The Criel Mound’s Spoke-Wheel of Skeletons

Rising quietly in a city park in South Charleston, West Virginia, the Criel Mound doesn’t look like much from the street but it’s one of the largest surviving Adena burial mounds in the country. Built between roughly 250 and 150 B.C., it originally stood as part of a network of some 50 mounds and earthworks stretching along the Kanawha Valley, most of which were destroyed during 19th-century industrialization.

‎When the Smithsonian excavated it in 1883, they found two skeletons buried near the surface with stone hoes, a projectile point, and stone disks, and even much deeper, eleven more skeletons, ten of which were arranged in a circle around a central figure. Archaeologist Bob Maslowski has noted this radial “spoke” burial pattern is unusually deliberate compared to other mound sites in the region, where bodies tend to be scattered more randomly, suggesting the central figure held special status, with the surrounding ten perhaps buried as attendants or in ritual formation around them. The mound was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and today anchors Staunton Park, hosting arts fairs and community gatherings just steps from a 2,000-year-old grave.

I spend my day deciding between 50 shades of the same color

I work in a design studio as an interior color consultant, and my job is basically to argue with people about colors all day. My job mostly includes helping people choose paint colors for their homes, but it isn't as straightforward as it sounds.

We don't just randomly choose nice colors and see where it goes. We have to map out the home's color journey entirely so that it doesn't feel jarring when you, say, go from a bright kitchen to a dark hallway. We have to choose the colors keeping in mind that the transition should feel smooth.

We also have to cross-reference the paint with fabric samples, floor tiles, and woodwork so that everything works well as a unit rather than looking like some random colors thrown here and there.

And sometimes the clients are so vague with their demands. Someone comes and says, "I want something cozy and premium." Now we have to somehow translate this emotional brief into an actual floor plan and paint colors.

We also have to check which direction a room faces and where the natural light comes from, because that can change how the color looks throughout the day.

One issue we have to deal with is the metamerism color trap. Basically, the same color might look beautiful and crisp under the studio lighting but become completely different under the LED lights in the client's home. And somehow they think it is our fault.

We also have to act as half designers and half couple therapists. When partners come together to choose a color, sometimes they have such intense arguments that we have to jump in between and calm them down. At the end of the day, we just want them to agree on one color and pay us.

Still, I enjoy doing my work, and it does pay me well. All this while getting to play with colors all day long.

But my friends hate going shopping with me now. They say, "I like this white T-shirt." And I say, "No, this is more of a cool white with a little bit of a creamy touch to it."

I think I have a problem.

Invest in different-coloured ballpens

Having and using different colors can actually make your note-taking (and reviewing!) easier to organize and look at. Like, specifying which color will mean this, and that…

In my experience, of course I did start using only black and red pens with some highlighters on the side. however, I noticed I could keep a topic/quote easier when I could remember and I knew which color I used when I wrote it.

I did certainly not mean you have to change every now and then as you write. No, that would be truly a hassle and could waste more time. Just make sure you’re sticking to what specific purpose you thought of one pen u use for note-taking. That way, you’ll get used to what each color means and you can spot what I have mentioned from above, easily.

You also don’t have to go overboard with the colors. 4-5 is enough. But if you can do the whole rainbow, better. Remember, you’re not using them just to make your notes aesthetically-pleasing or for whatever sake of it. What matters here is the purpose you assigned to each particular color. You can label them also with a tape just in case. Do what you think might work for you.

separated parents, love them soooo much equally :(((( pero ang hirap pala kapag tumatanda na

hi ! im 25f, my parents are separated since i was 6 years old. thank God i have a good relationship with them. my father (49) is an ofw while im currently staying at my mom's (48) while she's working. still living with her since i'm still single & she has no one except us her children.

father - he took care of me financially. hindi kami well off. wala rin kami sa middle class. but he made sure that all my needs (even my wants) are being met. when he's in PH, he wants take care of me kahit na 25 na ako. he has his own family na in diff country. all filipino. he has a 5 and 3 year old kiddos. he wants to retire after 5 years. but since he has kids, kelangan niya mag doble kayod.

mother - she took care of me physically. she's present. we're bestfriends bc of our close age gap. hindi siya pinagpala in relationships. everytime she enters one, nag-eend. but she has a 12-year old kid. my mom is financially struggling. since i'm working, i make sure to help her with her debts. kaso kasi medyo bulag sa lovelife, everytime may jowa siya, lagi siya nababaon uli sa utang sooo to the rescue uli ako. pero single na uli siya now & we moved out sa partner nya which im paying the rent now.
