Hey fellow teachers! I posted this in the Canadian Teachers subreddit but thought I should actually post it to the r/AskTeachers subreddit since it’s made for q’s.
I’m a TTOC in Canada and have received a gift that will allow me to purchase a few pro-d books. I am hoping that you can share books that actually helped your classroom management, special needs or neurodiverse student population gain success, or deal with student anxiety. I’m hoping for books that can help me build a toolkit moving forward. I see students with more needs than ever and fewer skills to boot.
I’d love recommendations in these areas:
students that get stuck and become argumentative over details or doing work at all. Something that could help rigid thinking patterns, lack of metal flexibility or openness to the ideas of others. Basically a book on helping ADHD/Autistic students to build flexibility.
teaching the concepts of respect and how to behave respectfully in a classroom environment. Many of my students come from a single parent background with little community involvement, and quite a bit of school refusal as well. I always lead with connection (it’s been commented on by many of my coworkers or administrators I work with, so the connection piece isn’t it - it’s the dynamics of respect and how to teach them to say… middle schoolers that have the attention span of a charming but highly active raccoon). Raccoons I adore, ps 😂
books on pedagogy that encourages student engagement, that you’ve actually found to be helpful in getting your disengaged students to lean in towards school a little more. Like infinitesimal is better than nothing in my view.
personal growth books that would help me as a teacher with setting more clear boundaries. I effectively have somehow grown up to have basically zero sense of anger or outrage so I am a very calm and quiet teacher, even with ridiculous classes. It tends to help me out as they do see that I care about them and am generally unbothered by their antics and they calm down, but I do give them too much time to figure it out. Maybe something Brene Brownish? I just need something to cue me to correct earlier. I am a wee bit too complacent. (This might be due to my training - I was in schools where the kids were quite violent so low-level stuff isn’t catching my attention in the same way).
Thanks for those of you who’ve read this far!

Hey is there a pinned post with recommendations for self cleaning cat litters?
I’m in Canada with a small cat and a large dog with a real taste for treats of the cat poop kind. I would like to get a self cleaning litter box that stores the waste in an inaccessible bin/compartment so the dog can’t get to it. The way our house is designed I can’t actually move the kitty litter to any location she can’t reach so this seems like a good option.
What litter box would you recommend and which would you not? I would like to keep it under 600$ CAD. I think I’d like one that has walls as my cat is a litter flicker when she tries to cover her waste.
Just to ensure this doesn’t get removed the cat and dog both see the vet regularly and the dog is just stupid unfortunately. No mineral or nutritional deficiencies, just a real love for poop.
