My Friend Was Offered a Position, But Unpaid Training Before He Starts, Normal in Taiwan?

My friend accepted an offer last week to work in Taiwan as an ESL teacher, he will start early next week but they are having him come in every day for an hour or two to train with no pay. Is this even legal? They haven't even signed any contract just yet. Thoughts?

Nothing But Fake Profiles in Taiwan?

I, young Asian-Canadian male, downloaded the a popular dating app in Taiwan, “OMI”, out of curiosity and was hit with 100 likes within a couple of days. I’m not a model or conventionally attractive, so this is was not normal to me. When I was using apps in the states, had probably two likes… in all of the 2ish years that I used them.

Once swiping right, had loads of matches but no responses. It’s almost like women just passively swipe right, or that they’re all bots/fake accounts.

Anybody had similar experiences or thoughts about this?

Is Being American/Canadian an Advantage Over Others?

Interviewer told me I have a good chance of getting a Job in Taiwan since they're seeking candidates from English-speaking countries, strongly preferring America, Canada, UK, and everything after.

My debacle is that I don't any experience, just the TEFL cert. Is that higher leverage versus those that have experience but a non-native such as someone with a thick accent.

Recruiter trying to scare me or is it true it’s too late to apply in Taiwan?

Recruiter got me an interview with a cram school in Taoyuan. I did ask for more hours and pay, I would’ve been okay if they said no. Recruiter got back to me via email upset that I negotiated, “you messed it up”, and the school decided to hire someone else. Few more emails from the recruiter with snarky comments over the fact I negotiated. Telling me he was shocked I negotiated, “where do you have so much confidence”, and that he worked hard to get me an interview.

The recruiter managed to get me another interview with a different school, Changhua county, while telling me that this is probably the final chance I’ll likely get a position.

Is the recruiter lying or he speaks some truth?

Small Buxiban Offering 56k NTD Per Month in Taoyuan, is This Good?

I was offered 700NTD for 18 to 20 hours a week in Taoyuan, north part, from a small Buxiban. Age range is between 6 to 13. I have no experience, from Canada, bachelor's in tech, and TEFL-certified. I tried negotiating for more pay and hours, but they rejected.... and were surprised that I tried.

Good? Bad? Thoughts please.

BudgetAir Didn't Give Out "Confirmation Number" - Please Help

I booked a flight from California to Taiwan from BudgetAir, the two airlines that were booked from BudgetAir were "ZipAir" Tokyo" and "Thai Lion Air".

ZipAir is looking for this "confirmation number" to find my booking, I looked through my emails from BudgetAir and even viewed the E-ticket PDF they sent, I don't see it. I tried entering the Online Check-in number, nope, didn't work. Currently in contact but I am wondering if anybody else had experienced this issue, what happened?

Return to IT for $130k + Hybrid?

After several months of being unemployed, decided to change my career. Been applying in the new field and have gotten offers and will be moving out of the US to work in Japan. Completely something I wanted to do for a long time, changing my career because I felt IT isn’t for me. However, everything has a price. I’ll be leaving in a couple of weeks, I could back out and buy a return flight.

Would yall return back to a career you’re not really passionate for for 60% raise from your previous job, the most you would make so far, and hybrid? I feel that with the higher salary and hybrid, I’ll have a relax and chill life with more financial freedom.

Edit: Alrite, some of yall are being a bit upset over this. Let me be clear, I HAVE NOT GOTTEN THE OFFER AND ONLY TALKING TO A RECRUITER THAT IS TALKING WITH THE MAIN COMPANY. I’ve been unemployed for months, endlessly applying like some of yall, and now I might be able to get back in. Sorry yall are upset, truly am.

Where to Make Friends as a Foreigner?

Going to head to Seoul, northern part, for a year and was wondering how can a young Asian Australian (not Korean) make friends? Where? Would Koreans be willing be open to being friends with a foreigner? Any social norms I need to adopt or let go?

Where to Make Friends as a Foreigner?

I'll be moving to Taiwan in a few weeks for work for a year and was wondering how does a foreigner make friends? Where? I'm a young Asian guy (not from a mandarin-speaking country) from the west and trying to prepare my relocation to Taiwan. Any advice?

Edit: I’m coming from the states.

Are Online Degrees Not Generally Accepted in Taiwan?

Trying to find a real clear answer whether my 4-year-bachelor’s degree(did it in 6 months), from Western Governors University, will be accepted in Taiwan. I had one quick reply from a school that my degree is will not be approved for work permits. I, however, had an offer a few days ago but rejected it for being terrible. Am I not able to obtain ESL work in Taiwan?

Edit: More details.

Edit 2: more more details.

Is this a bad contract in South Korea?

Location: South Korea. Near Daejeon
Pay: 2.4 million wons
Hours: 8:30 to 5:30 , “30” hour quota per week, unpaid labor is a given though.
Benefits: Typical South Korean work benefits; free housing, medical, flight reimbursement, etc.

My background is no experience, bachelors in an unrelated field, and a TEFL certification.

Good or nah?

How Easy Would It Be to Fly Out to Taiwan and Find an ESL Job?

After hearing opinions from this subreddit, it’s somewhat recommendable to fly out to Taiwan right now to find an ESL job, especially since it’s peak hiring season. I have a bachelors in a non-related field, no experience, and only a TEFL certificate. I’m already receiving dozens of interviews and a couple offers, but terrible offers that I rejected them.

What would be some things to be aware of prior to and upon arrival? Would you recommend me flying to Taiwan without a job lined up?

HR Wants me to Fly Out to Taiwan with No Offer?

School is in Taipei, listed salary is up to 71k a month. The HR representative wants me to fly out and arrive on the 11th, medical exam would take 3 weeks, and I would start on August 1st. I won't be paid until mid-September. They mentioned once I arrive, she will find a position. Is this all normal?

Edit: Decided not to accept the offer.

Is it Worth Working in Taiwan? Taiwan's Benefit Package is Terrible

I have an offer from Taiwan for 55TWD a month as a first-year ESL teacher, all I have is my bachelor's and the TEFL certification. I had an offer from South Korea, however, the school had terrible reviews for teachers but benefits such as housing, flight reimbursements, and total visa coverage. The Taiwanese offer, buxibans, offered none of this other than an end of the year contract bonus of $950.

Is it worth working in Taiwan? Or should I wait for an offer from South Korea?
