Americans are stubborn about multigenerational housing

Honestly, I’m thinking hard about moving my husband and I in with my mom. She is widowed and lives alone in the house I grew up in. She struggles with money, but she makes it by. My husband and I bought our first house 5 years ago. We struggle with money but we make it by. It just seems crazy to all be struggling with money! If we combine into one house, everyone will be financially set! But the stigma is holding us back. My husband and I did what we were supposed to do. We got married, bought a house. It’s hard though! There’s no money left for travel or travel. If we didn’t feel like such failures moving back in with my mom, I think we would do it. Why are we so stubborn about this in America??

AIW for being annoyed that my in laws are moving into my neighborhood?

My husband and I have lived in the house that we bought together for 5 years. It’s a cute house and we love our neighborhood. My in laws live in a neighboring suburb. All of the sudden we get the news that my sister in law has bought a house in our neighborhood and is going to move their dad, step mom, and special needs brother in to live there. My sister in law doesn’t even live in the country anymore. So she’s buying the house with my father in law I guess? But no one told us this was happening until they’d already put in an offer. My in laws are now one street over from us. They could have picked anywhere to buy this house. They have no connections to our little suburb except for us. So why would they choose one street away from us? It feels like such an encroachment. We aren’t close to them. I don’t know if they’ll actually be invasive and show up unannounced or not. I don’t know if it will ever actually be an issue. Maybe they’ll mind their business. But I still hate it. They could have gone anywhere! It’s not like our neighborhood is especially nice or coveted. I just love it because we’ve made it our home. Now it feels slightly tainted. Am I wrong?
