Event Description

After the Supreme Court dismantled critical parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, MSJW is organizing a People Over Politics training specifically geared toward teaching Mississippi voters what is happening and how they can stay organized to resist attacks on voting rights in our state. This a critical moment to stay informed and engaged.

Join Mississippi for a Just World (MSJW) for People Over Politics: Voting Rights Edition at the Bennie G. Thompson Academic Center at Tougaloo College. Together, we will break down the Supreme Court's landmark decision in Louisiana v. Callais and how it changed federal law protecting voters in the redistricting process.

In this hands-on session, participants will learn:

  • How today’s ruling could reshape redistricting law across the country
  • How maps are drawn and what that means for your vote and your representation at every level of government, from Congress all the way down to your local school board
  • How to check your registration, share this information, and stay informed and connected as these changes unfold

Many changes are coming for Mississippi Voters. This summer, Mississippi’s congressional districts will be up for change, and the Mississippi Shield Act (SB 2588) was signed into law earlier this year, which introduces new citizenship verification requirements for voter registration that could affect eligible voters across the state. We are stronger when we learn together and organize together. Join MSJW for People Over Politics: Voting Rights Edition to join a community of Mississippians staying informed and fighting back together.

As part of the training, participants will receive:

  • A People Over Politics Advocacy Workbook
  • A comprehensive legislative advocacy training
  • Information about Louisiana v. Callais, Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, redistricting, the Shield Act, voter registration status, and what documents may be needed

Our mission is to make sure every eligible voter in Mississippi has the information they need to participate fully in our democracy.
