My husband comes from what most people would consider a wealthy family, but a large portion of their assets has been tied up in legal disputes for years. On paper, they have wealth, but accessing it would require significant effort and cooperation from family members, which hasn’t happened.

A few years ago, my husband lost his job while we were living overseas. At the time, I had recently resigned after having our baby so I could focus on childcare. We were going through a very difficult period financially and emotionally.

Because he had always believed his parents were financially secure, my husband reached out to them for help. However, they told him they couldn’t do anything to support us. That response deeply hurt him. He felt abandoned during one of the most challenging times of his life.

Since then, he has largely cut off contact with both of his parents. It’s been more than five years. Thankfully, he eventually found a new job, I returned to work as well, and we managed to rebuild our lives. Financially, we’re doing fine now.

The problem is that the incident left a lasting emotional scar. He no longer sees his parents the way he once did and continues to carry a lot of resentment toward them. He has no interest in reconnecting, while I find myself feeling sad about the situation because I miss my in-laws and wish there could be some healing. (My child does not know anything about grandparents)

I don’t want to pressure my husband or dismiss his feelings, but I also don’t know how to navigate this. I’m stuck between supporting him and grieving the loss of that family relationship myself.
