Bonjour/Hi,
As an outsider I’m not here to discredit your grocery culture here but I’m genuinely curious to know what Québécois think of this.
I’ve experienced the high quality of France and the similar gamified-illusion of choice in the US.
As someone who shops mainly at IGA, I guess they have some sort of partnership with Compliments, saputo, etc. But when I realize that they dont even try to act like you can choose another brand …
For instance when it comes to milk, whether it’s Neilson, Nutrilait, or Armstrong, it’s all Saputo.
It’s easy for people to say in the comments: “just go to Jean-Talon Market,” but that is definitely a luxury of time and transport for and probably most people in center montreal.
I also am expecting people to say “you get what you pay for,” but it often feels like premium prices for what are essentially white label generic products because there isn’t mid tier competition.
Do you feel like you’re choosing your food or just choosing which of the 3 gets your bid this week? And was it always like this or I just came at the wrong time? (emphasis on why)
I would love to see something change for the better.
update: looks like a large % of the comments are saying that quebec is pretty much the same as the rest of canada and its just the way it is..
