Need advice: UPSC to MBA – How can I build relevant work experience before B-school?

Hi everyone,

I spent the last few years preparing for UPSC, but I've decided to move on and pursue an MBA. I'm currently preparing for CAT.

My concern is that I have no conventional corporate work experience. I know that any work I start now won't count as work experience for CAT admissions, but I'm more concerned about Summer Internships (SIPs) and final placements once I'm in B-school. I feel having some practical experience would make me a stronger candidate during interviews.

Since I'm preparing for CAT, I can only commit part-time until November. After CAT, however, I can work full-time for around 4–5 months before joining college (assuming things go well).

I'm looking for roles that would genuinely help me develop relevant skills and strengthen my profile. I'm open to startups, business analytics, operations, product, consulting, founder's office, research, or anything else where I can learn. It doesn't necessarily have to pay well. Learning and resume value are my priorities.

A little about my background:

  • Graduated from IISER Pune with a major in Chemical Sciences. Minor in Maths and Physics.
  • Completed my MS thesis abroad and co-authored a paper in ACS Catalysis.
  • Runner-up in an online Startup Weekend during COVID, where our team built and pitched a startup concept in 72 hours using market research, customer validation, and a working prototype.
  • I might also get a Business Analytics internship through a friend next month at a small firm (not confirmed yet).

Given my background, what kind of roles should I target? Where should I look? Are there any platforms, startups, fellowships, or opportunities that you'd recommend?

Any advice or leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is BMS College a good choice for MBA?

Hi everyone,
I'm planning to pursue an MBA and I'm considering BMS. I'd love to hear from current students, alumni, or anyone who knows about the college.

I have a few questions:
How are the placements, especially for finance nd hr?
How is the faculty and overall learning experience?
Is the ROI worth it?
What are the internship opportunities like?

Would you recommend joining BMS for an MBA?

Free MBA at an Illinois State University

I have the opportunity to go to any Illinois state university due to the Illinois veterans grant. I have been researching schools, I live in northern Illinois and work in Manufacturing as a mid level manager. Is my best option UIUC? Currently have a masters in C.S. Looking to gain management skills and work towards a director level role.

Other programs I have looked at are NIU and SIUE.

UIUC seems like the best option though. Also, the program needs to be online or after hours as I cannot give up my salary to go back to school.

Are there any other programs I should consider?

Should I prepare for an MBA or focus on something else?

I'm a 22-year-old B.Tech graduate with no work experience. My academics are 74% in 10th, 69% in 12th, and around 5.5 CGPA in engineering.

For the last 2 months, I've been actively applying for jobs, reaching out for referrals, and trying to get my foot in the door. However, the job market seems quite slow right now, with many companies reportedly under hiring freezes or hiring very selectively.

Because of this, I'm wondering whether it makes sense to use this time to seriously prepare for CAT/MBA instead of waiting around and hoping for opportunities to open up.

I know my academic profile isn't great, so I'm trying to be realistic. I'd appreciate honest feedback from people who had similar academics, took CAT, or decided against the MBA route altogether.

If you were in my position, would you spend the next year preparing for an MBA, or keep focusing entirely on getting a job and gaining work experience first?

Please be brutally honest. I'd rather hear the hard truth now than regret a decision later.

MBA in Managerial Accounting

What kind of doors may this open up for me? It allows for CMA cert but i dont think CPA. A little background I am currently an Asset Manager for the State and so i have some experience in accounting/finance. I have many years of property management experience as well. My undergrad degree is in Community Development. I hope to someday maybe work for a nonprofit or a remote job in accounting. Do you think the MBA can lead to any of these opportunities? Or what would be available to me? I've done so much reading and there's mixed reviews on this degree.

Online MPA

Hey all, this winter I was accepted into Baruch’s Online MPA program (I live out of state). I was and am very excited to get started as Baruch’s reputation as a school with a strong emphasis in social justice is what led me to apply here. To get everyone caught up on my current thinking, I am a bit dismayed that 1) as an online student I won’t be able to easily pursue the needed electives to get a social justice specialization and 2) that I am on a cohort schedule and won’t be able to graduate faster than three years. Perhaps I am underestimating the time it will take, and truly I am busy what with two jobs, three kids plus a new born, but I was really planning on finishing in two as I am extremely excited and hungry to earn this goal.

My question for those who have some experience with Baruch’s MPA program (online or otherwise) is, broadly, how do you feel about the school and the quality of education it provides. More specifically, is there a feeling of social justice being emphasized even in the core curriculum? Really, any insight will do.

Thanks.

MBA in Marketing

Can I do an MBA in Marketing if I studied Bachelor of Travel and Tourism Management and had a subject called “Tourism Marketing”?

I’m planning to pursue a master’s degree in Portugal. Does having Tourism Marketing in my bachelor’s make me eligible for an MBA in Marketing, or is my overall degree background more important?

If I can’t pursue an MBA in Marketing, what are the alternative pathways to get a Master’s in Marketing?

21, Soon-to-Be Sous Chef, and Already Questioning My Career Choice

I'm 21 and currently in an 18-month Management Trainee program at a resort after completing my Hotel Management degree.

By the time I finish the program, I'll likely be promoted to Sous Chef, but here's the issue: I don't feel my skills and knowledge will match the title. The property I'm working at isn't exactly known for high culinary standards, and I often feel like I'm learning less than I should be.

Lately I've been questioning whether hospitality is the right long-term career for me. The long hours, limited family time, increasing pressure with seniority, and overall lifestyle are making me reconsider things. At the same time, I've already invested years into this field and walking away feels like starting over.

I'm considering pursuing an online/distance master's degree while working, possibly an MBA (Operations, Supply Chain, General Management, etc.) to keep my options open both inside and outside hospitality.

For those who've been working for a while:

- Have you ever felt "behind" in your early 20s?

- Did you stay in your original industry or switch?

- Was an online MBA worth it?

- If you were in my position, would you focus on building experience first or start a master's alongside work?

- Does a Sous Chef title from a weaker property actually help in the long run, or is skill what ultimately matters?

Looking for honest advice from people who've already navigated this stage of their careers.
