Obscure Chapters: Crimson Guard

The Crimson Guard are from an unknown founding and origin. The Guard have little to no lore outside of two things. The first is that they share a name with an order of elite military force created by the Adeptus Mechanicus of the Calixis Sector. The second is that they were possible one of the chapters that fell to the murder curse, when Angron destroyed an archeotech beacon.

I like the idea they are Crimson Fists successors, idk, I think they'd be cool. Perhaps they could have a close relationship with the Mechanicus. Their homeworld could be near Calixis Sector, or they are fleet based and they just pal around the sector. They maybe more Dreadnaught focused rather than tanks and their Tech Marines and keep their normal colors.

Obscure Chapters: Astral Fists

The Astral Fists are from an unknown founding and origin. Their only piece of information on them is that in M42 they are moving to combat Hive Fleet Echidna. Pictured above is the hive organism classified as The Echinda bioform.

These guys could be one of the foremost Tyranid hunters. They could specialize in hunter the big bugs, like Carnifexs, with their tank formations. They probably are Imperial Fists, but I like Crimson Fists more because their relationship with xenos. Their homeworld, let's call it Wyverus, could be home to megafanua like Tyranids, and an initiate or group of, has to hunt a large creature.

Obscure Chapters: Venerators of Osiron

The Venerators of Osiron are from an unknown founding (post 2nd founding) and origin. They have no lore outside of being one of the chapters to be contacted by Balthazar van Heppel to write a report about space marine's religious beliefs. They also share much of their logo with the Masters of Protelus.

I can see them getting their name from their first chapter master. Perhaps before the chapter was formed Osiron performed such an impressive act that he was given the liberty of his own chapter. The fact that they were one of the chapters contacted by an Ecclesiarchal agent helps flesh them out, as they could view the Emperor as a god, like the Fire Angels. I also like the idea they specialize in Heavy gear, like Gravis and Terminator plate. Parent chapter could be Ultramarines or Imperial Fist, but I like Iron Hands.

Obscure Chapters: Watchguard

The Watchguard are from an unknown founding and origin. Their only known bit of information on them was that they sent 6 companies to the defense of Cadia. It's unknown whether those companies were wiped out or some Marines escaped.

For these guys I can see them as more backhanded in their duties. Use their scout company as agents to survey their system, and when things got bad thats when the actual Space Marines get involved. I imagine that the companies sent to Cadia were wiped out, but the Chapter were reinforced with Primaris fairly quickly, so around half of their companies are still firstborn. They also could have adopted the phobos armor into their arsenal fairly quick.

Obscure Chapters: Emperor's Hawks

The Emperor's Hawks are a from an unknown founding and origin. Little is known about them except their unique heraldry. They put their chapter logo on both shoulders, rather than just one, and they moved their squad, role, and company markings to their knees. Also the trim isn't gold its yellow.

I like to think they are IF successors, as they seem more generic then some other chapters. They have a love of Beaky helmets, and who would have guess they specialize in jump-pack warfare (they actually do). I can also see them as ork hunters as their only piece of art is them versus orks. Perhaps they have a friendly rivalry with the Imperial Hawks, another jump-pack chapter. A somewhat generic chapter, but thats not always bad.

Obscure Chapters: Hound Skulls

The Hound Skulls are from an unknown founding and origin. Their only documented conflict was The Siege of Infamy (Little is known about it). In it a force of Skulls fought back Blood Axes taking heavy causalties, on the planet of Ennibor.

I believe that the Skulls were wiped out at some point and were refounded. Perhaps their gene-seed was unknown, but in the primaris Chapter is of the Angron's stock. Favoring drop-pod assualts these warriors are very much dregs to their cousins, for their pure brutality. Though the primaris chapter is a bit more resistant they too have shown signs of deterioration. Also I like the idea the orks were getting besieged by the first-born Chapter.

Obscure Chapters: Shifting Sands

The Shifting Sands are from an unknown founding and origin. They have a goofy looking color schemes and logos. The logo itself is just a palm tree, just a tree no funny business. Though their Librarians still use the regular colors rather than the traditional blue of the librarius. They were created by Daniel Boone, an ex-GW employee as an example for N. Europe WD's Chapter Master Competition and was featured in WD 298 (UK)

I can see them as an extreme environment specialists, specifically desert world warfare. Making use of their librarians for obscuration to cloak their advance. Their homeworld could be a paradise world that looks like the Caribbean, but they get their recruits from a neighboring planet.

Obscure Chapters: Crimson Minotaurs

The Crimson Minotaurs are from an unknown founding and origin. They fought in two conflicts the first was the Dark Crusade (no not the video game) in which the Imperium fought against Eldar, Orks, and Tau. They fought in the Kith crusade under Castellan Ardor (No BT relation). The other was the Nimbosa Crusade were they and others fought aganist the Tau during 2nd spere of expansion. The chapter was created by the staff of a store in Philadelphia, PA. (best US state)

I see them as a well rounded force with no particular focus. However they probably focus on xenos incursions, specifically high-tech ones. Yeah I don't really have anything else to say; I just think they are on of those generic all rounders. I have though found a guy painting/painted a force of these guys whether they are these or homebrewed is a different story. https://www.instagram.com/hiisistudios

Obscure Chapters: Iron Crusaders

The Iron Crusaders are from an unknown founding and origin. The Crusaders have last been seen taking their entire fleet-based Chapter into the Ghoul Stars. It's unknown if they are still alive.

At this point they probably function like the Ashen Claws. Cut of from supplies they have to bargain with the Carcharodons and hunt down chaos warbands for their boached war gear. They probably are more zealous version of Carcharodons.

Obscure Chapters: Blood Tigers

The Blood Tigers are from an extremely early founding and unknown origin (probably BA). Their only known conflict was in 899.M34, which I could best describe as "The Defiler War". In which they defended their homeworld of Tryjon II against a combined force of the Black Legion and Tormented warbands. The Spearhead of the heretics was 20 defilers including Me'Kallar the Insane. The enemy forces were only defeated after the chapter deployed their entire force of Dreadnaughts to kill all the Deffies, including Me'Kallar. Its unknown if the chapter is still alive.

I think in the intervening Millennia they have developed a preference for Armored Warfare, As infantry wasn't doing to much. They hate Chaos Space Marines for this and have at times abandoned allies to hunt them. They also have developed a deep reverence for their Dreadnaughts and prevent them from going into battle. So in summary, they are like a mix of Blood Angels and Red Talons.

Obscure Chapters: Storm Wings

The Storm Wings are a Raven Guard successor from an unknown founding. There is a bit of discrepancy in their color scheme, they are described as grey and red, but some show a more bone color. Their homeworld is called Eyrie, located in the Segmentium Solar.

Their only documented conflict was in 680.M41. The Storm Wings encountered the Tiger Claws vessel, Bakasurra, after being lost in the warp since 280.M40. The Wings aided the Claws against Drukhari raiders. They resupplied the Claws and sent them on their way.

The Storm Wings believe in embracing one's failure as a symbol of strength. This belief is in the form of a chain with each link is in the shape of interlocking talons. The chain serves as a record of failures. The talons are designed to bite into the neck skin so that no battle-brother will forget the chapter's failures.

I like them, they cool.

Obscure Chapters: Imperial Scars

The Imperial Scars are from an unknown founding and origin. The chapter was created by Jurgen Bax, a former GW employee. The chapter was an example for N. Europe WD's Chapter Master Competition and was featured in White Dwarf 298 (UK). In my humble opinion they visually look like diet Storm Lords.

The name is very indicative of WS, however that's boring and I think they are RG or BA, as a Scar being outside of meaning a healed wound, means a steep cliff made out of limestone. I think they use jump packs to help move around these cliffs on their Homeworld. Plus if BA successor then 'scar' could be symbolic of the red thirst / black rage.

Obscure Chapters: Emperor’s Storm

The Emperor's Storm are from an unknown founding and origin. In How to Paint Space Marines and the WWM, the Chapter, created by 2002 Golden Demon winner Joe Hill, wore Power Armors that combined white, maroon and checkered plates, and took details from the Redmptionists. But on other appearances they are depicted in the gold and white scheme. I personally prefer the gold one because it's easier than Hill's one.

With a name like Storm I can see them utilizing jump-packs and bikes. Or they have a nack for airial dogfights essentially space marine air force. RG is possible, but I do see either UM of IF.

Obscure Chapters: Red Scimitars

The Red Scimitars are from an unknown founding and origin chapter. They are described as red/crimson and black. In a clash with Chaos Space Marines, after a failure of the rites of teleportation aboard their Battle Barge, a full squad of Red Scimitars veterans were torn apart by the warp, their remains painted on the walls. Even so, the rest of the Space Marines of the Strike Force Ultra, successfully dealt with the Black Legion force. Sometime between M34-M37, the Chapter engaged in anti-Ork operations at the borders of the Maelstrom. They managed to corner a large Ork fleet, but their attack was disrupted by the sudden appearance of Fabius Bile. One contingent of Red Scimitars attempted to board the vessel, but were killed by Fabius' followers. In 913.998.M41, the 4th and 5th companies engaged the Angels of Pain warband as they raided the Trantation Station. After a running battle, the Red Scimitars defeated the renegades and forced a retreat, but not before the Angels vindictively bombarded the planet with world-ending missiles that rendered it uninhabitable for centuries.

After a new recruit is gifted with his war gear, he begins to write a poem upon the chestplate of his armor, adding details with every following victory and deed. Though the Red Scimitars is red, some older suits are covered in so much scripts that they appeared, crimson or black from a distance. When a Scimitar dies, the power armor is passed to his successor, he is inspired by the victories of old, adding his own deeds to the Chapter's history. In the chapter, they use terms like "king" and Shehan for Captains. Pic of an Unadorned Scimitar, company denoted by aquilia.

I like these guys as heretic hunters for-most, as all of their conflicts have something to do with renegades and heretics. They might have a Irish ascetic, whatever that is. I think they despise the Harbingers chapter, as Shehan is Irish in origin and the Harbingers are British. OR they could have an Arabian look as a Scimitar was a sword commonly used in the Middle-East.

Obscure Chapters: Jade Paladins

The Jade Paladins were created by Ben Bailey, a GW WarCom employee, and were showcased in 12th episode of The WarCom Podcast. They technically have a color scheme just no art. They are metallic jade, with white trim on shoulder pads and white right knee pad and completely white for vehicles. Their icon is an encircled white fist placed on a jade colored field.

The Jade Paladins are from an unknown founding (pretty much refounded in the Ultima Founding) and are a Primaris IF successor. The Jade Paladins' early history is lost to them, though their myths and legends state they are descended from the IF, their Primaris are IF. In M42 they attacked a BL Warband, causing them to attack their Homeworld, the warband was defeated after the Chaos Lord was killed. The Jade Paladins' Homeworld of Praelax, is a Death World with giant Mega Geckos; their Fortress Monastery is the only thing there. A Company of Jade Paladins, called the Prolaxian Guard are stationed there at all times, unless something bad happens. THey specalize in Seige Warfare with Bolter weapons

The Chapter recruits from various worlds. Aspirants from the same world are placed together in groups called Brethren and assigned a digit number and letter code, like BO06. These groups are designed to increase bonds of Brotherhood with each other. A Captain can command several Brethren groups if need be. A chapter tradition is for a group of recently Brethren go out and hunt a Mega Geckos on Praelax. Those that kill one will receive the respect of their Chapter, more should they be able to tame one. Those Brethren who tame a Mega Gecko, are usually the first in line to join the Prolaxian Guard

When the Chapter is asked to send men to the Death Watch, they send entire Brethren groups. The Chief Librarian has briefly joined the Death Watch before returning. The Paladins do not trust psykers. This includes myths and legends which claim that Praelax's downfall was caused by sorcery. Those Paladins who develop abilities are removed from their Brethren, and sent to the Chapter's Fortress Monastery, where they undergo tests. Should they fail even slightly, the Chapter will kill them, while those who survive become a Librarian. Their former Brethren aren't told what happened and assume they died unless the Chapter decides tell the truth. The Jade Paladins only have two Librarians, one of which is the Chief Librarian and is an honorary member of the Prolaxian Guard. If a Paladin survives as the only member Brethren group, they enter a berserk state and will be driven by revenge. Their self-preservation drops as they fight, but those who survive this state go join the Chapter's command structure. Bar the Chapter Master and his Honor Guard, the Paladins' command structure is composed of such Paladins, who are greatly respected. These include the Reclusiam as well, as Paladins who mourns the loss of their Brethren usually go on to be Chaplains.

First time at Homebrew: The Emperor's Tyrants

I used White Dwarf 515’s chapter generator with liberties

  • Imperial Fists
  • Hive World - Prison World
    • Trades prisoners with Mechanicus for resources.

  • Aggressive Tactics
  • Extreme Environment Specialists
  • Intolerant or Fanatical
  • Vendetta - Chaos Warbands

Why They Were Created

The Emperor’s Tyrants are Imperial Fists successors formed in the 13th Founding, that exist off the books of the Adeptus Terra in every way that matters, except for 3 groups. The High Lords, the Inquisition, and the Adeptus Arbites. The last one is notable because the Grand Provost Marshal at the time had personally called for their creation. The Marshal had wanted them created because he believed that no normal garrison could manage one of the largest Prison / Penal worlds in the Imperium. He nearly didn’t get his chapter, but he had managed to convince a majority and the Tyrants were made. The Grand Provost Marshal chose Imperial Fist because of their stability and notable excellence in dealing with high maintenance locations.

Alchizer Primus or "The Coffin"

The Tyrants guard a world in Administratum records as Alchizer Primus, however no one on the planet calls it that. Though it's considered a hive world repurposed as a prison world, its nickname, “the Coffin” is used without exception by staff, prisoners, and the Tyrants themselves. The name isn’t ironic, those who are stuck there do not leave. Prisoner’s sentences aren’t based on severity and there is no parole, no repeal process, only the liberty to work till their death. The lower hives were gutted and replaced by an administrative zone, which were ran by a skeleton crew of Adeptus Arbites, chapter serfs, and Mechanicus adepts. The Tyrants are there for riots to get out of control, mass breakouts, and raids from chaos warbands.

The Mechanicus of the neighboring system and the Tyrants have formed a genuine, working relation. Any chapter or group who had the pleasure of encountering the Tyrants have said they are ‘utterly intolerant of visitors, specifically any religious groups’, like their passing cousins of the Black Templars. However, they are much more civil with the Mechanicus, because they still supply the chapter with resources and their payment is prisoners who are used in labor or servitorized.

Doctrine & Organization

The Tyrants are masters in extreme warfare. The tiny corridors of the prison are very dubious in their construction which means there are regular gas leaks, actively crumbling portions of the prison, and other signs of failing infrastructure. More aggressive tactics are used in case the inner structure was breached, like breaching shields and close ranged oriented wargear.

The Vendetta

The Tyrants have a complete and utter hatred of the warbands of the Eye and now Great Rift. The reason for these attacks on Alchizer Primus is pretty easy: these warbands are always lacking in man-power. Whether it is due to a failed strike or internecine conflicts. Warbands regularly attack normal hive worlds, so a prison world housing heretics, hereteks, and revolt leaders, just seems like the best a warband can hope for. However, when they arrive they are disappointed to find a chapter defending it, they’ll still attack it, and ultimately perish. The chapter has had to fend thousands of these attacks off. The most devastating attack in recent years occurred in 002.M42, when a combined force of 4 minor warbands (The Tainted, Angels of Ectasty, The Harvest, and Blades of Magnus) raided the world, but were fended off at the cost of around 2.5 companies. A torchbearer fleet had been dispatched by Gulliman at the request of the new Grand Provost Marshal after Aveliza Drachmar was dispatched, and the chapter had received Primaris tech.

Obscure Chapters: Angels Vindicant

The Angels Vindicant are from an unknown founding and origin chapter. Their chapter was present at Honour's End, an event occurring during a campaign on Lucid Prime. They fought alongside the Space Wolves and Flesh Tearers, scouring CSM from the hive city of Ratspire; however, the ferocity of the Flesh Tearers' tactics led to open combat between the two.

The Angels Vindicant could be a Chapter built around the limits of righteous violence and believe that even the enemies of the Imperium must be punished properly. Could be DA or UM. Company is denoted by trim and aquila.

Obscure Chapters: Knights of Mhorwen

The Knights of Mhorwen are from an unknown founding (before the Ultima) and unknown primogenitor. During the Indomitus Crusade, their Torchbearers Fleet, arrived to give them Primaris. Before that the Fleet had trouble finding the Chapter and descended a ruined Forge World, which they believed had dealings with the Knights. A small force was sent to the world and found the information was in the data-core of the Archivolt Quranos Forge Temple. Upon entering, however, the Torchbearers were attacked by corrupted Admech constructs. It was revealed that the ruined Forge World had been infected by Scrap Codes, which caused the Archivolt to create abominations. The Torchbearers suffered heavy losses before they reached the data-core and escaped with the chapter's location.

The Knights are cool in my opinion, because you don't see a lot of chapters fighting Dark Mech. The only one I can think of is the Celestial Guard. I can see IF, because of how generic, their gene-seed seems. Mhorwen, the planet, could be perpetually stormy and mountainous, feudal world. The aqulia is company color. Art by Dmitry Brushray.

Obscure Chapters: Valiant Blades

The Valiant Blades are from the Ultima Founding and an unknown parent chapter. Sometime after their creation, the Chapter received a plea for aid from House Hawkshroud. The message said that the Knights' home of Krastellan was being invaded by the Orks and they needed to call upon the debts owed to them. Though the Chapter didn't owed a debt, the Blades turned towards Krastellan to aid the Knight House. Its unknown if they will arrive in time.

I like to imagine they made it in time to help House Hawkshroud and they took the yellow as a memento of their first real endeavor, and they could use the Ravenwing's icon as a mix of their name and the Hawkshroud icon. UM heritage is likely, but DA, IF, or BA could be possible. Could have a Bretonnian aesthetic with a focus on mechanized warfare.
