Dead Bats, North Wales

Bit grim this apologies, looking for advice, after never seeing a dead bat my entire life in the last month I've seen 5, 3 have appeared in the last 2 days all in the same small patch of alleyway, its a little concerning so wanted to see if I should be doing anything else other than what I have so far or if I should do something different.

I've:

- Reached out to the bat conservation trust today and Im awaiting a reply.

- Submitted a request for a dead bat pack so they can be sent off for testing.

- Put the 2 most recently deceased bats in a plastic box in the shed so they dont get tampered with whilst awaiting the pack.

(Edit) Ive put the box in a cooler bag with ice

- Spoke to APHA, their vet said it could be poisoning but ultimately referred me back to the bat conservation trust.

Also, if they carry rabies could the local animals contract it from them, say if its a local Cat that's developed a hobby for killing bats?

Twist update

Posted yesterday about my twist fail, this is my first piece of anything outside of an un-finished rubbish set of tongs, went for a much simpler twist and it worked thanks for the advice, just need to make a pin, the one pictured is actually the half the broken first attempt.

Question, what's the red/brown colouration, it looks like oxidation but straight out the forge with 0 moisture?

Twist gone wrong

First go at a twist, got the piece up to yellow hot, cooled the ends I didnt want twisting, its 8mm round bar squared slightly so the twist showed more with some hot chiseled lines in for more pronunciation.

So errr before I have a meltdown what went wrong? Too hot? Too cold? Too many twists? Chisel lines too deep?

People on YouTube be twisting their pieces like theyre trying to squeeze the atoms out, I didnt count mine but here I maybe got three/four turns in before it snapped. Im very, very, very novice

Wales, spider on my neck

Don't mind spiders usually, but this modest sized fella was crawling on my neck as I was getting into bed after being in the shed five mins earlier, settle my mild nerves and tell me its a house spider or something and I dont have false widows that'll bite the kids in their sleep and draw them away to a lair or something.

Location Wales.

Welding potential wrought Iron

I've got a 1930's house with original fence and gate that needs repairing, I want to try and keep the original features if possible, neighbors say its wrought Iron but I'm not sure, spark test just confused me, might chuck some in the forge and see what happens, anyway:

  1. Other than slowing down for higher slag content any advice on technique so I dont fluff it up? (Wire type/gasless mig vs. Arc etc)

  2. Welding next to a footpath, dont want to half blind someone but I don't have a screen or anything, is it overkill or absolutely neccesary, could I just be vigilante and stop if I see someone coming etc, but then what if someone looks out a window? It's not possible due to location to completely screen in all directions

Forge door

Doing some forge upgrades, bagged a welder to make a door, ignore the absolutely shite welds its the first ever project, using an old TV wall mount to attach it to the forge.

Just need to do the same for the rear and weld on the burner pipes (they were kept on with a large nut but after a couple heat cycles worked their way loose and fell off mid forge prompting me to upgrade .. well everything, including lpg supply line, no more scary fire snake hose)

What wire is this?

Brand new, never welded outside of a couple hours community course, bought a cheapo Hitbox for practicing at home, only have outside space so needs to be arc or gasless mig, this is the wire that came with it .. the box has flux core ticked, but the spool has solid core ticked apparently according to Google lens, so errr .. halp?

*edit: is the spool mislabelled or is it the wrong spool for the box? Could someone with more experience know this from looking at the pictures? I will add it bends easy and doesn't snap

[Request] would a clown fish live long enough to swim the Pacific?

Ignoring the millions of ways a Clown Fish and a Regal Blue Tang could expire on a journey from the Barrier Reef to California, is it biologically possible for them to live long enough to make the journey? (Watching finding Dory with lots of kids and the wife and I are full of questions and too lazy to math/google)

Correct over hammering?

First attempt at blacksmithing, making tongs out of flat bar (some scrap I had left over from from an old 1930's fence) got a bit over zealous with the cross pein when drawing out the reigns, advice on how to get these craters out?

UK - 0-30psi regulator

Struggling to find a 0-30 psi regulator with a gauge anywhere online in the UK that has a POL connection? I currently have a 0.5-4 bar regulator with a gauge but I'd really like to be able to start the forge lower/be able to fine tune, I've been googling for an hour now and can't find one outside of US Amazon. What're you guys all using? Am I typing the wrong thing or something, closest ive got is a BBQ regulator which would need a POL adapter which just means more risk of leaks in my head

Advice re: flashback arrestors

My current propane forge setup is: Propane tank > High pressure regulator > ball valve > split line to two pre made venturi burners (see pic)

I've just read about flashback arrestors and when I try to research more there's conflicting advice, varying from everything will blow up and kill me if I dont have one to its not necessary because I dont use bottled oxygen. Do I panic and slot one into the chain or ignore?

What to do with mystery thingy

Found for nothing in a mystery box at a carboot, seller didnt know anything about it, unkown steel, I'm a newbie on a budget, I thought it might make a hardy tool of some description like a bending fork?

Re-purpose post hammer as a flatter?

This is for sale near me fairly cheap, its advertised as a "cast post hammer."

It doesn't state if it's cast iron or steel, but I presume cast iron for driving in posts would be a poor choice?

Very new to the hobby, and steel is hard to come by me reasonably priced, especially stock large enough to make hammers, I was wondering if one end could be narrowed for a striking side either by forging or if its not possible because it's cast welding something to it, and the other re-dressed to make sure its flat

Absolute beginner, not even completed my forge yet, considering this anvil, its a decent size and faily cheap for my area, but unknown make/weight/or composition and it has this worrying (to my inexperienced eye) crack near the heel ... yay or nay?
