Here is a small explanation for what sexuality and LGBTQ+ actually means...

Hey makkale, since this is Pride month, I thought of bringing this up since a lot of us are very confused or have really wrong ideas of what these are but we hear them thrown here and there...

The objective of this post is to not influence or brainwash you in any way... because none of this is something you can brainwash someone into.

Sexuality is a deeply internal and intrinsic thing to a person and they are the only one who can realise it...and no, a person can't choose a sexuality...it's something they realise over time when they mature.

What is Sexuality or Sexual Orientation?

It talks about who you get attracted to, or feel a crush towards...

How do you feel a crush in the first place?

It's a perfectly natural event that happens when you reach adolescence, or puberty...because then, your body and mind start to mature, and your limbic system becomes more active, and that's when a teenager starts to mature sexually...

And part of that sexual maturation, is your crush...an attraction towards another person...

Now, if that other person,

  1. Belongs to the opposite gender, you are straight, or hetersosexual

  2. Belongs to the same gender as you,

Then you are homosexual, or gay

Now in gay, if you're a girl who feels an attraction towards another girl, we call you a lesbian

If you're a boy who feels an attraction towards another boy, we call that you gay...

  1. Sometimes, there are people people who feel an attraction to other people who belong to both genders, like you are a boy and you feel an attraction towards both boys and girls, then you are bisexual.

Now, there are people who belong to either 1, 2, or 3...and what I'm trying to say is, all of them are perfectly normal and natural and just like anything else...

But historically, people who belonged to 2 and 3 were treated like they have a mental disorder, and that they were wrong, and that they shouldn't be that way, which is wrong right? Because sexuality is intrinsic, they didn't learn from outside to belong 2 or 3...they are naturally that way...

And hence, we have pride month, to show those people who belong to 2 and 3 some love, and let them know that they are not different from people who belong to 1.

Now tell me, whether you belong to 1, 2, or 3, is something you realise about yourself as you mature and become a teen, or as you become an adult...who am I to tell you where you belong? The reason of this post is to let you know, that all these types exist and it's perfectly normal to be in any of these types 1, 2 or 3...

Now, if you are someone who has gone through adolescence or puberty, but have not experienced attraction towards anybody, irrespective of gender, if you simply don't have or feel such feelings...then you are Asexual, and it's perfectly fine to be asexual too...

So I've explained LGB...you might wonder about T and Q...

Before understanding that, you need to know the difference between sex, and gender...

Sex, is assigned to you by birth, based on your genitals, the doctors will assign you as a Male, or a Female. There are two sexes, yes.

Gender, is a social construct, which means, it is something we build around ourselves as a society, and is not given by nature...

Gender actually means what you see yourself as, or what you feel you are, in your mind...

It has nothing to do with your sex

If your sex assigned at birth is Male, and

  1. You feel like a boy in your mind, and you understand yourself or think about yourself as a boy, then you are a cisgender.

  2. You feel like a girl in your mind, and understand yourself as a girl or think of yourself as a girl, then you are a transgender.

If your sex assigned at birth is Female, and

  1. You feel like a girl in your mind, and you understand yourself or think about yourself as a girl, then you are a cisgender.

  2. You feel like a boy in your mind, and understand yourself as a boy or think of yourself as a boy, then you are a transgender.

And gender, is more often a spectrum...think of it like boy, at one end and girl at the other...people can think of themselves anywhere in the spectrum...either ends, somewhere in the middle, leaning towards something, it could be anywhere and all of it's normal...

There are people who might not indentify anywhere in the spectrum, and that's normal too...

I understand that maybe a lot of this seems so weird and different to you, and even hard to understand if it's even possible to be like that...and it's because you have not been there or felt anything like that, but that doesn't mean anyone else in the world hasn't.

That's what we need to understand...we might not know what they feel like or what goes in their head, but that doesn't mean it's a fantasy or not true, just because it doesn't happen to you...There are people like that, and they are like all of us...

And lastly, Q or Queer is an umbrella term for all of the above we've talked about...

Now this post is just to let you know, that these things exist, and it's not wrong to be any of the above, and what matters is that we all are humans above all, and we all deserve to be treated as equal and loved.

You are totally free to make your mind up and form and opinion on whether you like this or not, or like the queer community, or not. But one thing you must remember is that, irrespective of what you think or opine about the queer community, stay assured that they are fellow human beings with respect and the fact that they are queer does not give you any right to think of them as anything less than yourself or different from you or weird or not normal.

You can choose to support them or not support them, but you don't have the choice of treating them as lesser human beings or not giving them the respect you give to anybody else or passing insensitive comments about them.

If you want further clarification for a point, or have an opinion you need to respectfully let us know, by all means you are welcome.

You don't have to fully understand this to support a fellow human being, because at the end of the day, we're all humans and that's what happens...if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all.

Peace.
