to see?

A thought about the betting in The Long Walk

I've been thinking about The Long Walk and have an idea I can't get out of my head.

What if one of the walkers was told by his family that they had bet everything they had on him? Not on him winning, but on exactly when he was going to die.

It would create a brutal dilemma. If he keeps walking, he may save himself at the expense of his family's future. If he gives up, he is accepting his own execution.

The moments when he sees his family among the spectators would become so much darker. He would have to watch them as he gets closer and closer to the point where they expect him to fall. And if he keeps walking past that point, what happens then?

What do you all think?
