Spare Room

I have big breaks in my timetable and I was just wondering if its normal (or okay) to use empty tutorial rooms for studying/chilling? Its pretty common in UoA, so im wondering if its the same for AUT and if so, where are some places I can find spare rooms to use? i dont mind leaving if its actually booked.

Also, do you need a special card to access these tutorial rooms.

Ik there are library study spaces to book, but I prefer being alone and just focusing with no distractions.

AUT engineering to UoA midway 2nd yr

Is it possible to switch after completing sem 1 of 2nd yr engineering at AUT to directly starting sem 2 of 2nd yr at UoA.

This is given the papers taken can be cross-credited and the spec doesnt have a GPA requirement as its not popular.

Furthermore, is switching not allowed for 3rd year?

SWE internship- how bad is it for someone starting their degree in 2026

Fellow AUT student here! I keep hearing a lot that the name of the uni you comeplete youre SWE not mattering once you land your first job. Not sure how true that is BUT I'm just curious how hard it is to LAND the first job or even internship for that matter.

Coming from someone whos a bit new to the tech industry and never had a "burning" passion for coding or software in general, how difficult would it be to get internships? Like do they look at a really high 8 or 9 GPA??? Or like your work experience at other sectors and projects youve done in ur free time.

Im 22 now and alr feel extremely behind for someone starting their degree and while im not too picky on having an amazing secure senior hightech career in the long run, I just desperately wanna graduate and get this over with ASAP.

I dont feel like ranting anymore but im just curious whether youre an UOA or AUT student, have you gotten work towards your 800 hours? If so, how great was ur CV and were there other interns working with you from AUT?

BEngTech (mechanical)

Has anyone here taken/ is currently studying BEngTech(mechanical Engineering)? Could you please share some insights on the papers taught and the jobs that it leads to.

If you are currently wokring or has landed an internship, whats your day-to-day like and hows your tasks different to a BE graduate or a technician/trades mechanic who repairs and maintains the project and machines.

I am just trynna understand how much field work and practicality this degree leads to in the workforce. I've heard some graduates work CAD drafting or development engineering in healthcare but would like to know how common it is tech grads to get desk jobs.

BE (hons) and BEngTech (mechanical)

Apart from the papers taken whats the actual role like working in BEngtech as opposed to a certified 'engineer' who did BE. Im trying to figure out my career plan but want to finish study sooner.

Im personally not too keen on working in high physically demanding roles or with big machinery. Would rather prefer healthcare type setup but more like CAD drafting roles. But im not sure if thats the job of a qualified engineering doing an honours.

Also whats the the process if i were to BEngtech, feel how it is to work in the job and transfering to UoA to do a masters in Engineering? Would that qulaify me to do R&D type engineer work?

Also side tracking a bit, does AUT have a similar engineer pathway for software? Like a 3 yr IT degree but under engineering?

Kate Edgar computers not working

Is it something to fix on my end with IT or are the computers just faulty?

I've tried both UPI and ID and this has never happened before.

If pic isnt loading it says: we can't sign you in with this credential because your domain isnt available. make sure ur device is connected to ur organisers netweork and try again. if you previosuly signed in on this device with another credential, you cansign in with that credential.

Issue with my laptop keyboard (windows- ACER)

My caps key, a key (the letter a) and x key (the letter x) hasnt been working since last night. It keeps going on and off and works for a split second after I restart, just long enough for me to type in my password. I am lowkey so stressed cos I cant risk losing my laptop close to exams. IDEK WHATS WRONGGG. I've owned it for 3 yrs, mostly keep it at home, dont game or keyboard heavily. (however my cat like a week ago did walk over my keyboard but chatgpt said that might not have caused this)

I went up to IT, pb tech and the tech square guy at uoa and they all told me it might be a hardware issue. i just need some gudiance as to what i should do :
- should I just ignore it for now and just use copy pasted letters, cos the diagnostic test are so expenny and deal with this later after exams

- pay 53 dollars to the tech square guy at engineering building to assess it the whole day. not even start repairing. He said he might be able to do student disocunt

- send it over to pb tech to fix it over 1 week (thats what the guy said cos they'll have to send it over to their head office or sm) with no discount at all!

ANY TECHY PEOPLE FROM THIS BEAUTIFUL WONDERFUL UNIVERSITY HAVE A SOLUTION FOR ME? (or is willing to fix my laptop free of charge plllssssss)

ps: as im typing this, the caps and 'a' is working. just not x. but half n hour ago infront of the pbtech guy all 3 werent working.

Auditing language lectures

hey yall, im interested in picking up a new language as a hobby and apart from yt and other sources id also like to audit or attend a uni language course lecture. To those who are taking or have taken a language paper, how does the lectures work? is it participation based(like tutorials) or big lectures where you can be invisible among the other enrolled students.

Im keen on learning french/spanish/chinese/ (russian and arabic but i dont think uni offers them)

Any advice or recs welcomed!!

study rooms with a whiteboard (city campus)

Title basically summarises.
I've tried looking into bookable rooms/booths at the library but they're all full (like anywhere else at uni- sideye kate edgar).

SO i was just wondering if there are rooms like the ones they use at tutorials available to book, or if we can just go to one thats empty and doesnt show a booking slot on the screen?

- if so, where can i find them? is it usually in upper floors? OGGB/ SCIENCE building?
- this is for personal use btw, not study groups, so i mean if anyone else wants to use the space w/me feel free
