Part 2: flash modded iPod mini is on the file error screen, not showing up on my computer

I'm using an iFlash CF adapter with a sandisk 32GB SD card. The ribbons seem to be fine and I had an issue earlier with another SD card where it would show the sad iPod screen, but here it's showing the file error screen and it shows the "do not disconnect" screen when plugged in, but doesn't show up on my computer so I can't restore it. I should also add that I'm using an aftermarket cable but it worked fine when it had it's original hard drive in.

iPod mini flash modding: need help

I'm using the iFlash CF adapter with an integral 16 GB SD card. I originally modded it yesterday but it was giving me the sad iPod face (I assumed originally this was how it's supposed to look as I don't know what the mini's restore screen looks like) so I figured the SD card wasn't formatted properly or something. There's nothing on it and it's just a regular FAT32 card so I figured I didn't put the adapter in properly. I reinserted it in and slid it back into it's case so I could connect the touch wheel and switch it on. It can charge fine, it shows the charging animation, but there's no more sad iPod and it's not showing up on my computer. When I reboot it, it does the normal blank screen thing but the apple logo doesn't show, it just goes back to showing the charging animation if it's plugged in. I don't know what the issue is here...

I should mention that I haven't tested if it shows up on iTunes because this computer can't run it so I'd have to borrow a windows computer, but when it had a hard drive, it would show up in my file manager and it's not now.

I have joined the thinkpad side... (L480)

Alright so for context: I have a kubuntu PC at home which I've used for years, however I needed a computer for work (I work at my parents' company) and I wouldn't be able to just pick up my desk setup and move it back and forth every day. I was asked to look into a laptop model that can run the software needed (which is a website) and modern laptops are too expensive due to the memory shortage (and personally I hate modern laptops because they're too thin, too little ports and too much AI) so I went looking on ebay for some good quality thinkpads (and spending over an hour looking at this subreddit for recommendations).

This is the Thinkpad L480, which I bought for £150 in great condition: if the sticker telling me that this is an old company laptop from like 2021 then I would've assumed this was brand new. I like it's weight, thickness and that it has ports. This kind of laptop size is ideal for me and I'm very happy with it. Unfortunately it came with a fresh install of Windows 11. Very nice of the seller to suffer the windows installation process for me, but I hate windows 11 so right after switching it on to see if it works properly, I burned linux mint onto a USB stick and installed that onto it. I like Kubuntu but it's not the most straightforward OS out there, and I don't care about customisability as much with this as this is for work stuff, so I figured mint would be the simplest solution (and also I wanted to experiment with other distros). Because my setup currently is frutiger aero themed, I made the wallpaper on the thinkpad frutiger metro themed so it looks like a little sister. The photos aren't great cause I took them on my flip phone but you get the general idea.

I've had a respect for thinkpads ever since I found out about their existence and their community, however I'm very much a PC person and for a while, my smartphone was my portable computer (before I ditched it). I care about the quality of my tech belongings because I get very attached to them so I wanted something high quality and I knew thinkpads had a good reputation. I also like how they're one of the few big brands that let you get computers pre-installed with linux. I can't say much for the quality of newer thinkpads but my brother has a mid range ubuntu one from about 2024 (which I recommended when his older windows 11 laptop kicked the bucket) and that seems to be a fine laptop. I do like the chunk of this though, can't stand thin tech. I also like how the red dot in "thinkpad" on the lid lights up when it's in use! That's so cute!

Anyway great first impressions, probably gonna use it in uni quite a bit too when I start in September (although I prefer writing notes on paper so idk how that would work in lectures).

Ultimate Software V2 on Linux?

I have the Retro R8 Mouse and it works fine on my Linux computer but I want to map the red circle buttons along it's side. However the Windows version of the software when running through wine, doesn't detect any devices. Is there a workaround such as other ways to map the buttons (the retro keyboard can have it's buttons mapped via the star button) or is it impossible on linux?

How do I stop getting fussed about nail length?

I can't stand having long nails (and by long I mean like anything that can be felt if I press a finger on the top of the nail) and I assume it's some weird autism thing but it's getting to the point where I've messed up my nails and the skin around it with blades trying to get it into the right shape and now they look all wonky and ugly. They have nail polish on to help hide it but they still feel weird due to me accidentally slicing off too many layers. This mostly affects my index and thumbnails and I've done this so long that the shapes have grown kinda weird. I want proper nails because I'm vain (and also I'm getting a bit annoyed over how common it is for them to hurt) but acrylic nails I just keep trying to peel them off and the length is too distracting.

I also like to go stabbing at the nail and cuticle with paper scissors if I'm bored in class but that's probably unrelated.

Questions about SD cards for flash modding

I bought an iPod mini 2nd gen off vinted a few months ago and it works fine after I did a battery mod on it. Although increasingly more and more, it'll freeze up or not boot up right and go into that sad ipod screen, so I figured the hard drive was just getting old (there was a lot of music on it when I first received it so I assume it's been used a lot by the previous owner).

I was planning on using the iFlash CF adapter due to CF cards being a pain to find nowadays, but proper sized SD cards I've had trouble finding in small enough sizes from reputable brands. I can find 8/16GB cards on Amazon fairly easily but they're either obscure chinese brands or really expensive SanDisk ones that are like 256GB and my current music collection is only 2GB so it would be a waste. Integral has simple normal sized SD cards in 8GB but I wanted to ask how well this brand works within the iFlash CF adapter because I haven't found a good answer in relation to iPod flash modding.

I wish normal sized SD cards were easier to come about nowadays: I don't want to have to use a microSD adapter in my CF adapter and have an ungodly amount of storage.

Is the SNES classic edition worth it in 2026?

I'm getting into game collecting but I'm mostly interested in games from the 7th and 8th generation (and maybe 5th but I dread to think how expensive Gamecubes and Dreamcasts are currently). That being said, the 4th generation looks interesting to me and while I could emulate it on my WiiU via homebrewing, it just wouldn't feel the same using the gamepad. Consoles on ebay sell for around the price of boxed SNES classic editions and the latter has pretty much all the SNES games I have an interest in so is it worth buying the SNES classic edition in 2026?

Think I should also clarify that I don't have a Nintendo Switch so I can't use the subscription service to just download all these (subscription services go against my morals).

A month-ish in the dumbphone lifestyle

I see people taking about how difficult it was to transition and this this and this popped up as problems and so and so had to be changed in their lifestyle to accomidate but I've found the transition to be very smooth. Maybe a little too smooth. I have a Kyocera KY-42C for reference and I haven't felt like I've been shoved into a very different lifestyle like how some others describe the first few days. Maybe it's because my phone still has some smart features like apk sideload compatibility (for whatsapp) and a camera that doesn't look like the photos have been microwaved 4 times when I view them on my computer, that or the phone's quality has sandpapered the bridge to be nice and smooth.

People don't talk about the quality of keitais enough: this phone is made out of really nice feeling plastic, great clicky buttons, pretty good T9 functionality so keypad typing is less of a hassle, UI is good for a dumbphone (ie not kaios), runs pretty well, camera is better quality than the expensive digicam from the 2000s I dug out of storage, screen is nice and vibrant despite it's size, fits well in the hand, built well and the sub display has a second display for battery and connectivity! Reviews always bring up the clock on the sub display but never the battery percentage and I don't know why.

Anyway in terms of actual intergration, I don't actually use my phone all that much. It does 3 things: whatsapp, camera and calendar, all of which I've mapped to the function buttons. I use my computer for things like social media and other typical smartphone things so having another device that's basically a computer with a funny screen never sat right with me. Always felt like I wasn't making the most out of my purchase with a smartphone because I wasn't doing many smartphone things on it, and when I did, it made me bored from too much scrolling. I've found single purpouse devices are easier to process because there's no wasted power when it comes to my ipod or my ereader etc. People have noticed my phone and they think it's cool, maybe even admirable that I'm going against silicon valley. Hard to say though considering I live in britain where people mostly keep to themselves, but my family thinks my phone is cool.

Anyway, I don't miss the smartphone lifestyle and reddit not loading on that and youtube being a pain to navigate with a D pad means the little amount of social media addiction I even had in the first place can't grow at all.

How to edit home screen on kyocera phones?

I've attached images to show what I mean (yes I know they're both sharps) but I was asking on a post on r/dumbphones where someone was showing off their KYF42 how they put widgets on their home screen and apparently it's in the home screen settings but I can't find it for the life of me. All I can find is the widgets in the developer settings but I can't edit them and the grid is half the screen size. I was gonna ask there but the original post was deleted so does anybody know how to put/edit widgets on the homescreen of at KY-42C? With the default launcher.

▲ 17 r/bliish

The UI gives me retro facebook vibes but I'm late gen z so I don't know what retro facebook was like and I can't see anything without making an account, and I already have a couple accounts on retro social media sites, so I was wondering what the deal with bliish is cause all I can tell currently is that it's shiny and it can run on basically anything that sparks electricity (I found out about this from a cross post on r/dumbphones).

Left is the screenshot I took, right is what google translate spat out when I fed it said screenshot. Is this just for the default japan only apps cause I've been using it fine for the past 4 weeks after this and all I've noticed is that the weather widget I put on my homescreen via developer settings that I can't get rid of for some reason is stuck on the 13th. I've only got these notifications the past few days though...
