what sci-fi concept still feels impossible even after reading a lot of sci-fi?

the more science fiction i read, the more i realize that some ideas eventually stop feeling strange. ai, virtual reality, genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, generation ships, even some forms of space travel all start to feel almost familiar after enough books.

but there are still concepts that completely break my brain

for me, it’s stories where consciousness or identity can be copied, transferred or split between multiple versions of the same person. i understand the basic idea, but the philosophical consequences get weird very quickly

Measuring headphones with a DIY coupler – worth the hassle or just use someone else's data?

Been collecting headphones for a few years and recently started getting more serious about actually understanding what I'm hearing instead of just vibing with it. The obvious next step is measurement, but the whole coupler situation is a mess. A proper GRAS or IEC711 clone setup costs more than most of my headphones. There are DIY coupler builds floating around using 3D printed parts and cheap measurement mics, and I genuinely cannot tell if the results are useful or just noise with extra steps.

What gets me is how much variation exists even between legitimate professional rigs. Look at the same headphone measured on Rtings versus Oratory versus someone's personal rig and the treble region is all over the place. So if professional setups disagree that much, what is a cheap DIY coupler actually telling you that a frequency response graph from a trusted source isn't?

My actual goal is crossfeed and EQ correction work, getting closer to a target curve for a few specific cans. For that use case, I'm not sure if relative measurements on a consistent but imperfect rig are more valuable than absolute measurements I didn't take myself.

Has anyone built a coupler and actually found it changed how they approach EQ, or does it mostly end with you just trusting published data anyway?

Do you think generation ships are inherently a pessimistic premise, or just a neutral setup that gets used pessimistically?

Noticed most generation ship stories default to something going wrong - societal collapse, forgotten purpose, a caste system forming, the ship itself becoming a kind of prison across generations. Rarely see one where the premise plays out closer to functional, even boring in a good way, across the centuries-long journey

Wondering if that's because the premise itself basically forces conflict (isolated closed system, generations who never chose to be there, inevitable drift from the original mission), or if it's more that "everything worked fine" just doesn't make for compelling fiction regardless of the setup, so writers reach for dysfunction almost by default. Are there actually good examples of a generation ship story where the society holds together reasonably well, and if so, does it still manage to be interesting without the collapse angle?

DAC/amp hardware in 2025 is the silicon actually improving or are we just paying for nicer cases

Something that keeps nagging at me as I've gone deeper into headphone stuff. The core chips inside most DACs and headphone amps haven't changed dramatically in years. ES9038, AK4499, a handful of others rotating through everything from $100 dongles to $1500 desktop units. The actual gap between a wellimplemented cheap build and an expensive one is real, but the marketing around it feels increasingly detached from what the silicon is actually doing.

What I'm curious about is whether anything genuinely interesting is happening at the chip level right now, or if audio hardware has just settled into a pattern where differentiation is almost entirely analog output stage design, filtering choices, and enclosure quality rather than the DAC chip itself.

The reason I ask is that when I look at how much the compute side of things has moved even in cheap embedded hardware, it's kind of wild that dedicated audio silicon seems almost frozen by comparison. Nobody is throwing cuttingedge fab processes at this. Maybe the performance ceiling for DAC chips is effectively reached and the gains are irrelevant to human hearing past a certain point, but I'd at least expect to see power consumption improvements or integration gains that don't seem to be materializing.

Anyone tracking this space more closely than me, or is the answer basically just that the market is too small to justify new silicon development cycles?

SF where work feels like actual work, not just a backdrop

There's something specific about spending 8 hours in a service job where the motions never change, the small talk loops back on itself, and you spend most of your shift watching the clock without actually watching it. That experience makes certain fiction land differently. I keep coming back to SF where the protagonist is just embedded in a system. Not a hero, not chosen for anything. Just someone who shows up, does a thing, and notices the world quietly shifting around them while they work.

Becky Chambers gets at some of this but it softens too quickly into comfort, and I want more friction. A Psalm for the WildBuilt was close but it kind of skips the actual texture of work, the boredom, the strange regularity, the way your mind drifts somewhere else while your hands keep going.

Le Guin gets closer. The Dispossessed has that quality in stretches, especially the sections on Anarres where work is just... present, unglamorous, part of the rhythm of the day.

Wondering what else is out there. Not looking for dystopian labor horror specifically. Just SF where work, the actual experience of it rather than the politics of it, is woven into the story. Short fiction welcome too. It's probably easier to pull off at that length anyway

Spent 3 weeks chasing a hum and it was my neighbor's brand new heat pump. Not even my house.

Ok, this might be the dumbest diyaudio story, but I need to share it somewhere people will actually get it lol.

So I finished my LM3886 build back in June, gainclone chip amp, nothing fancy, socketed the chip, dual mono, toroidal per channel, the usual. Sounded great for like two weeks. Then this low level hum shows up, not 60hz buzz, more like a 120hz-ish drone that comes and goes. Thought it was a ground loop so I did the whole dance, lifted grounds, tried different outlets, swapped the preamp interconnects, even threw a cheap iso transformer at it temporarily. Nothing. Hum still there, random times of day, gone other times.

Started doubting the build itself. Resoldered half the star ground. Checked for cold joints with a magnifier. Reflowed the input stage. Rebuilt the psu caps thinking maybe one was going bad even tho it measured fine on the bench multimeter. Still intermittent hum, and I genuinely could not find a pattern.

Turns out (found this by accident, was outside doing yard stuff) my next door neighbor got a new heat pump / mini split installed like a month before this started, and the compressor cycling was putting noise back into the shared transformer on the pole. My house is on an older run and apparently we're sharing more of that transformer than I realized. Hum only happened when their unit kicked on, which is why it seemed random, it lines up with their thermostat cycles not mine.

Put a decent line filter on my amp's mains input (Furman thing I had lying around from an old PA rig, not audiophile snake oil just a basic filter) and it's way better now, not perfect but livable, and honestly I might just build a proper choke input filter into the amp enclosure at some point since I have the room.

Anyway. Moral of the story, sometimes it's not your solder joints, it's not your grounding scheme, it's not even your house. Check your neighbors before you resolder your whole amp for the third time like an idiot lmao.

Gen 5 SSDs run way too hot

I was looking at benchmarks for gen 5 SSDs under long sustained writes and the heat problem is worse than I thought. Even drives with heatsinks start throttling after 2-3 minutes. For what these drives cost, that's pretty bad.

What surprised me is that the controller runs hotter than the NAND itself. The E26 drives especially get cooked if there's no airflow on them. And most cases and motherboards put zero airflow near the M.2 slots, so the heatsink has to do all the work by itself.

The big sequential numbers look nice in reviews, but once the drive heats up, real workloads with smaller random writes slow down a lot. Feels like these controllers are running hotter than the current designs can handle, and we're all just waiting for the next generation to fix it.

For people who use these drives every day did you actually change anything (fan near the slot, bigger heatsink, undervolting) or did you find the throttling just doesn't matter in normal use?
