Weekly releases are ruining one of the best things about OTT
I genuinely don't get why so many OTT platforms have gone back to weekly episode releases.
This made sense for TV daily soaps because episodes were still being written or adjusted based on ratings and audience feedback. But most streaming shows already have the entire season filmed, edited and ready to go. So why not just release all the episodes at once?
One of the biggest reasons I subscribed to OTT platforms in the first place was the freedom to binge watch. Finishing a great show over a weekend is a completely different experience from waiting 7 days between episodes.
Shows like The Boys, From and now Silo have all done this and it's honestly frustrating. Even Netflix, which practically built its brand around binge releases, has started experimenting with split seasons and weekly releases.
I get that there are business reasons behind it. Weekly releases keep a show trending for longer, generate more discussion on social media, reduce subscriber churn and bring people back to the app every week. From a platform's perspective, it makes perfect sense.
But as a viewer, it feels like we're losing one of the biggest advantages that streaming had over traditional television.
Am I the only one who still prefers getting the entire season on day one?
